Notes from the Laundry Pile

Mar. 21, 2007 - Wow. 101 Entries.
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I can't believe I've typed enough to come up with 101 entries!! For some reason, it sounds like more than it looks.

I know I started blogging on a whim. I think it was because Thoughtful Mom had such an interesting looking blog. I started on Yahoo!360 - and keep a blog there for family & a few friends that are there.

I also figured out something. I figured out that the reason I haven't completely switched from HSB to blogger is because I'm addicted to comments. That really sounds funny.. and looks funny, too. Is there a 12-step program?

I have to laugh -- both babies are fussing and J needs a diaper change (he will be potty trained as soon as it's warm enough - our babies are streakers when they potty train.) --  It's my 101st entry and this is all I can blog about??

Mar. 21, 2007 - Spring Reading Thing
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I've been working and thinking of my book reading list - every since I saw that it was coming up on CoffeeMom's blog. Now let's see if I can get this reading done. I've not been very good about finishing things lately - great at starting - terrible about finishing.

Without further ado, my list is as follows:
When Your Child is 6 to 12 by John M. Drescher
Your Girl by Vicki Courtney
Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets
Optional:
ReOrdering your Day by Chuck Pierce
Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer (this will be a re-read)

So there you go.
The books I desire to read.

Mar. 15, 2007 - Count me in!
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Okay!! I have a stack of books that I can see the bookmarks sticking out from the pages. It's time to read them. :-)

I have time to narrow down the list because I need to be realistic. *L* Though, I'm even considering adding my scheduling to this "Thing".

So - I'm in. Care to join me?

Mar. 11, 2007 - *Insert witty title here*
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Howdy! from the Laundry Pile.

I'm still here - I'm still homeschooling and - occasionally, I even compute!! *LOL* And then there are those moments of "does not compute".

I just told myself a joke.

I've been reading blogs. Promise. I've been trying to keep up - but when I have the briefest of moments to comment on my friends' blogs - I can't log in. Several things happen. I either time out - which bums me beyond the norm because I have cable internet and ... well.. I have expectations, by golly! The other thing that happens is it just takes to long to load and I never get to the "Post comment."

So I'm not ignoring you - Promise. I've even thought about posting comments in my blog entry here - but does that go against "etiquette"? What is blog etiquette anyway? Would that be "Bletiquette"? or maybe "Blogiquette"?

Okay here go my updates of sorts:

Laundry Pile conditions: Wrinkled. -- We've been cracking the books and trying to get seasons and months memorized on top of that.  :-)  It seems that the names of the months & days of the week are very abstract things for my 6yo G to assimilate into his brain. I asked him what the first day of the week was and he said "January". At least he got the first part right....

Mini-Me is tackling "borrowing" in her subtraction problems and it's quite interesting to see how her brain works on the problems. We're also tackling an attitude. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm just being too sensitive - because I'm not figuring out how to train her in how to go in the other direction. I'm praying - but probably not nearly enough.

J is, well, almost 3. He had a week and a half of a nasty ear infection and we watched way too much TV and now we're trying to break the habit. :-)

Laundry Pile fun:  I practiced face painting this weekend. And it was fun. I can manage to get a good looking design on myself -- but I'm really trying to figure out good patterns for boys. Most of the patterns you see on the internet are for girls. Unless you want Superman's big yellow "S". There are only so much of those I want to paint. I'll see about posting pictures. (gotta get 'em off the camera first)

Comfy's personal stuff: I've been writing. On paper. With a pen. It's a weird sensation. *L* I'd almost forgotten what it felt like. Granted - the dishes suffered, the laundry suffered - but it still felt good. Now if I can figure out how to get my plot from point a to point b, I'll be happy. But I've got lots of time...I've been writing since I was 12. *L* I'm in no hurry now.

Laundry Pile Blog issues: I've been frustrated with *here* that I've considered a move.  I've got some pictures up and it's beginning to look like home... but I'm not sure I'm ready to officially move in, YET. Come in and take a look and tell me what you think?

Comfy's new Digs

And that's it from the Laundry Pile for now. I'm cutting it short because I want Rocky Road Ice Cream and The Professor wants to play "EverQuest".

By the way? Life is still good.

Feb. 21, 2007 - You know you're a homeschool mom when ...

A Quick Note from the Laundry Pile

I had to share my "You know....when" moment.

You know you're a homeschool mom when ----

Your son passes his completed assignment to you under the bathroom door.

And, no, I hadn't locked myself in.

I was in there for the briefest of necessary moments.

Feb. 16, 2007 - A Homeschool moment...
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Today - I'm loving life.

Today I'm loving schoolwork.

Today - I've had caffeine.

*Insert gales of laughter here*

We had a true homeschool moment today. We did some school work and had lunch before I had to go to the chiropractor. (we're working out a kink in my back) After the chiro's visit, I decided I wanted a Diet Coke.

From Sonic.

A large one.

So off we went. Next to our Sonic they are building  a new building. I've been taking any chance I can to point out the orderliness of things --  (thanks to our current KONOS unit). (It also helps that my hubby is a structural engineer so there's a few more steps I could point out to the kids.) -- so when we first arrived at the Diet coke store, I pointed out that they had placed the rebar for the concrete footings. It was also fun to tell them that Daddy (The Professor) has to check for the rebar in buildings when he goes for inspections.

As we left, the back-hoe was right by the street - picking up slabs of sidewalk. It was too cool! So we paused (in the driveway) to watch him pick up a slab, swing the giant arm around and drop the slab on the ground to break it. (It will be easier to pick up and put into the dumptruck later).

Mini-Me pointed out that there was a gap in the traffic - and I realized I needed to get out of the driveway. So we drove around the Diet Coke Store and parked. We got out to watch as the back-hoe picked up the side walk, slab by slab. My dad can pick up a quarter off the ground with a fork lift - so there's not much these guys can't do. It was just fun to watch.

As we stood there, he turned the arm around and used the giant claw ("It's like a giant arm!" Said G) and waved at us! G was so terribly Thrilled!!

I finally got cold (it's 35 degrees out there) and decided to come home. He was still pumped when we got home. "I really liked hearing all the noisey machines!"

There was a day last week when I was ready to ship them all off to public school - so that I could blame the school system for whatever happened. You know, instead of me. (I'm better now)

Today was one of those moments of homeschooling - that, if the kids had been at school, we would have missed that giant hand waving at us.

It was just fun.

And unforgettable.

And I just learned from the Bobcat website - that this creature that waved at us was actually a backhoe excavator. It was still giant (much bigger than the ones BobCat sells) and yellow.

Today - I like Homeschooling. Oh - yeah - we're off to buy a globe...

Feb. 12, 2007 - We have a serious side, too...
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I haven't had much of a chance to log on lately. It's amazing how life can be. One week - you're searching high and low to find something to blog about - and the next week, you haven't got the time anyway.

I wanted to take a moment and share. I had to share with you that we do have a serious side here in the Laundry Pile. I"m pretty sanguine and my kids bounce from thing to thing - The Professor keeps more focus than we do - but it's his nature and not ours. Though, we don't hold it against him.

So - we're serious about: Jesus, no hitting or spitting or biting, I'm pretty serious about what we watch on TV - and then we're serious about our gaming.

Yes - I said Gaming. And I'm not talking board games.

My hubby and I were both raised with game systems and computers. So the kids are having that passed down to them. It's rather interesting really. They ask The Professor to help them beat hard levels in "Ratchet & Clank". Mini-Me is pretty good at "Sly Cooper".

For Christmas my brother got the kids "Legos: Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy". It was an immediate hit. The company that made it upped the level of humor and fun and added a few challenges. So the kids play through the levels - and The Professor comes along behind them at night and cleans up the left overs. It's an interesting system - and I'm not sure the kids realize what's going on.

One day, I walked into the front room and found this:

That's all three of the big kids -- The green box is full of J's toy people that he put down so he could watch to.

See? Serious gamers...

The point really hit home as to how serious we were last week. I bought, some time ago, a game called "Bejeweled 2". The Professor is better at it than I am because there is some level of logic to the game. I'm better at the luck side of it. One night last week ( I think it was Monday) , I had a great "Session" on this silly game (it's quite addictive). I even beat his top score, which surprised me quite a bit. I did not gloat - though part of me did want to dance around the house.  I eventually came to a stand still and lost. It was bed time, anyway.

Friday night, I came back from rehearsing with our praise & worship group (singing) to find my hubby playing the game. He was having some luck - but lost while I was watching. He started up another game and I went to bed because I had an early morning for the women's ministry event that was happening on Saturday. The next morning, the Professor made sure I was awake so I could leave the house on time. (He had been taking care of the kids)

Did you have a good time on the game? I asked. Trying to eek out a few more minutes in bed.

Yes. He replied

Did you beat my high score? I wondered.

Yes. He replied

By how much? I queried (Secretly tickled at him)

Oh, a little bit. I'm not sure. He was sidestepping the question. He's a serious gamer, remember? He would know by how much he beat my score.

What time did you go to bed? I asked suspicious as to his behaviour.

2am.

Not only did he beat my high score - He BEAT my high score into dust...

Yep. I'm plotting my revenge.

Because we're serious gamers....

Editor's Note: I should explain that it was not the Professor's intent to stay up until 2am. It was, however, his intent to beat my score - and the game was going so well that it just happened that he stayed up that the next thing he knew - it was 2 in the morning. :-) I've never done that *She said sheepishly*

Jan. 30, 2007 - Have nothing to say?
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Have you ever wanted to blog - but just felt you had nothing to say? That's the way I feel right now. I want so much to type - but I think in my current frame of mind I'd end up writing a journal entry and that just wouldn't be much fun to read.  So maybe I could just type up some notes...

Schooling Notes:

We're going to start studying the seasons following a plan laid out in KONOS. our Season tree is hanging on the wall - half finished. It's a mutant of a poster tree - I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow. The paper is good quality bulletin board paper and it's NOISY.  The kids were excited about seeing it go up - so I know they'll be excited to decorate it. I know KONOS said to get some sticks - but I know J-man would knock it down. And my house just really isn't suited for a bunch of sticks on my table.

I need to get on the ball and request some books from the library...but I'm a bit behind. The baby wasn't feeling well tonight and The Professor was working late.

I'm going to attempt a more focused approach to the school. I'm just not sure where to go from where I am now - but it's a step by step process. I was homeschooled - but my mom never went through some of what I'm going through now. I was old enough to do most of my own school work by myself. Except for Algebra (but we won't go there). So I sat down and figured out where I was as far as a schedule and where I wanted to go.

Now I just need to figure out what we're doing on what days - as far as our unit studies go. I'm still sticking with ABeka stuff for Phonics and math because I haven't found anything I like better (yet)

There's a lovely young lady associated with our church (her mom attends) who is a missionary to Jinja, Uganda, Africa. The Lord laid it on my heart to have the kids pray for her. So we're going to get her picture and I'll get out my map of Africa and we'll do some extra study on Africa and her locale, etc. So I really need to get a plan laid out. I tried last night - but was too tired to think straight.

God said it was a year of shifting in our house - it's really beginning to shift. It's rather cool to watch - especially when I see a shift in me.

Family Notes:

Mini-E was up in the middle of the night last night with a cough and bit of a wheeze. So I took her to the doctor today. I rather figured that the Doctor wouldn't find anything - but that he'd be able to tell me how I could medicate my baby. Which is a good thing I went - he diagnosed her with bronchitis and said that what I had on hand for a cough was not suitable for her age. Whew.  So now we have some meds, instructions and the power of prayer (which is what we had before - but now we're praying specifically)

Everyone else is fine and comfy.

Animal Notes:

Our cat, Maggie, has a balding hind-foot. She has a minor sore there - but really we don't think it was what caused her foot to go bald but we just can't be sure. So our vet gave us some anti-biotics for the cat (just in case). I've never had to give an animal a pill before. Well - except a dog and dogs will eat anything. (Had a dog once that ate the insulation out of our house.)

I have to say - giving this cat a pill is so much easier than giving my older kids medicines. I don't have to bribe Maggie the Cat with chocolate, or money (yes, I've offered to pay my kids when the medicine is just nasty). And I don't have to pour water into a cup for her like I do the kids. They take their medicine with a cup of water in hand - and prefer a chocolate to get rid of the taste.

Nope. WIth Maggie, I wrap her up in a towel (Or my denim jacket) - pry her mouth open and stick the pill in. I wish that worked with my kids.

Friendly Notes:

I haven't had time to visit my blog-friends like I want to. I'm reading most of their blogs - but don't have time to comment on them. So, if you're still reading my notes, just know that I'm keeping up with you - I've just not been able to let you know it.  gosh - that sounded cryptic and stalkerish. Sorry.

I may have to edit that one.

Jan. 18, 2007 - Comfy Weirdness
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I've been tagged.

It's rather strange typing that as I was never good at tag. Now playing "Spud" with a Koosh - I was good at that. The game juggled its way over from "Juggling Paynes'"homefront.

THE RULES: Each player of this game starts with the ‘7 weird things about you.’ So - Wanna play?

This is kind of funny - I'm considered weird - but only by those that love and know me really well. I'm not sure what the rest of the world would consider weird. Maybe they consider me weird, too, they just don't know and love me well enough to tell me so. Maybe I should ask my brother - he's always telling me I'm weird. Here's his chance to tell me why.

How does one qualify one's own weirdness? My brother came up with quirks. Do those count?? I don't think so - they fall more into the pet peeve category...

1) I learned how to talk, primarily, in Tennessee. Memphis to be exact. Maybe it was because that's where I learned to read phonetically. Anyway - when I get around someone with a strong southern accent - or sometimes even an English accent - I revert back. I spent a weekend at a Beth Moore conference and with 2 people with strong accents. It took me DAYS to get back to "Normal".

2) I like puns. Really. But they have to be good puns. bad puns are just groaners.

3) I like cartoons. I like "The Tick" (Spoon!), Batman: The Animated Series, Animaniacs (I got a DVD Collection for my birthday) (Narf!!) -- they are the best!! (J-man thinks they're monkies....)

I saw a copy of "Darkwing Duck" (Keen Gear!) and had to physically restrain myself. I'm rather fond of the new "Curious George" and "The Replacements" oh - and "Jane and the Dragon". I like cartoons.

4) I'm easily distracted.. oooo shiney!!

5) I'm easily amused - which is why I'm rather surprised that I can't think of anything to fill this list. I'm my best own  material.

Okay - to copy the Juggler's weirdness --

6) My drink of choice is "Diet caffeine free Dr. pepper" A lot of people consider that weird. They want to know "Why drink it at all?" -- "For the Caramel color, of course!!"

 7) I've read most of the "perry Mason" novels and, contrary to popular opinion, find Raymond Burr a bad fit for the role.

That's all I can come up with. My hubby doesn't think there's anything weird about me....AWWWWwwwwwww that just warms my heart. :-)

So whaddya think? How weird am I?

Jan. 15, 2007 - Icy Fun
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I have had so much fun stepping out on my porch to take pictures of the "Conditions" outside. Really - though -- the tree has been showing the conditions the best. I mean, really, how many pictures can you take of an ice-packed yard?

Here's what my yard looked like today:

Really - it looks just like it did in my previous post about our ice storm. But look at the tree! It is creaking and clattering. God has given me the weirdest humor (and I love it!) but this is actually fun for me to listen to. There's a huge tree a few streets over - and when the wind blows - I can hear it clattering. It's just amazing!

So - here -- take a gander at our tree.

In the spring it's a Red Oak.

Right now, it's a statue.

Look at this one branch stitting straight up -

It tells quite a tale. See the buds on the very end? And just a bit under that? It had been "Spring" just a few days before the ice hit. So maybe this is spring encased in ice?

Ooo - I wonder what spiritual connotations I can make from this? That could make me positively giddy - and hard to live with, I'm sure. I love learning!!

And this poor lonely leaf...

Is the only thing left hanging on the tree - aside from a few acorns directly over my head. But I can't take a picture of that - the sky is too bright.  The sun came out - and it's positively blinding outside.

It's been interesting living inside the past few days. We are so very blessed to have our power when other areas around us don't.

It will also be interesting to see the world when it thaws out. After the drought we've had - the slow melt will be good for everything green and growing. God answered our prayers for rain - He just sent it in the form of ice.

Jan. 14, 2007 - Stir Crazy
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Well - It's cold.
It's Icy.

(I woke up this morning - minus a voice. I like talking. So here I sit - blogging while the Professor is pounding on the car trying to de-ice it.)

For some reason - I find it (the weather) amusing.

I remember the last major snow storm we had (Years ago) and you could hear the trees creaking and clattering in the wind because of the ice.

Maybe I find it amusing because I've got power and I don't have need to go anywhere. Maybe it's just my weird sense of humor.

Though - I didn't find it amusing yesterday. The Professor and I rarely fight - but yesterday we both wanted to do our own things. And kids being kids wouldn't let us - so we both got frustrated. Seriously, though, if I'd taken into consideration that the weather men had been predicting this for about a week - I'd have bundled the kids up and let them ride their bikes until their legs ached before it hit.

Alas - I was skeptical. The saying around here is that if you don't like the weather - wait a minute - it will change. This weather isn't going to change until, oh, Thursday. The precipitation will stop - but the ice will remain as a reminder of our Winter. And then summer will come and people will complain about it being too hot.  Oo - I digress. Sorry.

So what do you do when it's icy, the kids are stir crazy and the parents are cranky?

Well - the Holy Spirit gave me an answer!

I so love God-kisses like these...

You give them their squirt "guns" - filled with colored water - and send them out!

Yippee!!

Let the fun commence!

I only had 3 colors to work with: Red, green & yellow.

I followed directions on the box and succeeded in getting them all different colors. Mini-Me had pink. Naturally.

J-man had Orange.

(I just couldn't send him out with yellow - it was just wrong)

G had Green.

He had a great time making aliens, smiley faces and rocket ships.

The ice was so hard that the kids could kneel on top and not sink.

But the ice still showed the colors...

This is a heart by Mini-Me.

The next wave of ice was coming through when we went out. The clouds were gray and it was getting dark early and it was only about 5pm. That's why the ice looks gray.

See? We could walk on the ice and not sink through (at least the kids were) and we weren't even the hardest hit area in the region.

I tried to take a picture of the ice on the tree in our front yard - but got a beauty instead - I love this picture!

So I tried again -

It really is pretty.

I put Mini-E on the porch on a blanket - and she played and crawled around pulling on the hedges and chewing on the food coloring bottles.

It won't be long before she needs her own squirt bottle.

The sleet is coming down again today and is supposed to last most of the day. The Professor is going to attempt traveling to work in the morning. Hmmm....

Oh!

And the really good thing about yesterday's excursion?

They didn't squirt each other!!!

Jan. 13, 2007 - Thinking Warm Thoughts..

Greetings from the frozen mid-west!

The weather forecasters have been telling us that an ice storm is coming. I waited to see before I thought anything about it. Maybe it's because we'd gone to the store already for normal shopping and we were stocked and ready.

Yesterday the temps dropped from the high 50's into the 20's in just a few hours. The rain had been coming - and then it started to rain again...and freeze.  That was actually fun to watch.  We could see things right out our back window start to get a layer of ice on their tops. Then the sleet and freezing rain started.

So I got my camera out...very glad to stay inside.

It sounded like someone was throwing salt against the windows. Amazing how much trouble those little pellets can cause.

You can see the ice starting to form:

The Professor came home early. The roads weren't awful when he drove home. But the sleet happened most of the night. I turned on the news about 8:45 this morning. There's a town south of us that the news reported power outages and the stores had no batteries or candles.

So far - no power outages here - just White. And it isn't snow.

Here's what I saw from my porch this morning.

The Jeweled Tree - looks more like a crystal tree:

It sure is pretty -

The professor went out to tackle the ice on the cars (no pics, sorry) and we discovered a layer of sleet and under that a layer of ice. I tried to get a picture of the ice/sleet with a ruler...couldn't get the ruler in the ice. It's pretty solid.

And we're going to get more.

Mini-Me said last night - "I'm so glad we have air conditioning (Meaning heat) because it's cold outside." I'm really grateful, too.  We just found out that our church has cancelled services for tomorrow. So I'm going to go make some hot chocolate and think warm thoughts. And watch cartoons, of course.

Jan. 10, 2007 - A most useful tool
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I found a fantastic book when I was roaming a local bookstore. What's funny - I wasn't even looking for this book. I was looking on books about pre-teen daughters and what you should be talking to them about....(I was feeling very in adequate in this area - and a little shell shocked that my baby is going to be a pre-teen).

When I found "If I'm Diapering the Watermelon, then Where'd I Leave the Baby? Help for the Highly Distractible Mom"  by Carol Barnier, it was by accident. The title made me laugh so I bought the book. The next book I hope comes out should be something like: "Help for the impulse book-buyer."

Anyway - if you are highly distractible - I recommend the book.

One of the nuggets I've gotten out of the book is the Dial-a-Child for  laundry folding duty in her house.  We used to assign laundry duty to a child every day. Which ever child had laundry duty - the other had dishwasher duty. But like the book points out - some days you only do one load of dishes and 12 loads of laundry.

I thought her idea was brilliant. So I borrowed it. Here's how Carol describes it: "It's a simple reminder with a moveable arrow that points to whichever child is up next for folding duty. Now when the laudnry buzzer goes off, I check to see which child is up next and call that cihld in. When the child has folded the laundry, he or she flips the dial. If the dial doesn't get flipped, guess what? The same child has to do the next load."

Like I said, I borrowed her idea. I don't make the kids fold the laundry - yet. But they unload the dryer and transport it to where-ever I need it to be for folding. (I think sorting may come next.)

Here's a close up of just the "Dial"

As you can see - I left room for my other 2 kids. and  I let Mini-Me and G pick out their "Symbols" for their name... They loved having input in that. And they love the dial! It has been a good thing.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon that book.

So - What tip do you have that you love?

Jan. 6, 2007 - This is too cool!

After the HSB updates, My friend Thoughtfulmom had lamented that she missed the "Friends" RSS Function that she had been using previously.

What's that? Was my first reaction...my second: What did I miss?

I did not know that it was possible to monitor all your blogger friends in one location. *Gasp* My third reaction? why didn't know about this sooner?!

Since I was now very interested in the answer to her dilema, I watched the comments - and someone recommended:

Bloglines

So - being a very curious person -- I checked it out. What's the harm? It's free.

And now that I've tried it - I have to share!!!

It took me a bit to enter web addresses - but after the initial set up and subscribing to blogs - keeping up with those blogs is a breeze. AND It's user friendly. This was important to me, with 4 kids that love to distract, it had to be easy.

I love the interface! The only problem came when I discovered that I could not subscribe to all my bloggerfriends. That wasn't an issue with Bloglines..and that's okay - I got most of them.

I highly recommend Bloglines - I've hooked up a few blogs from "blogger"...I can read them all! And only know when something new has been posted. So give it a shot...

I just have one request....

Turn on your RSS feed, people!

Please.

And then tell me you did - so that I can try to subscribe to your blog

Dec. 21, 2006 - A Christmas Stocking stuffed with blog...
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I just had so much fun reviewing Happy Feet that I'm not sure what to blog about.  I'm also wondering what I can review next. I'm not sure I'd have as much reviewing something else.    It's just not every day you get to review "Footloose on Ice".

I just can't believe Christmast is just a few days away! I know many people use this time to ponder - for me, it's just too much fun to spend time pondering. I did have a Christmas present funny. I have yet to find my digital camera. I had it out at the blizzard of '06 and haven't found it since. I've looked EVERYWHERE. So I got out my film camera.  And while I was out of the room two days ago, someone opened up my camera and exposed the film. *grumble grumble* My mom had come up the other day (was it the day we had stitches put in G's toe?) and I had jokingly tiraded about it. G grinned sheepishly and followed me around for a bit and then said "That might just be what you're getting for Christmas."

I had to laugh. I had gone to the effort of telling the Professor that I wanted it to be a surprise. I'm thrilled though. That means the Professor was listening! Especially since I honestly can not find the other camera. I'm also excited because my other camera wasn't working the best. Sometimes the shutter door wouldn't open. Yippeee!! Merry Christmas to me.

PS - I've also found my camera. I, apparently, hadn't looked everywhere. Especially on the floor behind the computer - in just that one little spot.

We've been having such fun with our advent calendar. It's been rather funny to hear the kids learn about Christmas and it's been a hoot for me to learn more about them. The First instance came when we sang "Away in a Manger" I've blogged it and you can read it here.

Yesterday we opened the door on the calendar and discvoered that we needed to talk about what we would give Baby Jesus. My kids are so practical and funny at the same time. Mini-Me decided that she'd give him a snow-globe to remember his birthday forever and a blanket & clothes. G decided that Jesus would need toys to play with and a night light. :-)

I have to admit - I never would have thought to give Jesus a snow globe.

Merry Christmas & Bleach-Free blessings to you!!

Mele Kalikimaka!

I'm still in a Hawaii-type mood.

Dec. 18, 2006 - Happy Feet - A review
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

I'm sure you've either seen it - and if you've not actually viewed the movie - you've at least heard of it. I don't see how you can get away from it. Burger King was giving out toys. The characters have been formed into a gummy snack. It's pretty hard to avoid "Happy Feet".

We went to see it - after the blizzard of '06 and I thought I'd write out my opinion. After all - this is what blogging's all about, isn't it? Besides – after my Year in Review that was all about us – I thought I’d try my hand at reviewing something else. I’m certain I won’t quit my day job.

The story of "Mumble HappyFeet" opens with the introduction of Mumble’s parents: "Memphis" – voiced by Hugh Jackson and "Norma Jean" - voiced by Nicole Kidman. Both do superb impersonations of their characters which are, essentially, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.

Now that I think about it, I could make this the shortest review in history and by telling you that "Happy Feet" is "Footloose" for the arctic set.

No. Really.

 Don't believe me?

Pictoral proof:

Then (1984)

Paramount Pictures' Footloose

 Now (2006)

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

Similarity #1 -- Mumble and Ren both just have to dance. Mumble was born that way – and maybe Ren was, too – but he moves into his town with the need to dance.

Then

Kevin Bacon in Paramount Pictures' Footloose

Now:

Young Mumble (voiced by E.G. Daily ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

This is when Mumble is younger. But both our heroes had to find their own spots to practice. To get away from the frowning glares of those in their own worlds.

 Similarity #2:

In their respective towns and communities: No Dancing.

Period.

That leads me to Similarity #3

The bad guys. For without the bad guys, there would be dancing and the movies would be really, really short.

Kevin Bacon , John Lithgow , Frances Lee McCain and Lori Singer in Paramount Pictures' Footloose

Rev. Shaw watching over his daughter

Noah the Elder (voiced by Hugo Weaving ) observes Miss Viola (voiced by Magda Szubanski ), Young Mumble (voiced by E.G. Daily ) and his class in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

Noah, the elder, watching over the penguin school.

Noah, the Elder, is followed around by a few of the faithful. Later in the movie, he calls them "Brethren". They would be considered the frozen chosen. (Pun both intended and not) They are the tattle-tales. They spout the doctrine put down long ago and kept by Noah the elder. They follow him around, gather around him and murmur and judge others. And the focus of their disapproval is upon Mumble.

Pretty much, "We’ve always done it like this." (Singing)

I’d have to watch Footloose again to make sure – but everyone, except the teenagers, follow Rev. Shaw’s doctrines of "No Dancing". The big difference: In Footloose, dancing is a sin. (That’s not Biblical, by the way) In Happy feet – if you don’t sing, you’re freak and a worthless penguin. But, by golly, don’t you dance because we’ve never done that.

Similarity #4 – The love interests

Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer in Paramount Pictures' Footloose

Ren & Ariel

Gloria (voiced by Brittany Murphy ) and Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

Gloria and Mumble

The girls like their fellow – but the fellas are outcasts. At one point in Happy Feet, you kind of wonder what kind of friend Gloria really is when Mumble tries to sing along to her song (She’s singing Queen’s "Somebody to Love") and she stops him. Granted, he sounds like he’s choking a cat, but she could have been nicer.

Further pictoral similarities between "HappyFeet" and "Footloose". Pictures do not lie.

Kevin Bacon in Paramount Pictures' Footloose

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

See?

"Happy Feet" = "Footloose"

Over all, "Happy Feet" is not a bad movie.  I have hesitations about it being good for small children. The movie is just deep! There are several topics put throughout the movie that make it hard for children to understand and sit through.

Let me see if I can remember them all.

Topic #1 – The Emperor penguins have to sing to find a mate. It’s taught at the penguin elementary school that they have to find their heart song, in order to attract a mate, in order to make "the egg". The kids all try to hear their heart song. Mumble hears a beat – and is chastised for it because it’s not a real song.

Topic #2 – Mumble being an outcast because he can’t sing. When Norma Jean returns from fishing, she’s going to meet her son for the first time. Memphis tells Mumble NOT to dance when he meets his mom. Because Mumble can’t help but dance when he’s happy. Memphis is rather ashamed of his son and Mumble’s differences. Instead of standing up for Mumble, he treats him the same as everyone else. They have a reunion at the end of the movie, when Memphis actually tries to dance with his son, but it’s at the end of the movie.

Topic #3 – The heart songs that are sung, under the context of point #1 above, makes all the songs really quite suggestive. It might be a good way to introduce "the talk" to your kids, or maybe even dating.  When we meet Norma Jean & Memphis - she's on the hunt for a mate. They sing a song from the well reknown artist - "Prince".    What's that?     Yes, I said Prince.           My friend "Emma'sMom" had to point it out to me. (He was not on my listening list when I was a teen.) I did think it funny when Memphis sang "Heartbreak Hotel" - Did I mention that Hugh Jackman did a phenomenal job as Memphis?

Topic #4 – Mumble discovers aliens are destroying the fishing. He chases after them. He chases after the fishing boats. (This might be a good time to talk about over-fishing and conservation) He ends up in the zoo. This is a sad part of the movie. My 6 year old son said – "Mom, I don’t like this part." He never says that about a movie. That’s his sister’s line (usually accompanied by tears).

The comic relief is Robin Williams – and it’s welcome relief in this movie. He does a fantastic job as "Ramone" and his gang of "Amigos". They immediately take a liking to Mumble – and LOVE his dancing! They tell him he’s got charisma (and lots of it!) and they welcome him with open arms.

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

Mumble, Ramone and the Amigos - very welcome comic relief.

Mumble finds out that these penguins don’t sing – they gather rocks. Whoever gathers the most rocks – wins! This is rather a relief to Mumble, who can't sing, to find penguins who don't sing.

Enter, "The Guru" aka "Lovelace" – also voiced by Robin Williams.

Lovelace (voiced by Robin Williams ) in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

In order to ask "The guru" a question, you have to bring him a rock. One rock per question. Mumble asks him questions without really getting an answer – and Lovelace gets upset and tells everyone to leave. He disappears behind his rock pile with some girl penguins.

Personally, if I were a girl penguin, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere with this guy. But I’m not, and he does have the most pebbles. It's not exactly left to wonder what they're doing behind that pile of rocks. It's one of those things that if your child understands what they're doing behind that rock pile - it's not the fault of the movie.

The plastic can holder around his neck plays a part later in the story. But here, (in the above picture) he’s claiming it gives him the ability to channel voices. Later, it chokes him. I’m sure there can be some commentary made here about illegal gains choking us…but my review is unfunny enough now.

Really, the movie isn’t bad. I rather liked it. If I were to grade it I’d give it a B- or a C+. It’s just a DEEP movie that kids just won’t get. I laughed at some of the songs (Penguins singing to Queen is just funny) and the characters (Ramone and the Amigos are well written and voiced). There's even a cameo by the late Steve Irwin, as an elephant seal, who gives a wandering group of penguins advice and warning.

My shining moment came when, after watching Mumble dance and thinking it looked liked the footwork of Savion Glover, I discovered that it was the footwork of Savion Glover.

The dancing sequences are great!

This is a melancholy movie – so watch with that in mind. After the hit of "Cars" - one of my favorite movies - this movie doesn't have the action that many youngsters are looking for. The story might seem slow to them. It ends very happily – and amusingly with the penguins meeting the humans.

But getting there could seem long in coming.

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood ) and Gloria (voiced by Brittany Murphy ) teach the other penguins to dance in Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet

I know "Footloose" has a final dance scene but I can’t find the picture. Just imagine it, because  I’m sure it looked much like the picture above - with less snow and more humans.

Editor's Note: Because you asked so nicely - and I forgot to include the information - pictures can be found through these Yahoo! Links: Footloose Production photos and Happy Feet Production Photos. There's more similarities in the pictures - like the court room scene - but you can see those for yourself. Bleach free blessings!

Dec. 11, 2006 - It's a sign...
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

It's a sign that you're raising your children in a denominational church when:

You're about to sing "Away in a Manger" with your 6 year old son and he says:

"Can we just sing the first and last?"

Dec. 10, 2006 - Miscellaneous postings...
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

Okay - I'm sure there's lots of conversing about the new set up here in the blogosphere. I think I may have to visit the forums. This is weird. It's taking quite a long time for this stuff to load up.

Anyway --

I was going to make some random posts...

I think I'm nearly done with my Christmas. I have some miscellaneous people I'd like to bless - but I can't figure out how to bless them exactly. The biggest thing I need to do is buy for The Professor. I have no idea what to get him because he has no idea what he wants. I'm seriously thinking about getting him a gift card to Lowe's. I'm thinking it's not very sentimental - but he'd use it for his budding woodworking hobby.

The kids and I have been having a blast with an Advent calendar we found - and coupling it with a lapbook on the Christmas symbols - we're learning about the symbols of Christmas. The fun part was they heard the "Legend of the Candy Cane" today in church. Mini- Me asked if I would teach it to her again so she'd be able to remember it. I was impressed at her thinking. She often impresses me like that though.

I'd love to take pictures of our fun - but I can't find my digital camera. If you see it - send it home.

Enough rambling for now. I'm going to try to formulate my thoughts into a "real" entry.  We'll see how that goes.

Dec. 2, 2006 - For No particular reason
Posted in 5-pocket Jeans

We've always watched the Wiggles - long before they were on the Disney Channel.

I have to admit - it took me awhile to get used to them. But when I did - I went all out. I really liked them. We can sing many of their songs - "Fruit salad" anyone? How about "Cold Spaghetti"?

There was just something fun about watching these guys have fun. It was always apparent that they really liked doing what they do for the kids and because of the kids.

Though, I've always been partial to Anthony (The Blue Wiggle), I've never pictured the group without Greg. He was the leader! The big kids outgrew their films - but whenever we go places that has cable TV - they'll watch the tv show. Now J man is coming up and we've gotten our Wiggly, Wiggly Christmas off the shelf and I think he's enjoying the Wiggles very much.

It's kind of strange thinking that J might not know who Greg is.

http://www.thewiggles.com/us/mediacentre/news/31

I think I'll miss him.

Good Journey, Greg.

and Good luck to the new guy.

About Me
There are four kids here in the laundry pile, often times, playing king of the hill. Which amuses me - because I am the supreme high ruler of this laundry! *Looking around* ... There's also 1 hubby and a cat in here somewhere....
