I received two boxes of books today from Book CloseOuts - gosh, I love that store! I am soooooo thrilled with several of my purchases and I thought I'd share them here. I'll review each item separately to make it easier to find something you may be looking for.
We will be working on learning the writing process using the program in Tapestry of Grace, but I also wanted the kids to work on their creative writing. I've looked at several programs and just thought they seemed too "formal." I found the Journal Jumpstarts at Book Closeouts (see them here) and bought one of each. I've decided that I'm going to purchase ANOTHER set so that each child has one set for their very own.
In each workbook are 29 "jumpstarts" with general and seasonal topics. The child can do his writing directly in the book or you can tear out the perforated pages if desired and file them away in a notebook. You ARE given the right to reproduce the pages for classroom or home use and I know that I could do this, but I've decided that I just want the kids to be able to keep everything in the book. There are 9 books for months September - May. I think that I'll probably have the kids do a journal entry 2-3 times weekly. This will mean that these books will last for MORE than one year in my homeschool.
Let's look at a couple of samples. In the September book, the first jumpstart is "The 10 best things about me are ...." and the 2nd jumpstart is "My 3 most important goals for this school year are ...." Other entries ask the child to write about a person they want to meet and why they want to meet them, or has them writing a song or poem to be used as an anthem for school or community. Another entry has the child writing about the changes that fall brings ... what does the child see, hear, smell, etc. in September? Each entry has a picture that the child can color and the pages are lined.
The March Journal Jumpstart has entries about St. Patricks' Day, what would it be like to live on Mars (March is named for the Roman god Mars), what the child would think it was like to live like a bird, etc. Each entry is really fun! I think that I might even write alongside the children and let them learn a little more about me in the process ... what fun it will be for us to write about ourselves and share those thoughts with each other!
These workbooks sell for $2.49 each (50% off of the retail price) at Book CloseOuts. There are coupons in the right sidebar for you to possibly use, too! I definitely think these were a good purchase!

That sounds very much like what my 7th and 8thgrade teachers did every day.
They wrote on the board a subject that we then had to spend time writing about. I believe the goal was to write a page.
I still have those notebooks. (You wrote in the same notebook every day. Periodically you turned it in for the teacher to look through) Though, going back adn reading them -- I was a bit simple in my writing.

that sounds like fun. I like to write out 5 journal prompts for each boy (well not Ki, he's not writing yet, he just does copywork still). They can choose to do wichever they want each day, as long as they all get done during the week. I include the list in their weekly schedule. It'd be nice to have a book that had it all done for me, but at the same time, I love being able to write journal prompts that are a part of their lives and their interests, they are much more excited to write about their favorite topics.
Oh, I am trying to find classical homeschoolers to leave the following comment at: (you included):
would you be interested in attending (online) a chat about Classical Education Methods??? I need a few people who are knowledgeable on the subject to join the chat. (it would probably be on a Monday)
