Groan of the day: Hotel Guest: Please call me a taxi Bell Boy: Yes sir, you’re a taxi!
Yes, today I have a tag, a review, and the charts. Music news was cut today b/c of all the Grammy talk I did yesterday. But before this post gets started, a few things I must say:
Monday I make the big announcement I’ve teased you about in the past (The one about what happens in January).
Saturday The Homeschool Blog Awards End. I have gotten everyone I can to vote for me, but it doesn’t look like that’ll be quite enough. My fine opponent has many friends in high places that have endorsed him on their blogs. Last year many of you were good enough to post on your blog telling others to vote, and that’s what I’m asking you to do. Just a few lines and a link would thrill me and make me want to give you a big hug. And if you don’t…I’ll just like pretend I didn’t ask you too ;)

EP Review Jon Foreman: Fall A
Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Songs: 6
When someone says Jon Foreman I think Switchfoot, an alternative band that has peaked yet keeps getting better. And when people say singer/songwriter I get scary images of Bethany Dillon and Bebo Norman in my head. Surprisingly, Jon leaves both the rock of Switchfoot and the tired clichés of singer/songwriter behind in his first solo release.
The EP itself is an image, one captured well in the cover art drawn by Jon. A dead, leafless, tree at sunrise. The music is laid back, moody, with plenty of folk rhythms and sounds. This serves to match a voice that, though it couldn’t win American Idol, has a down-home feel that makes you think of a kind bum on the side of the road with a guitar. The music feels unpolished and organic, in an ear pleasing way.
But it is the lyrics that drive the EP home. “A Cure For Pain” sets the theme with it’s moody, musing, hope tinged words: “I’ve spent ten years trying to sing these tears away…and heaven knows I try to find a cure for the pain. Oh my Lord, to suffer like you do, it would be a lie to run away.”
From talking against economics, to comparing his wife’s features to the passing outside scenery on a train ride, all the words are straight from the heart. And some will be happy to hear that Jon is much more spiritual in his lyrics than he has left himself be in Switchfoot for several years.
Check my last post for a way to get “A Cure For Pain” for free. Go to JonForman.com to buy the EP for $5.
