Confessions of a Homeschool Dad

Aug. 17, 2006

I am SO out of touch...

I've accepted the fact that I'm pretty much out of touch with "mainstream American society".  As a committed Christian (meaning, I think, that I believe my Christianity extends beyond Sunday), that's just part of the package.

So I'm used to the weird looks I've gotten from coworker-guys because I didn't want to go to the strip club.  I'm accustomed to the "Oh!  Sorry!"s when people swear around me and assume that I'll break in pieces just because they've never heard me swear.  And I now fully expect the unconfortable looks when I invite people to church events.

Something that I'm still getting used to is being on the "freak fringe" of the Christian community.  Most people I meet at various churches who call themselves Christians (and I only say it that way because I have no way of really knowing) think I'm a little nuts, too.

Whether it's my "no women in leadership" stance, my belief that the Bible really is God's Word, or the fact that I homeschool, I know I'm considered the odd one in the room.  But, in general, I still "belong" in the group, because they are (or are trying to be) committed Christians.

After this Monday, after "The Incident", I don't know if that's the case any more.  And I'm hoping you can let me know if I'm just a huge freak or if I might be on to something here...

HOW THE INCIDENT CAME TO BE

You see, I try to listen to Christian radio when I can.  My tastes run to Contemporary Christian generally, so I'll listen to one of a few Texas-based stations on the Internet when I can.

This Monday, I was listening to what seems to be perennially the "#1 Major Market Contemporary Christian Radio Station" (as far as the CCR industry is concerned, anyway) and was shocked at what I heard.

Now, before I tell you about The Incident, let me tell you a few things about me.  First of all, I'm pretty hard to shock.  I wasn't raised in a Christian household and I've seen a lot in my short life.  I generally don't expect Christian behavior out of non-Christian society and have more or less gotten used to the things that a depraived mind will come up with.

And it is almost impossible to shock me with anything on Christian radio because of the milquetoast attitude that they feel they must carry to please most of their audience.

However, I was floored by the "news" segment of their morning show this Monday.

THE INCIDENT

The news segment started with the bubbly, happy DJette co-host of the Morning Show saying:

"Well...today is the day that most mothers are singing, 'It's the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year'.  Most area schools have started today and...."

Ummmmm....Hello?  Am I the only one seeing the problem here?

A Christian radio station is saying that "the most wonderful day of the year" for most presumably Christian mothers is the day they get rid of their kids!?!?

I mean, let's just forget that they are subconsciously using a Christmas song to equate "the kids leaving for school" with "the birth of our Savior".  I'll assume that was unintended.

Am I just a big 'ol freak because I think there is something inherently anti-Christian about the "Thank God that my children (who God gave me as a blessing) are OUT OF MY HOUSE!" sentiment?

I think I'm going to have to move to some "middle-of-nowhere" country location and hide in a cave.  Is there still room out there in Tennessee?

I was just on the homepage, and ran across your blog. I read the whole entry, and have to say, that incident IS shocking! While my faith is in Buddhism, I also listen to Christian radio up here in Michigan. I would have expected to hear "the greatest day" was the day God GAVE you your children (wether your sentiment on that issue is point of conception or date of birth is up to you *smile*)

You have every right to be shocked, and the shock has now spanned at least 2 different faiths, LOL! Peace, Love and good wishes!

I would just call it obnoxious and be done with it. You are SPOT ON with your annoyance. I love September because I get to really dig in and do some cool things with my kids. Honestly. You are a little freakish, but everyone on this blog is. Isn't that comforting?

concur. I aggrevated at times with friend's who see their children, marriage, etc through the world's eyes. I'm thinking...do you ever read the bible. Now understand I am not the reader/studier I should be, but come on... I believe God calls those children "BLESSINGS!" not a hinderance to our daily lives!

Amen, brother.

I read this post yesterday before schlepping out to buy groceries. My kids absolutely LOVE grocery shopping and by the time we were checking out, they were totally "into it" and more-or-less pinging off the walls (not in a disruptive way, but in a joyful way!)

I casually commented to the cashier about this (mostly to brag about how cute they were being!) and her response was: "I bet YOU sure can't wait for school to start, can you!"

Even having read your post, I was shocked anew by the comment. I smiled and told her we homeschool, but that even if we didn't, I'd miss my kids if they weren't around.

She looked down at her hands and just mumbled "Well, my daughter likes going to school".

I wasn't sure how to respond to that. After her comment, she looked like she was deep in thought, so I just paid and we went on our way, my kids still giggling and driving me nuts the entire way! :-)

I wouldn't give up those moments for anything!

Hey! I'm one happy mom when school starts up! it means I get to be with MY blesings all day and that the other neighborhood parents stop calling and asking if I'll be their kid's unpaid nanny. I dont mind filling in for emergencies, but if they'd get rid of a few horses maybe the mom wouldn't "HAVE" to work, and the kids wouldn't be home alone in the summer.

I agree with your stament... I don't see kids going off to school as being the most wonderful day of the year?hmm.... It saddens my heart to hear that specially from a Christian radio... why did not say we should pray for our kids at school so they will stand firm in their beliefs and for major protection against the enemy...???

I have been wondering something.... I think I might be a strange cookie... no not because of my picture on my blog).... But because I tend to believe it is good to teach our children the Bible... Begining to end literaly... but also strong accademics... I want my children to become professionals and make an impact in this world...

Not only show an example of a Christian, but really know God's word, that may be used for God's glory in the real world.... :) I believe Christians can be godly and smart too.... However, I don't seem to see a lot of that in some homeschool circles? they seem to be satisfied with little accademics? Did God limit our brains as Christians?.... hmm...

What do you think?..... ***Suzie****

You are not the only one who feels this way. Sometimes we Christians feel alone in our beliefs because the other side is much more vocal and they have the media to voice their opinions for them. Many Christians don't speak up for fear of reprocussions. Some because they are not sure how to voice their beliefs. That's why I am so passionate about teaching our youth communication skills.

I think I may have heard that same thing on the radio, I remember feeling shocked that a Christian station (one of my favorites) would behave like that. I guess one reason to be glad that school has started up is that at least someone is watching them for most of the day now. I've asked my husband if we can move to Tenn (abbreviated to avoid spelling errors, thank you public education!) a couple of times, there seem to be so many homeschoolers out there. But, he says that if we ever leave Texas, we're moving to California. CA is too liberal for me, so I guess we'll stay right here.

God Bless!
