We're going to be in a TV documentary on Homeschooling!
Can you believe it?
Early this week, I received a phone call from a Grad Student at USC. She is the producer of a local TV show called Impact that is on 40 local cable stations. She explained that she is doing a documentary on homeschooling and had come across my profile on the internet. She found what I do facinating and wanted to interview me about being in her documentary.
I answered several questions for her about homeschooling and how our family does it. I told her that there really isn't a typical homeschooler as each of us homeschools in a unique way. But if there was one, it woudln't be us because my dd actually attends a not-so-local public high school part time for some AP courses and a performance choir. She was very interested when I told her that my dd was applying to several Ivy League colleges and that she was an instructor at the local karate studio.
I did tell her of my concerns that the footage could be edited in such a way as to make us look bad. I have heard it done before. She assured me that she was neither biased for nor against homeschooling and that she was open to learning about it. She said she felt the viewers would be interested in seeing what it's really all about.
I told her that some of our schooling uses text books in a sit down traditional schooling atmosphere but that much of it takes place as we live life. We drive my dd to school and back discussing life, current events and pointing out issues to discuss as we go. I take every opportunity to develop my children's minds with critical thinking by pointing out situations and having them think through how they came to be etc. She agreed to put a wireless mic on me and film us driving my dd to school to show how we do this! AND she wants to get some footage of my dd teaching at the karate studio.
I discussed this with my dh and with my kidlings and all felt this was a wonderful opportunity to show what homeschooling is really like. They certainly can't say homeschoolers "don't know anything" with my dd ranked 4th in her public school senior class! They certainly cant' say she is a wallflower with her a black belt instructor in karate and 150 trophies to her credit. They certainly can't say she doesn't speak well as they will be interviewing her on camera. They won't think my kids sheltered or that they fit the notion that homeschool kids are hidden in the closet with a book in one hand and a nightlight in the other as both my kids are involved in MANY extra curricular activities such as karate, football, choir, leadership conferences etc.
I even called HSLDA and emailed them the release form they sent me to look it over. They said that the it is a standard release and that any publicity for homeschooling is good even if it is bad. They said that Michael Smith did an interview once that was misquoted and twisted, but after it aired, it drew several people to call and investigate homeschooling!
We prayed on it and have decided to go ahead with it. They are coming Wednesday, November 28th to film and I think she said it airs in the middle of December.
Please pray that it will be a positive experience for my children, for the show and for those watching. Please pray that we will be a shining example of Christians and homeschoolers. It is going to be a typical day in the life kind of thing (whatever typical is for us lol) so I am not sure what will take place. We usually are unstructured in our discussions and we never know where a homeschooling day will lead us. :D
We are letting the Lord lead us, as we do each day, so I am sure we will be in good hands.
What do you all think? Would you do it?
