Merry CHRISTmas Carnival of FUNschooling Today!

Welcome to the 3rd Annual
Merry CHRISTmas Carnival of FUNschooling!

Keeping Christ in our CHRISTmas is getting more and more difficult.  In recent years the true meaning of the HOLYday has been obscured by commercialism, the focus on Santa and Hollywood's insistance that the true meaning of CHRISTmas is the joy of  family.   With the economy so bad, everyone is having a hard time buying gifts this year.  This can be a blessing!  There has never been a more perfect time to bring back the true meaning of CHRISTmas.  Let’s celebrate CHRISTmas this year.  CHRISTmas with a capital CHRIST!

Come walk the Merry CHRISTmas Carnival of FUNschooling this year and visit the blogs, videos, sites and newsletters that help us keep Christ in our CHRISTmas.  Grab your eggnog and enjoy the 3rd Annual Merry CHRISTmas Carnival of FUNschooling!

Grace Talk Soup

Our first stop along the carnival is Grace Talk Soup, my weekly podcast.  This Thursday, December 18th at 8am PST/ 11am EST is my Open Discussion where you are invited to share how YOU keep Christ in your CHRISTmas!  Come share your family traditions with my listeners and hear how others work to keep Christ in their CHRISTmas each year!

It's OK to Say Merry CHRISTmas!

Two women from Ohio are spearheading a billboard campaign that encourages people to say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays."  Last year, Joanne Brown and her friend, Linda Bennett, noticed that employees at many retail stores did not say "Merry Christmas." The pair, part of a group called the Merry Christmas Billboard Ladies, raised money to put up billboards encouraging people to say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays."  This year, Brown and Bennett are raising money to place billboards that say "I miss hearing you say Merry Christmas" and "It's OK to say Merry Christmas." Both billboards are signed "Jesus."  Read the rest of the story here!

More traditions and crafts Here's an example from part 1:

Pray for the Sender
This is the time of year we start getting cards and notes from friends old and new, far and near. What to do with all the Christmas cards you receive? Keep them in a basket or bowl. Every night when you read aloud as a family, bring one or two out and pray for the family who sent it.

Communication FUNdamentals

JoJo's blog post, "What are you doing this year to show Christ in CHRISTmas?" shows us how we can communicate Christ this CHRISTmas so that we are a shining example to those around us of God's agape love?  Here are some ideas:

1. No matter how crowded the stores or how difficult it is to navigate rush hour traffic, let's vow to smile and be courteous this CHRISTmas.

2. No matter how busy we are, let's pledge to take a few minutes to hold the door open for that elderly woman holding six packages and keeping track of four grandkids.

3. No matter how many times Uncle Elmer has made rude comments about our homeschooling and tested your son to see if he "knows anything", let's treat him with respect and kindness.

Keep Christ in CHRISTmas Carol Contest!
They are no longer taking entries but you can vote on your favorites!  I wanted to include this blog contest because it is so creative and fun!  The idea was to call in and record your favorite CHRISTmas song that is about Jesus and not anything secular.  Way to keep Christ in your CHRISTmas, Teach Kids the Bible.com!!

Say What You Mean Defending the Faith
One way to keep Christ in your CHRISTmas is to truly internalize your faith and be ready to share and defend it.  Understanding God's Word strengthens your faith, but being able to articulate it allows you to make a difference in the secular world and bring faith to others.  You cannot effectively share or defend your faith without good communication skills.  No two people see the world exactly the same way so there is no one size fits all way to share your faith!  That's why Say What You Mean Defending the Faith is so unique!  We must relate to each soul individually.  That's why sharing and defending the faith is really a communication skill that takes practice!  Online classes beginning again in January!

Jars of Clay's Little Drummer Boy

Creating a Jesse Tree
Creating a Jesse Tree is a family activity that children enjoy in Advent Season, during the month leading up to Christmas. This tradition gets its name from Isaiah 11:1 “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” In this verse Isaiah wrote that a ruler “from the stem of Jesse”, the line of David, would come to rule in peace, foretelling the birth of Jesus.  Read the rest here!

Helping Your Teen Keep Christ in their CHRISTmas!
Anika's blogpost says "There is no reason why we can’t teach our kids, no matter what age they are, the true meaning of Christmas and how to keep Christ in Christmas. One of the ways I’m going to do this is by giving them only 3 gifts each. Three represents Jesus in so many ways, like the trinity, the gifts of the three wisemen and that Jesus rose on the third day."

Advent Journey to Bethlehem

Ok next up we come to  Christmas on the Web:   with wonderful articles from Christianity Today!

Walking along the carnival we come to A Joyful Heart CHRISTmas with some great articles about the symbols and stories surrounding CHRISTmas!

Next we come to  Christmas Around The World: A review of traditions from various countries.  If you want to do a study on different cultures and compare your Christ centered celebration of Jesus' birth to how the world celebrates CHRISTmas, this is a good place to start.

Next along the carnival we have
Audrey's Christmas Page: Extensive list of Christian holiday resources from TeacherHelp.

Next we come to some websites that give us the history of CHRISTmas.  The History of Christmas: has some informative articles from Christianity Today.

Next we have The History Channel's History of Christmas: Has extensive information from the History Channel on the traditions of CHRISTmas from a historical perpective.

Next we stop at The Symbols and Traditions of Christmas: Why mistletoe, holly and greens are included, among other traditions. It tells the origins of each symbol and you can go over those with your children interjecting how you use the symbols of CHRISTmas to honor Christ.

Now here we come to a wonderful site called The Nativity Pages: A nice page of links on the history of Christmas traditions from the Rev. Phil Greetham, a Methodist pastor in the UK. It shares some insight on the historical and scientific facts behind the history of CHRISTmas, the date of Christ's birth, the stars mentioned in the Bible and the nativity.  Opens good discussions on the Bible with your kids this CHRISTmas!

Let's take a moment to worship a bit more on our carnival journey:

O Holy Night

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Next we come to a site that is nothing pretty to look at but has some great information for us on Is Christmas Christian?

Another great CHRISTmas site is The 12 Days of Christmas: What's that song all about, anyway?  Some have asserted it's a nonsense song and others have suggested that it is a song of Christian instruction dating to the 16th century religious wars in England, with hidden references to the basic teachings of the Faith.  Read all about the facts while you and your children gain a better understanding of CHRISTmas.

Next we come to some CHRISTmas Craft Ideas!  These are from a fun, educational website for teachers called Apples for the Teacher.  This page has a lot of Christian religious craft ideas that will help you have fun with the kids this CHRISTmas season as you have time to talk to them about the real meanings behind CHRISTmas!

Along the Carnival we come to some Christian Activities more religious in nature to remind us of the reason for the season. They have various Christian Christmas Activities Stories, Plays, Poems, Rhymes, Coloring Pages, Games, Word Searches, and Recitals.

Would you like to give some free CHRISTmas eCards that keep CHRIST in your CHRISTmas?  These are free from Cross Daily!

Now we come to some webpages that have some free CHRISTmas unit studies on various topics.  These are always fun for the kids and help open discussion on the reason for the season:

First we come to the Narnia Unit which includes a book summary, questions and activities as well as some further lesson ideas for The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Next we come to Legend of the Candy Cane complete with a poem!

Next along the carnival we come to VERY popular Christian units from Karen Caroe!  You will find the 'Names of Jesus Unit Study', 'Symbols of Christmas Unit', and the beloved hymn-based unit, 'Good Christian Men Rejoice'.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed the Merry CHRISTmas Carnival of FUNschooling!  Don't forget that the carnival will remain posted in the links section at the right under Carnival of FUNschooling.  And don't forget to check back with us in September for the next Carnival of FUNschooling!

Carnival of FUNschooling Dec. 15th! Come give me your nominations!!

The semi-annual Carnival of FUNschooling will be held right here on Friday, December 15th.

I believe in the power of using humor and creativity in teaching.  Putting the fun in school helps focus children with ADD, calm the fears of shy children, inject some excitement into a dull subject and facilitate learning and retention.  That's why all Art of Eloquence products use humor and hands-on, creative activities!

The Carnival of FUNschooling is a list of links to all the best and brightest ideas in teaching.  Some of them will be offering specials or free samples for my carnival visitors!

If you know of a website, blog, curricula, magazine or anything else creative and fun for homeschoolers, please post it here or email me at jojo@artofeloquence.com.

Our next stop along the carnival is our very own FIMM!
Foot in Mouth Man is our recurring character from the Misadventures of Foot in Mouth Man episodes that air on our blog each Wednesday.  FIMM is a nice guy but he just has a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth-sometimes both feet!  His comical communication faux pas are used by many homeschoolers as a mini communication lesson for their children.  And now FIMM is a video star!  FIMM just finished work on his very first video!  FIMM Video will be coming to our blog and website just as soon as JoJo can figure out how to do that techie stuff!  But for now, come see FIMM right here in his very first FIMM Video!

Next along the carnival is a very creative homeschool blogger, Jennie Von Eggars!
Her blog is such fun as she posts all sorts of fun and creative ideas for homeschoolers to try!  Jennie also has a website called CreativeHomeschooler.com and she is one of the authors of Times Tales, a very creative and fun way for young kids to learn their times tables!  Jennie is offering carnival goers $3.00 off on any purchase of Times Tales. The next stop along the carnival is Kris Bordessa's site!
Kris has written a book called Team Challenges which I loved so much that my endorsement appears on the back cover!  The book is filled with fun challenges for team building and communication in a group!  Fabulous book for a co op class!

Skipping down the carnival road we come to Hands of a Child!
Ready-to-Assemble Lapbook-Style Project Packs!  They give away a free lapbooking unit every three months.  Anyone who is interested just has to go to their home page and click on the link on the left that says Freebie. These are very creative and fun and you can even join their Yahoo group called Hands of a Child Talk!

Next stop along the way is Homeschooler's NoteBook!
Homeschooler's Notebook is a free weekly newsletter just for homeschoolers with all kinds of wonderful information presented!  The newsletter even allows you to ask a homeschooling question and get several responses in the next issue!!

This is a great site for kids to learn about nutrition in a fun and interactive way!

Our next stop brings us to servingtheKingofkings
She is the winner of the Communication FUNdamentals July Create-A-Word Contest:    Back in July we had a contest to see who could come up with a word that meant the act of teaching using humor.  Her dh came up with Scholaughticism!  You can read more about the contest and runners up there.  She has some great posts on her blog as well!

Walking down the carnival we find Creativehsmom!
Her blog says "Who says learning can't be fun?" and she means it too!  Her blog is full of fun ideas and tips for homeschoolers.  Go check it out and tell her JoJo says "Happy FUNschooling"!

Further down the road we come to some sites that need no introduction!  The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and HomeschoolBlogger.com are the best of homeschooling!
The Old Schoolhouse Magazine offers so many wonderful articles and tips for homeschoolers run by Paul and Gena Suarez who also run Homeschool Blogger.com.  HomeschoolBlogger.com is the best place to have a homeschool blog!  Paul and Gena make the blog community here feel like one big happy family!  If you don't have a blog here or get their magazine, you are missing out!!  They have contests and great offers on both the blog and the website so go check them out and see how they can help your happy homeschool!!

As we walk down the carnival let's stop in with FIMM one more time!
I have been asked about FIMM so much since he joined our blog.  People are so taken with this well meaning communication blunderer that folks were relating their favorite episodes!  We decided to take an unofficial poll to determine people's favorite Foot in Mouth Man episode.  What we found was that we couldn't agree on one favorite so here are a few that folks said were their favorites:  Employment Application, Used Car Sale Ad, Dog for Sale and our very first FIMM episode!

Ok moving further down the carnival we come to Usborne Books!
My son just loved the Usborne Kid Kits we used for science last year!  They come with everything you need to do the experiments and a colorful book that makes it easy to teach the lessons!  He had a ball!  The only problem with the Usborne Kid Kits is that there isn't an endless supply of them!!

Now here we come to a blog that has me in stitches: TC who writes: A Fish In My Hair!
This lady is so funny in the way she relates her experiences of everyday homeschooling, that I am laughing so hard I am practically crying!!  If you have never read her commentary, you are really in for a treat!

An absolutely breath-taking blog I found recently is a Picture Blog.
This woman takes amazing pictures and posts them up on her blog for all to enjoy God's beauty!  What a treat for the eyes and to meditate on God's handiwork!

Moving down the road we come to another wonderful find on Homeschool Blogger: FreeStuffForHomeschoolers!
Julie Knott posts tons of free stuff for homeschoolers on her blog making life easier and more affordable for one income homeschool families!  Julie also has a free newsletter you should check out too!  It's on the left side of her blog!

Further along we find the Say What You Mean Convention!
This is a virtual online convention for Christians to learn communication skills!  Celebrated each year around Former President Ronald Reagan's birthday in February (He was known as the Great Communicator and known for his humor and Christian outlook).  This past February was the 1st annual Say What You Mean Convention but the Say What You Mean Convention 2007 is set to be even bigger and better with live interactive workshops for the kids and more games and prizes and fun as this past year!  Check out the fun we had this past February and get ready for even more fun this coming year!!

Next  we come to Hands and Hearts:
They produce unique, hands-on living history kits for various time periods.  Each kit contains absolutely everything needed to complete 10 - 15 living history projects.  Examples include restoring a genuine 2,000 year old coin, mummifying "Pharaoh Fruitenkhamen" using authentic mummification techniques, hand-sewing a genuine leather pouch and filling it with glass marbles, a buffalo-horn whistle (yes, real buffalo horn) and other pioneer goodies, panning for gold (real gold included), creating hand-dipped beeswax candles, building a fully functional miniature catapult, and much more.  They are offering you all a special:
enter the word "carnival" as a coupon code, you will receive 10% off your entire order- expires midnight on Saturday, September 23.

Now we come to a brand new Yahoo group called DisneySchooling!
This is a fun group of homeschoolers with Disneyland passes!  Any member can plan a trip there and post for others to join them.  They also find a way to get in some schooling along the way!  Anyone living near the Disneyland in California or can get there, this is a fun group for you!

Another great homeschool magazine along the carnival is Homeschool Digest!
Homeschool Digest is a quarterly journal for family discipleship and has quite a lot of interesting articles on various topics of Christian homeschooling that brings a new and creative perspective.  If you currently subscribe, you will notice Art of Eloquence in there!

Next along the Carnival of FUNschooling we have SpunkyHomeschool!
Spunky is...well, spunky!  She has a blog on HSB where she gives her very insightful thoughts on various aspects of homeschooling in the news.  She gives a fresh perspective to the items of the day and usually references various links where you can look up the original source to find more information.  If you are a Christian homeschooler, Spunky's blog is a must see!

Rounding the bend here we come to Homeschool Christian.com!
I have been a member there for some time gleaning tidbits from the seasoned homeschoolers on almost every topic imaginable!  This message board for Christian homeschoolers has just about every homeschool topic.  Just about anything in your Christian homeschool that you need help with will be answered in grace by any number of the members!  It's a wonderful resource for any Christian homeschooler whether you are just starting out or have questions about graduating your homeschooler!

As we are nearing the end of the Carnival of FUNschooling for September 2006 we come to Grapevine Studies!
Grapevine Studies mission is to is to provide believers with a method and curriculum to study and teach the Word of God using timelines, stick figures, words, symbols and colors in an interactive chronological format.  It's a fun way to teach the Bible for K-12!

The next blog we come to is that of Jaminacema!
She is Jamin!  This busy bee posts the best tips and ideas for busy homeschoolers and she does it all with a fabulous positive attitude that just beams all over her visitors!  She is always thinking outside the box and thankfully she posts them too!

We simply could not fit in all the wonderful sites and blogs we found so that is why the Carnival of FUNschooling will be back twice a year to give you more FUNschooling ideas and links!  Thank you to all who contacted me with your favorite sites and links.  Be assured that if we weren't able to use them this time at the Carnival of FUNschooling September 2006, we will try to make them available at the Carnival of FUNschooling December 2006!

Happy FUNschooling!

About Me

I was raised by two Atheists of Jewish heritage, married a non practicing Catholic and became a non denominational Christian due, in part, to some Amway meetings and a Jehovah's Witness who came to my door. My purple crayon writes with humor and almost always a little out of the lines. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This blog is my creative and fun way of sharing my thoughts on communication skills relating mostly to homeschooling and sharing and defending the faith. It also reveals a bit about how the Lord took this shy Agnostic girl and allowed her to find her voice and her purpose, a zany voice to the Christian community with insight as to what unbelievers need to hear about Christ Jesus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll share news items, quotes, family friendly humor, tips, trivia, and my newest feature: Question of the Week. I invite you to come share your thoughts! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more creative fun with JoJo you can visit www.ArtofEloquence.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." -Proverbs 25:11
