CD Review Barlowgirl: How Can We Be Silent B-
Genre: Rock/Pop
Songs: 10
The Barlow balloon has popped. Only a few years ago the three homeschooled girl’s hard rock hooks mixed with beautiful harmony’s, took Christian radio by storm and even threatened to crossover into the mainstream in the wake of their secular counterpart’s mega stardom. But then “How Can We Be Silent” hit shelves and literally thousands of fans gave up on their band.
The CD’s opener is strong, though far from original. From there it dips into a 5min balled that is touching and heart-felt, but appeals more to the homeschool mom than the old Barlowgirl fan base. The momentous failure of the CDs first single-“Here’s My Life” may have failed for this same reason.
The hard guitars are still in Barlowgirl’s sound, but they only approach anything like intense in perhaps two songs. The vocal exercises and harmony’s are as good as ever, but sound very familiar. The result is this CD sounds like a watered down version of the old Barlowgirl, musically anyway. Lyrically-- troubled, emotional, evangelical, teenage girls will find the words written with them in mind.
They used to be watered down Evanescence, but now they have their own sound—which is evidently still working out the kinks.
