Communism / Nazism and Narcing
I know my history may be little fuzzy here, but I'll try to keep it right
Way back yonder, before we knew better, I recall us being horrified Russian / Soviet Communists and German Nazis for training and encouraging their citizens to report any Party Infractions to their local government official.
The Soviets had a Party Aparatchik that they could conveniently report offenders who did or said something wrong for "re-education". The Nazis had the JG (Jugend Gerade - Youth Brigade) where they trained elementary school and high school age kids how to be a good Nazi. And be sure to tell us if your parents are spouting any anti-Nazi propaganda.
That was terrible! Good thing we lived in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave! None of that nonsense here in the USA! We even had names for those people (stool pidgeon, canary, narc) and parents taught their kids that "nobody likes a tattletale".
WELCOME TO THE FEDERALIST SOVIET STATES OF AMERIKA
So, here we are in a freshly minted year (2006, for those of you not paying attention). As I look around, I think to myself, "Am I in Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia?"
Here's a short list of people / groups encouraging me to report my fellow citizen:
- The Texas Department of Transportation encourages me to report polluting cars.
- The Texas Department of Transportation encourages me to report litterers.
- The Texas Department of Public Safety encourages me to report people running red lights.
- The IRS encourages (and rewards) me to report tax cheats.
- The BSA encourages (and rewards) me to report companies violating software licensing agreements.
- The Toll Road Authorities encourage me to report people riding in High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes who don't have the requisite number of people in the car.
- The Lower Colorado River Authority encourages me to report polluting boats.
- My local school district is encouraging the kids to report kids bringing drugs, guns, knives, anything sharp-ish, or bullying to the principal.
None of these, for the record, has anything to do with reporting terrorist-related activities or war. Just everyday infractions by my fellow citizens that I should tell my benevolent government about.
Ummmm....where do I live again?
