Special Presentation The Crusades: Crescent and the
Cross, (2 Parts)
Sunday, November 6th at 9PM/8c and Monday, November
7th

For thousands of years, the holy lands of the Middle
East have been the focus of intense conflict between
three of the great religions of the world –
Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. One of the deepest
scars in the history of these territories was created
in the medieval wars between Christians and Muslims
known as the Crusades. At stake was Jerusalem, sacred
to all three religions, and the control over the
broader region surrounding it. Through viewing the
Crescent and the Cross, students will build their
knowledge of this era in global history and will
discover the complex interweaving of politics,
ethnicity, and religion that both enriches and plagues
world events today.

The Crusades: Crescent & The Cross details the
history of the first three crusades, military
invasions by western Christians attempting to conquer
Jerusalem and the Holy Lands that were ruled by
Muslims. First initiated by Pope Urban II in 1095, the
crusades were carried out by zealous kings, warriors,
knights, men, women and children. Their motives ranged
from the saintly to the greedy, and often fell
somewhere in between. Their personal stories of
leadership, triumph, heroics and demise are
chronologically detailed, revealing an accurate and
captivating portrayal through the use of contemporary
primary sources written by Christian “Franks” (as
western Europeans were called) and by Islamic scholars
as well. The documentary includes interviews of an
international array of acclaimed experts, maps of
cities, trips to ancient battlefields and castles, and
breath-taking re-enactments.

On the Front Lines: Citizen Soldiers
Thursday, November 10th at 10PM/9c

Once referred to as “weekend warriors,” National Guard
and Army Reserve units have often been considered
supplementary forces available when needed to support
the main branches of the military. Today, however,
nearly 35% of the United States troops in Iraq are
members of Reserve and Guard units, proving that these
forces have become indispensable to the American
military. This hour-long documentary on the National
Guard and the Army Reserve highlights the personal
stories of the men and women serving in these units
today. Interwoven with these stories, Citizen Soldiers
traces the history of National Guard and Army Reserves
from their origins through the contemporary era.
Many will be surprised to learn that the National
Guard began all the way back in 1636 when the
Massachusetts Bay Colony formed a militia to repel the
threat of the Pequot tribes. Guard units have been
usually used at the discretion of the states, a
modern-day version of state militias. But soon it
became possible for them to be federalized during
times of war or national emergency. At the beginning
of the 20th century, the Guard was double the size of
the standing U.S. Army, dipping during the era of the
World War II draft before climbing back up to its
current levels. The Army Reserve, on the other hand
began in 1908 as a way to keep medical officers in the
service so they could be called up in war time. In the
current Army, these units are primarily made up of
former active-duty personnel, many of them with
specialized skills the Army prizes. Students will
learn from this documentary how inheritors of this
history are serving throughout the world, as we travel
with some of them, see up-close what their jobs are,
and compare their stories with those from the past.

Discussion Questions:
1. What are the major differences between the roles
played by the National Guard and the Army Reserves?
What are their key functions?
2. Which of the stories in this documentary did you
find most interesting or thought-provoking? Why?
