Dirty Dancing at the Prom (and Other Challenges Christian Teens Face) by Barbara Curtis
As the parent of a daughter who will enter her teen years in six short months, I'm always on the lookout for books that will help me parent teenagers. Things have changed in the 20 years since I graduated from high school and teens today are totally bombarded with so many temptations that I didn't have to deal with. Dirty Dancing is a wonderful guide giving parents a 'road map' of help in dealing with everything from the media's influence on teens to how teens' apparel can send mix signals. Ms. Curtis has intereviewed Christian teens about their lives and these children share honestly what it's like to be a teen in the 21st century.
This book wants to equip you, the parent, with the ability to aid your Christian teens to continue to maintain their values and morals system that you have worked so hard to lay the groundwork for during their younger years. The chapters cover such topics as setting limits for the children, helping them avoid temptation and how to make the most of mistakes. The author is very honest about her life experiences as a teen and then the parent of teens. She is not perfect and doesn't pretend to be ... while reading this book, I felt like I was talking to an old friend. I believe the biggest lesson to be learned from this book is our teens DO want us to be involved in their lives. They aren't ready for us to just turn them over to society. They need and want guidance - Dirty Dancing at the Prom should be on every parent's reading list. Although it comes from a Christian viewpoint, the information is timeless and relevant to ALL families!
