Communication FUNdamentals

We interupt your Mother's Day to bring you this Proud Mommy Moment!

My seven year old son, Christopher, just loves the Lord!  He will often ask me questions out of the blue in order to understand God better.  He loves telling stories and he just loves talking on the phone to Grandma.  Well the three of those loves met each other in a blessed way and I tell you this story on Mother's Day for two reasons:  First because my children make me so proud!  They are special treasures from the Lord that always bless me!  Second because today is Defending the Faith SONday.

Christopher will often ask if he can call Grandma on the phone and talk to her.  He will spend hours telling her all about his computer games which are a passion for him.  My mother has the patience of Job!  She will sit and listen, often having no idea what he is talking about, for an hour or so!  Chris will begin his conversation downstairs and eventually wind up sitting under his loft bed on his bean bag chair regailing her with the intricacies of SpongeBob's computer adventures.   Many times I will go looking for him and find him still on the phone long after I thought they had hung up!

The other day, he had been on the phone with Grandma when I came upstairs to ask  my daughter for her prescription so that I could call in her refill.  Standing next to my daughter's room I heard my son still on the  phone with Grandma after about an hour!  He was telling Grandma all about Noah and the Ark.  Next I heard him ask her why she didn't believe in God. (My parents are Atheists.)  He listened for a while and began asking her if she wanted to live forever in Heaven.  After a little while he said..."Grandma, are you trying to get me to not believe in God?"

Now I know my mother would never do that, but I was amazed that a seven year old child would put together her explaination of why she didn't believe in God and the notion that that might influence him!  I was further astounded to find that a seven year old would be so grounded in his faith that he would think to ask this question and not be swayed by any comments his beloved Grandmother would give as to why SHE didn't believe!

As an evangelist, Chris was a tad pushy with my mom, but then again, he is only seven!  lol  What came out of his mouth next almost knocked me over!  He said..."Well, that's your choice."  Okay, now I have goosebumps!  This kid knew three things that very few Christians understand:

1. You cannot always lead someone directly to church in one sitting.
2. God gives each person free will to choose Him which also means they have free will not to and we must respect that.
3. You should present the Gospel to those who don't have Christ in their life, but you should also know when to back off.

After he got off the phone, he was a little sad because he really wants to see Grandma in Heaven.  He asked me..."What do we do now?"  I told him to pray.  They are still young.  Just because they don't believe now, doesn't mean that they won't choose to give their lives to Jesus later on.  I told him that he told her how he feels and he told her about Jesus and why it is important for her to believe and give her life to Christ, now all we can do is pray.  Maybe some day she will want to hear more about Jesus.

My mom and I talked a few days later.  She wanted to make sure that I didn't think she was trying to persuade him not to believe in God.  She said she tried to explain as little as possible so as to avoid that.  He is only 7.  But he was relentless in asking her questions and telling her all about Jesus.  She had no idea where he came up with the idea that she was trying to get him not to believe.  She was very  happy that he felt close enough to her to discuss something he felt so strongly about.  She said she just wanted to explain that she did tell him that she respected our family's (and his) beliefs.

I told her that I was sure it went this way. She asked me if I had heard the conversation and I told her that I had heard the tail end.  I joked that I didn't interrupt him because I felt she could hold her own with a seven year old.  She said..."Well, I'm not so sure!  I was impressed at how well he articulated his beliefs and how much he knew about the stories of the Bible!"

Praise God!  Maybe one day...A little child will lead them.

About Me

I was raised by two Atheists of Jewish heritage, married a non practicing Catholic and became a non denominational Christian due, in part, to some Amway meetings and a Jehovah's Witness who came to my door. My purple crayon writes with humor and almost always a little out of the lines. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This blog is my creative and fun way of sharing my thoughts on communication skills relating mostly to sharing and defending the faith. It also reveals a bit about how the Lord took this shy Agnostic girl and allowed her to find her voice and her purpose, a zany voice to the Christian community with insight as to what unbelievers need to hear about Christ Jesus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DON'T MISS: Tuesday Tips, Misadventures of Foot in Mouth Man, Friday Funnies, Defending the Faith SONdays ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more creative fun with JoJo you can visit www.ArtofEloquence.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." -Proverbs 25:11
