Groan of the day: When did the bedbugs get married? In the spring.
Well I have been posting music charts every week for a long time. But something tells me not many ppl are all that interested. I mean, what do the charts mean? Who decides what is where? And why should the charts be important or exciting? Allow me to answer those questions.
There are two types of charts that I post. I post one album sales charts, and many radio airplay charts. To make the album charts, all the CDs sold in the last week are added up. They are then ranked on a chart from most sold to least sold. Similarly, the radio airplay charts are made by adding the number of plays a song got in the last week on a certain type (format) and ranking the songs from most played to least played.
Why have charts?: Well consider this. If I told you a CD sold 1000 copies last week, you really wouldn't know what that meant unless you knew what all the other CDs of its type had sold the same week. A chart allows us to compare music song next to song, album next to album, to determine who is the most popular and successful.
Well who cares?: The charts are actually very important. If a album or song does bad in relation to others (charts badly) the band will lose label support. Their next CD and singles wont be marketed or advertised as much, they will have to play at smaller venues. An example of this is when the band P.O.D. went from selling 3.2 million of their 2001 CD to selling 300,000 of their 2006 CD. After that, they lost so much label support they were forced to leave their label and find a new one.
But other than root for our favorite bands what can we do to change the charts?: It is amazing what one person can do. Last week a song was #1 by a single play. Anyone of you could have requested the song and made it #1. Every time you request a song on your local radio station it helps that song a lot, because they play songs that get requested more than songs that don't. As for album charts, buying the CD the first week it comes out is the best way to help your band.
