In addition to using the Basic Cozy Grammar Course, I will also be teaching my children how to diagram sentences to reinforce what they are learning. I learned how to diagram when I was in school and have found it very useful in decoding complex sentences. I want my children to have the same knowledge! Rod & Staff teaches diagramming in their grammar course, but since I've decided NOT to continue with that series, I needed another source. My 6th grader already knows the basics of diagramming and is ready for more complicated material. I've held off teaching diagramming to my 4th grader until I was sure he had a really good grasp of basic grammar. Last year, he had his "lightbulb" moment and I know he's ready to learn this new concept now!

The product that I will be using is Mary Daly's First Whole Book of Diagrams. I ordered it directly from her website along with the Worktext. Now, after receiving both, I think you could effectly teach beginning diagramming using the Worktext alone. However, the Whole Book will give me LOTS more examples to use, especially when my kids get stuck on diagramming a certain concept (and the author knocks $5 off the price of the Worktext if you order it along with the Whole Book!). The Whole Book also covers A LOT more material than the WorkText. What I will probably do is start my son in the Worktext and my daughter in the Whole Book because they are at different ability levels. I am glad that I purchased BOTH books - well worth the money!
In the Worktext, Ms. Daly begins by teaching diagramming a 2-word "noun-verb" sentence. Then she teaches about articles and adjectives. These chapters are followed by direct objects, linking verbs, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. The answer key is in the back of the Worktext. In the Whole Book, topics covered are subject & verb, articles, adjectives, direct object, subject complement, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliary verbs, imperative, subordinate clauses, verbal forms, intransitives, NVNN, and Prose & Verse. Do you see now why I think the Whole Book is needed? It just covers a lot more material!
If you are looking for a separate course for diagramming, then this is it! The order page is here and you can pay using PayPal. The author will answer your questions before your order, so feel free to email her before ordering, if necessary!
