King Kong and Us

Sorry about the lack of posting for the last week.  I'd love to claim that I was extraordinarily busy or something, but I think my brain was taking a rest.

Okay, break time is over.

So, I saw King Kong this weekend.  When I first saw King Kong years and years ago, I got the basic tragedy, but I didn't really get it.  This latest one I saw with my eyes open I must recommend it for everyone, especially if you have children on the verge of man/womanhood.

Why?  Because the group of people that have written and re-written King Kong over the years have really understood the Biblical roles of men and women.  That is, the internal drives that God created us with.

In my humble opinion, that's why all the women in the audience (from "Gen Y" teens up to Grandma) were crying at the end.  And why everyone in the audience was drawn into the movie.

That is also why this is a great springboard to talk about men, women, love, unrequited love, and our basic needs and drives that we were created with.

THE BIG LESSONS OF KING KONG

Let me tell you some of the reflections of truth that I came away from King Kong with:

  • The basic desire that women have for their man (or a man that they're interested in) to be the King of at least his own jungle.  Men don't have to run the world, but women find a man attractive who is capable, driven, and is chasing a dream in his own niche in life.

This also explains why some women fall for the "bad boy".  He must be powerful because he defies every societal rule (and many legal ones) and gets away with it.  Unfortunately, some women never figure out that, like electricity, some power you want to steer clear of.
  • The disorienting effect that "the love of a good woman" has on even the most powerful of men.  It happens to the best of us.

This is also the reason that some girls (not the majority by any means - most don't really understand it) enjoy dressing skimpily and flirting with guys - it can be powerful.  Unfortunately for them, they can't control the effect that it has in the boys, which can turn ugly.
  • The draw for a man to save "a damsel in distress".  Most men feel the pull of the savior role (little "s") to protect women.  It is this role that has been confounded and bred out of our boys due to the "I don't need your help" nature of feminism.

Yes, I know that you Proverbs 31 women out there still find this attractive.  Pray for the young men of our country who are being trained up not to fulfill this role.  Your daughters (and mine) need their own savior (little "s") man.

The movie also accurately displays the different reactions that different men have to this pull.  All recognize the pull and some are scared by it and run away, some foolishly want to go kill something because of it, and Godly men respond to it by acting.

This is what pulls boys to go into the military, police, firefighter, and medical fields.  The pull on many of the men who go into these fields is so strong that they don't care that they aren't paid what they're worth.  And it is strong enough that the fact that a man is in one of these fields in itself is an attractant to many women.
  • The tragedy of the "civilizing effect" of women.  All women, once they have won their man, want to "civlize him" a little bit.  It is part of their nurturing role.  And, in itself, it's a good thing.

However, due to the Curse, many women try to turn their man into their best girlfriend.  And, tragically, many men let them because it is what they are told a good man does.  Of course, as soon as he is fully "civilized" in this way, the woman is no longer attracted to him and the man is lost in some strange jungle he doesn't know how to get out of.

In the end, the man becomes one of the walking dead or, in the case of King Kong, actually dies.  The woman can only watch in horror.  Moreso if she realizes what has actually happened.
  • That most 25-foot gorillas are kung-fu masters.  Okay, not really.  Although it seems that King Kong studied some martial arts when he's fighting three dinosaurs at a time, I was just seeing if you're paying attention.
So, there you have it.  The Cliff's...er...Confessor's Notes to King Kong as an exemplar of ancient drives put in us by the Creator.

I could be completely wrong about what I saw here, but King Kong is certainly a great conversation starter for teens.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

As I said, maybe I'm all wrong about this (it has happened before).  What did you learn from King Kong?  Where did I get it right?  What did I miss?

I haven't seen the movie yet. (all of our movie money has gone to Narnia. Repeatedly. My crew can't see it enough. They are still begging to go. Again.) Anyway, I haven't seen the new King Kong. I saw the original about 150 years ago. So, I can't comment on how your statements apply to the movie, but I can say "Amen!" to the comments themselves. So...

Amen!!
