Oddfellows Playhouse in Middletown has designed a new theatre arts program especially for home schoolers. Join the fun to learn some new skills, make new friends, or fill the gaps in your drama knowledge. Classes will be taught by professionals.
At this time, three sessions are being offered: Mime Technique, Putting on the Mime (a construction and performance of mime shows), and Stage Combat. Another class or two may be offered later.
The cost at this time depends on the number of people who sign up. It could be slightly higher or lower than the estimates listed below.

Mime Techniqueanuary 25

Learn the language of silence! Mime is an art form that transcends all ages, and ethnicities. Through stylized gestures, learn to transport yourself and others into entire worlds of imagination. This class will cover an introduction to mime technique: body control, illusions, rhythms, characters, the robot, and more...

Putting on the Mime: Session Two: 10 weeks (March-May 2007)
Thursdays from 1:00p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (approximately $100 per participant)

Using skills from previous class, we will develop an ensemble mime performance that is portable around a theme determined by the class; culminating in a public performance, with preference for an outdoor venue. Focus will be on small group, or individual performances. Instruction on how to build a theme, convey a message, do street performance incorporating stories, clowning etc.
Instructor:
Daniel Cossette is a graduate of Mimeistry International, the only full-time professional mime university in the world. He was trained in the French style of mime (popularized by Marcel Marceau) by Master mimes Dr. Todd and Marilyn Farley, achieving the level Performance Journeyman. He toured nationally and internationally with Mime istry for two years, both teaching and performing. He then returned to his home state, Connecticut, to found the Ambassador Arts organization, and is teaching and performing as a soloist based out of Connecticut. He continues to lead professional performing arts troupes on national tours, as well as teaching and training. Dan desires to see young people raised up in the dramatic arts, and is heading up a local drama team.
A smattering of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, and karate also make their way into his shows.
Stage Combat: Thursdays from 1:00p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (approximately $100 per participant); 6 Weeks (Feb.-March 2007)

For ages 12-17
Class Objective: Learn the basic skills and techniques for stage combat, from basic hand-to-hand to basic broad sword technique.

Jeffery Allen is the new artistic director of Oddfellows Playhouse in Middletown. Prior to moving to CT, he served as the Director of Education for Cleveland Public Theatre, Northeast Ohio 's leading alternative theatre. He also spent four seasons at Great Lakes Theater Festival, Cleveland's only professional classic stage company in the nationally recognized Education Outreach program, and on the main stage under the direction of Gerald Freedman and James Bundy. Jeffery is a proud member of the Lincoln Center Theatre's Directors Lab and Actors' Equity Association, and regularly directs and performs in the stage and commercial industry.
