Northanger Abbey
Northanger Abbey has recently become one of my favourite titles. I have long loved Jane Austens work but (For some mysteriously vexing reason) I have only just come upon Northanger Abbey. I immediately fell in love with the characters of Catherine Morland and Mr.Henry Tilney. They are such a refreshing breeze from the many time repeatedly read Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Oh, and Persuasion. I have already read through Northanger Abbey twice and will rave about the movie to anyone who asks. If you have not read Northanger Abbey yet then please do not read on.
I immediately picked out Isabella and her brother John Thorpe as evil, conniving characters. The way Isabella would always call Catherine
'My dearest creature!'
She made Catherine sound like a little puppy dog. Catherine, blind sighted to the evils of the world had no idea that Isabella, her true friend in Catherine's eyes, was only out to secure Catherine's brother James for his money, and then when Captain Tilney came along she stooped to such malicious levels to try and marry Cap Tilney for his vastly greater inheritance when Isabella herself was already engaged to James! But Cap Tilney just used her... no more than she deserved i dare say. As for John Thorpe, the horrible pug faced man tried to marry Catherine for the money that he thought she was to inherit from Mr.Allen. Personally it was hard for me to read a character who absolutely loved Bath, especially after reading Persuasion where Anne, it's heroine, finds it so unpleasant.
All in all, Northanger Abbey is the greatest Jane Austen that i have ever read.
I got the audio of Northanger Abbey from Librivox, a free website.
