My Kids Meal Rant

(if I had to choose a kids' meal, this is the one I'd choose!)

Here is my first ever blogging rant.  I almost feel guilty writing it!  For those of you who order kids meals for your children, please don't be upset.  I'm not judging you  at all!

Here goes.  What is the big deal if I.....gasp....order my six- , five- , and four-year olds adult meals?  We usually split adult meals for our kids rather than order off the children's menu at most restaurants.  It seems that (usually) the only things available to children are hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, hamburgers, and chicken nuggets.  The cost of these meals is occasionally very close to that of a regular dish of say, grilled chicken with vegetables and potatoes.  My children love salad and soup.  They eat just about anything, in fact!  But for some reason I get a lecture from the people we're dining with about letting them be children.  UGH!   Can't they be children and eat grilled chicken?

I know I'm a weirdo already.  I homeschool.  I bake my own bread.  We rarely eat convenience foods.  We wear hand-me-downs.  And, yes, I order adult meals for my children!  Lol!  I am not a food snob and I don't look down on people who send their kids to school, eat Ring Dings, shop at the Gap (I do too sometimes!), or order hot dogs with Oreos at Chilis.  I promise!

Sigh.

That's all I have to say & now I feel better.  Rant over.

my oldest likes the 'adult food' better, but the othgers are picky, too picky, and an 'adult meal' would be wasted. We usually swing through B.K. drive through and get a couple $1.20 chicken tender 5-packs and then head off to the restauraunt, LOL. it saves money and saves food waste. Maybe it's spoiling the younger two? I dunno. But it seems a waste to order 'real restauraunt' food for them.

Hubby and I often split meals at restaraunts. Those portions are outrageous.

and fast food kid meals are a waste, too.

I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to say that I agree with you. We usually order adult meals for our boys to split, for the same reasons as you. But for another reason too.... even at 8, 6, and 4 yr olds, our oldest 3 eat a lot and kid's meals usually leave them asking for more.

I feel the same way! It also bugs me that it BUGS other people what *I* feed my children? What's it to them? THe thing is, my children happen to be the healthiest children I know and I bet it has a little something to do with the fact that they DON'T eat French Fries and grilled cheese all the time! Why does it BOTHER people that my children actually LIKE vegetables and actually DON'T like dessert? Does it make them feel guilty? Do they think I mean parent, depriving my children of a necessity? The truth is, I frequently offer my children a "treat" and I NEVER tell them they may not have a sweet or a junk food at another family's home when it is served, but more often than not, they don't WANT to eat it. It's THEIR choice! Hmph. Sorry, I ranted on YOUR blog. I'll go to my own now.

Feb. 20, 2006 - I TOTALLY agree

My husband and I have, since before children always looked at dining out as "family style." We order 2 things that we both want to try and we share. Now that we have 2 little boys (5 and 15mos) they join the meal. We always just ask for 2 extra plates. If we know that it will not be enough we get a 3rd item. I have not had a problem with anyone questioning me. And I have often said to the waiter that it is a shame that they do not have more healthy items for the kids. Maybe one day it will get through to them.
