Lord, Please Meet Me in the Laundry Room by Barbara Curtis
This book is subtitled "Heavenly Help for Earthly Moms" and Ms. Curtis does a wonderful job of making us aware of the fact that God is there for us whenever we need him. Although we should strive for some daily quiet time with our Lord, many of us busy moms (including myself!) let all of life’s busy-ness get in the way … instead of making this quiet time a priority, it is often the first thing to go when our schedules get too full. This book reminds us that God is there for us 24/7 and all we have to do is reach out to Him and invite him in.
This is not a book written by a "perfect Christian." Yes, Ms. Curtis is a practicing Christian now, but she had many difficult experiences in childhood and early adulthood as a non-Christian. She did not always know of her Father’s love for her. It wasn’t until she was married with several children that she was born again. She eventually went on to become the mother of 12 children and so we can imagine that trying to find a quiet time with the Lord is almost an impossible task in her home! I only have two children, but the busy-ness of homemaking, homeschooling, and working from home often mean that I push aside my quiet time. After reading this book, I no longer feel that I have an excuse for NOT making daily time to talk with my heavenly father.
Lord, Please Meet Me in the Laundry Room is an encouraging and inspirational book for us stay-at-home moms. She believes strongly in the calling of motherhood and, while not speaking "against" working mothers, she champions the stay-at-home parent and encourages her to consider herself more than "just a mommy." She also writes about homeschooling, adoption and parenting children with special needs (she has four children with Down’s syndrome). Ms. Curtis’ childhood life was characterized by abandonment, foster care, physical abuse and alcoholism. Her adult life before becoming a Christian wasn’t much better as she experienced divorce, alcoholism, and a shotgun wedding. However, she uses these experiences to show us that our lives do not have to be perfect for us to let God into them! We need Him at all times and He’s there for us when we call out.
I felt refreshed after reading this book. I am the first to admit that my spiritual life is a bit dry at the moment. I am a "scheduler" and if it isn’t on the daily schedule, it doesn’t get done – LOL! Although my daily schedule is full, Ms. Curtis has reminded me that I am NOT too busy to make time for God. Nothing should keep me from a time of prayer and thanksgiving each day. Putting God FIRST before everything else will actually help my life run smoother. I have experienced this before and am not sure why I fall "off the wagon" when it comes to finding time for God in my day. If you find your spiritual life a bit dry, pick up a copy of Lord, Please Meet Me in the Laundry Room – I do believe you’ll find yourself renewed and inspired to make daily time for the Lord.
