A Good Intermediate Bible

My oldest daughter (who is 7) is also a reading maniac.  Since she got the whole "blending" thing at about age 5, she has read up everything she could get her hands on.

Ordinarily, that would be a good thing.

However, she has breezed her way through 2 or 3 children's Bibles and we need something more challenging for her, but not too challenging.

As a result, I'm consulting my Curriculim Advisory Board (that's you!) to see what you've seen.

Basically, she could read (as far as mechanics go) a regular, adult Bible, but the language is too high level for her.  But the average children's bible is way too simplistic.

Does anyone know of a text-dense Bible written at a younger audience?

Thanks in advance!

Feb. 23, 2006 - English Standard Version

We were recently introduced to the English Standard Version and absolutely love it. It read well, and is very accurate, as well as being easy to understand. My daughter (9) loves it as does my middle son (6). You can read sample texts online as www.esv.org

Well, since you asked. I really believe in not dumbing down learning and so I think a full adult bible for a child is appropriate. My kids who are in Awana (as you know) learn the NKJV verses. I also use the NKJV bible and love it. I have heard of the ESV and it sounds ok but it is pretty new from what I understand and I wouldn't use it as a personal study bible. I've got it in my head that it isn't as accurate. Oh this bible version preference is so personal it is hard to recommend. I think the important thing is to expect that your child who can read so well is capable of reading a regular adult bible. Let her get used to the fantastic language that it is written in. I personally hate childrens bibles. My kids don't use them at all. I've tried the NIVjr and don't like it. For one thing the verses are cut short and are not complete. I won't have my children memorizing out of that bible. OH- bother! You asked! Let us know what you decide! You always ask these questions and I am always left wondering if you take any advice that is given. It would be good to hear what you come up with. Oh ya, an example of a friends child (8) who is a great reader too reads the adult bible, compeltely understands what he reads and basically preaches a sermon and my friend has to say "oh, wow," and then checks to make sure he is right. And he is. They are so capable of more than we give them credit for.

Feb. 24, 2006 - Asking for Advice

Posted by Confessor
I guess I should do follow-ups for all of the advice that I ask for.

The truth of the matter is that, when I do ask for your advice, I usually follow at least a combination of it - sort of a line-item-veto on advice...

I asked a long time ago about books and have been getting a bunch of them for my kids.

I'm sure that I'll try out at least a couple suggestions here (including a "regular" / adult Bible and see how that works out).

As always, I appreciate your help and advice!

For simple reading I really suggest the Message (though it's a PARAPHRASE NOT A TRANSLATION) (*ahem* sorry, Moody Bible Institute training coming out there)

But I love reading it for simply reading it.... it's fresh, it's new, and it's highly enjoyable to read.
