I'm an Unschooling mom in Las Vegas, NV. I have all boys! A 14 yr old, a 6 yr old, a 1 yr old and 2 teenage stepsons.
4 of the 5 have some special need or another, and the 5th would be termed "gifted" if he was in school. They all have their own interests and abilities.
Join me as I blog about our Christ-led learning approach..things that work, things that don't, and the antics of family life!
You may ask, "Who are you?" I'll tell you! I'm Elissa Wahl. I'm an open book.
I lived in the same small town in NJ for 26 years. I was lucky enough to grow up with 2 parents who were both teachers. And, teachers who loved learning and educating! This translated over to my childhood. We primarily played out of doors, lots of imaginative play. We had lots of "toys", like base ten blocks, and geoboards, weights/scales, chalkboards, board games and of course, loads of books.
I had my first son, Brian, at 20. I heard about homeschooling when I was pregnant with him. As he grew, I knew I was meeting his needs and I so enjoyed watching his brain spin and grasp things...by the time he was 2 I knew we would homeschool!
I love being hands on, I love traveling, I love watching them love things!
By the time Brian was 3 I knew I had a very smart child on my hands (not being prejudiced...he's just very advanced and able to pick things up quickly!) I also knew his interests mattered more than my plans.
When Brian was 6 we moved to Las Vegas and I married his stepdad. He had 2 children of his own, Christopher and Forrest. It was like having triplets! They were all 6 mo apart! ACHHH!!! A year later we had our own addition, Elias.
Las Vegas is sure different than the East Coast, but we found a good circle of friends and great churches.
Now, there is yet another addition, Sebastian! All boys!!
I have been active in the homeschool community for so long and in so many different ways...lets see:
*Hosted for AOL in the Homeschool Chatroom for years
*Co-Authored "Christian Unschooling; Growing Your Children in the Freedom of Christ"
*Edited and Published an online ezine, Seedlings
*Formed a local support group in the NW area of Las Vegas

Well...that's mostly me! Lots of boys, lots of activity, lots of advocating..oh, and when I have a spare second, I love to scrapbook!
