Anyone Know A Quiet Alternative to Sweeping?

I know this sounds like an odd question.  But, consider the source...

In any case, our 7-year-old has the job of "getting junk off of the floor".  Sometimes, this is called "sweeping", however, you haven't seen this child's coordination.

So, until she grows into her final, graceful form, we've got her using one of those "stick vacs".

For those of you who haven't tried them (at least, the type that we use), they can be heard clear across town.  When she turns it on, animals in a 10 mile radius take shelter.  In other words, it's really loud.

So, I was wondering if anyone has discovered a hard-surface (wood / tile) floor cleaning device that might save all of our hearing.

Oh, yeah.  Cheaper is better, too!

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

What about a Swiffer duster or Swiffer mop?

The only thing that actually works for us and the kids have not wrecked yet is the swivel sweeper. We are tough on our stuff so I would buy the 2pack.

Those were the only options I came up with, too.

The problem, of course, is that they are (for sweeping) very expensive options. Use a new pad every time you sweep and, at about a buck a throw, you're looking are some costly stuff, especially if you sweep every day.

I'm still looking for a cheap option...

You can get cheap versions of Swiffers at dollar stores here in Canada-- I'm guessing probably in the States too... much more wallet-friendly than brand-name. Also try Wal-Mart.

Our only vaccuum thing is a Shop-Vac, which is nicely all-purpose, but louder than any stick vac. Break-the-sound-barrier loud.

Maybe start training to sweep with a more ligh-weight broom? or kiddie version?

using washcloths instead of the Swiffer brand cloths for the sweeper/duster? They'd be washable then and not a drain on the finances.

Jul. 22, 2009 - rubber broom or maybe an alternative

Posted by Anonymous
www.flylady.net has a rubber broom thing, that I haven't used, but I hear works really well. I've used the hand-held version and they work wonderfully. She also has swiffer-like mops that have a microfiber cloth that you can use wet or dry and use like a swiffer. This was being discontinued I believe, which brings me to what i use by way of that.... I have freecycled for peoples old swiffers. or you can buy a new starter kit for I think about 15 dollars. Then you can find your own microfiber clothes at places like cvs or the dollar store, and tuck them into the little grippy places on the swiffers. You can have the reusable kind for about 20 dollars. Which I think is about the price of FlyLady's as well.
