A Day Without Communication is like...IMPOSSIBLE! Tip#7: Job Success

Posted in Tuesday Tips
Continuing this week with my series, A Day Without Communication is like...IMPOSSIBLE!

You may be able to get through your entire life without ever having to make a speech but you can't get through one single day without communicating something to somebody!

In the last six weeks, I have shared how communication is important, not just for making speeches or for debate, but for every day life.  I talked about the importance of communication skills in marriage, parenting, defending and sharing your faith, learning, college prep and in interviewing for a job.  There are three more major areas of life in which effective communication plays an important role: job success, business ownership and friendships.  Let's talk a bit about job success this week.

7. Effective Communication for Job Success
Once you've got the job you want, or at least the job you want to keep, what is the one skill you need in order to get ahead?  You have probably guessed by now it's communication skills!

People with good communication skills are more likely to do a better job which would naturally result in promotions. Here are some of the results of various studies on the impact of communication skills on job success:

* Research done by the U.S. Department of Labor concluded that the skills most needed by employers in the 21st century that tomorrow's workers must master are "listening and speaking abilities."

* According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the most common reason for shooting errors by police officers is "bad communication".

* Studies also indicate that good communication skills reduce the number of malpractice lawsuits for physicians.  The American Medical Association now encourages members to take communication classes!

* Your communication sensitivity is a better indicator of job success than your cognitive IQ according to R.L. Dilenschneider of the Dilenschneider Group.  He believes you must have excellent communication skills to stand out in a company.

* This is echoed by another study done in 1997 where it was found that effective communication skills can improve chances for leadership positions because today's managers and CEO's rely more on "the power to influence" in order to motivate their employees rather than the old "command and control" techniques.

* According to a 1997 study, over 90% of personnel managers at 500 U.S. companies say that more communication skill is required for a successful career today.

* Harvard Business Review readers rated "the ability to communicate" over ambition, education, and a willingness to work hard as the reason why an employee would be "promotable".

* Persuasion skills and the ability to interact with others result in greater career advancement and higher salaries for graduates according to a 20 year study of Stanford University MBA's.

* The icing on the employee's cake is that another study by AT&T and Stanford University found that people who actually enjoy giving speeches earn much more than those how avoid public speaking.

So we see that a career day without effective communication skills is like... IMPOSSIBLE too!  The more effective a communicator you are, the more successful you will be in climbing that corporate ladder.

Next week, I am going to share why communication skills are so vital for those who decide to be their own boss and the following week I will discuss the importance of communication in making and maintaining friendships.  Stay tuned!

About Me

I was raised by two Atheists of Jewish heritage, married a non practicing Catholic and became a non denominational Christian due, in part, to some Amway meetings and a Jehovah's Witness who came to my door. My purple crayon writes with humor and almost always a little out of the lines. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This blog is my creative and fun way of sharing my thoughts on communication skills relating mostly to homeschooling and sharing and defending the faith. It also reveals a bit about how the Lord took this shy Agnostic girl and allowed her to find her voice and her purpose, a zany voice to the Christian community with insight as to what unbelievers need to hear about Christ Jesus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll share news items, quotes, family friendly humor, tips, trivia, and my newest feature: Question of the Week. I invite you to come share your thoughts! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more creative fun with JoJo you can visit www.ArtofEloquence.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." -Proverbs 25:11
