THE GREEN STREET ARTS CENTER AND THE NORTH END ACTION TEAM PRESENT
ARTS IN THE GARDEN
A WEEKLY SERIES OF FREE ARTS WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS & FAMILIES
---
Middletown, Conn, July 5, 2007--Each summer, the Green Street Arts Center and the North End Action Team join forces to provide free, family-friendly arts workshops in a garden setting. Following tradition, this summer kicks off with a creative scarecrow-building workshop led by artist and Hay House resident David Brown. Following the workshop at Green Street, the scarecrows will be delivered to Erin St. to spruce up NEAT's community garden.
Weekly Arts in the Garden workshops will take place on Wednesdays, July 11-August 8 from 5:30-6:30pm in the Mary Susan Gawlak Memorial Garden at Green Street. Light refreshments will be served. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
In the event of rain, Arts in the Garden will be moved indoors. The Green Street Arts Center is located at 51 Green Street in Middletown. For more information, contact the Green Street Arts Center (860-685-7871; www.greenstreetartscenter.org) or the North End Action Team (860-346-4845; www.neatmiddletown.org).
The schedule is a follows:

o July 18: Environmental Sculpture with Natasha Miles
o July 25: African Masks and Music with Lance Kamau James
o August 1: Found Object Printmaking with Scott Kessel
o August 8: "Charming" Jewelry Making with Jackie Bright
The Green Street Arts Center, now in its third year of programming, was created to serve as both an anchor to the revitalization of the North End and as a unique artistic and educational resource for residents of the neighborhood and the region. It is the result of a major collaboration between Wesleyan University, the North End Action Team (NEAT), the City of Middletown and other community and arts partners. A $1.5 million renovation to the former school at 51 Green Street was completed in January 2005, after which the GSAC moved into its permanent home in Middletown's North End. The facility offers a fully-equipped sound/recording, videography, digital photography, writing and graphic arts lab. It also features two visual arts studios for drawing, painting and sculpture, a dance studio and a performance studio with seating capacity of 100.
The North End Action Team (NEAT) is a neighborhood organization that began in l997 to develop grassroots leadership in the North End of Middletown. NEAT is made up of residents, business leaders, property owners, and stakeholder groups. NEAT's mission is to provide neighborhood-based participation and leadership, to identify concerns, define strategies, and develop resources to improve the quality of life in the North End. By raising a collective neighborhood voice, the North End can bring about positive change. |
