Ok, I haven't had time to answer the Field Trip question yet, but I thought I'd create a mini online field trip. You must see these pictures - they are INCREDIBLE and will inspire the budding artist in your home, I'm sure!
Here's one picture from a Chinese Watermelon Carving Contest. Do you see how they've carved INTO the various layers of the watermelon? I just think the skill shown here is awesome - the rest of the pictures can be seen here:
