Like many of you who are reading this, I
have had a lot of experience teaching my own children, and some
experience teaching others. I was just pondering the fact, though, that
one of my current students in my homeschool coop computer class is
quite gifted, unlike most other students I have had.. In fact that is a
challenge for me as his teacher.
Here's the challenge. The gifted boy is 10 years old. The class
of five contains kids from age 8 to 11. I find myself spending a
lot of time helping the 8-year-old, and very little helping the gifted
boy. What I find I have to do is prepare ahead of time. I
need materials for the class, which I go through with them
step-by-step. But the gifted boy can solve the problem we are
working on by himself, which is better--he learns logical thinking this
way. So what does he do with the rest of the class period?
I have been preparing something for him to work on. In the book I
am working on, Logo Adventures, you will find frequent "extra credit"
challenges. These are the ones I am giving this child. So
in fact the book will be able to cover the gamut, from the 8-year-old
needing lots of guidance to the child who can take it and run.
I have decided to work on this book hard for a while and have it
available as soon as I can, rather than in the summer. Stay tuned!
Blessings,
Phyllis Wheeler

As a mom of two gifted children, I am so happy to hear that you are addressing this boy's needs. I have read so many articles recently about gifted children in the classroom (mostly public school) who are neglected. The teachers feel they don't need help so they don't need them. The truth is that they need assistance just as much as the slower learners do but in different ways. Giving him extra materials or more advanced work is exactly what they need in order to blossom and feel invloved. Many gifted children get bored and begin a detest for school or classroom learning and prefer to discover things on their own. They may even act up in class.
I applaud you!! Great job in assessing his needs and pulling in other resources to help him. I know it is more work for you as the teacher, but this boy and his family appreciate it I am sure!!
