Homeschool Gym Classes at Wallingford Park & Rec

From Katrina:

YESTERDAY:
I had a meeting this morning with the Wallingford Parks and Rec Director and his assistant about setting up homeschoolers' gym/sports classes there.
It was a great meeting and we are moving forward with this. They asked me a ton of questions and tried to gather as much information as possible.

  • This is going to be organized by age and department run by hired instructors
  • There will a fee for each class.
  •  The classes will probably run and be paid for in 8 week sessions.
They asked that I be the contact person for this so I can just give them the information all together--there isn't anyone there who has any current info to give out, nor to collect it.
So, please at this stage, do not call the Rec Ctr and ask--this is an awesome thing that they are doing--and I'm sure we would all prefer that it go smoothly and we begin with a good reputation.
I have nothing to gain in doing this, except to have a low-cost gym class for my own children.

The Rec Ctr is going to see what instructors they can find, what type of classes they will run whether it be open gym/taekwondo/
variety of sports etc and what day and time those instructors can facilitate the classes. Once they get that information and put the classes together--I will announce it.

Normally, this would be put in their catalog, but that's already been printed and sent out. In the future, if this all works out, the classes will be listed in their catalog just like all their other offerings. Wallingford residents do take priority, but I don't think that will be an issue with this, since there aren't too many Wallingford homeschoolers!

The cost will be quite low--ranging anywhere from $15-$40 per 8 week session. It all depends on how many children are signed up. The more children, the lower the cost per person.

If you are interested in signing your child up for a gym class...please email me off list. katrina@core-id.com
Put "GYM CLASSES" in the subject line please.
Please tell me the ages of your children that you would like to sign up for the class.
This may begin soon or if there isn't enough interest--a new session would begin in January. It depends how it all plays out.

Kindest Regards,
Katrina

This is from a CT Homeschool mom:
HELLO HOMESCHOOLERS:  THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN FITNESS PLEASE EMAIL DR. JAMES RAUSCHENBACH    ASAP!!   PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO OTHERS.---THANKS

From: James Rauschenbach rauschenbaj1@southernct.edu
Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 12:34:38 PM
Subject: SCSU fitness testing for homeschoolers

Hi Colleen: Last year I offered a fitness testing day and a fitness
challenges day for home schoolers in the area. We had a good response
and so I wolud like to do this again for a new group of my students.
The lessons would be open to 9 to 18 year old home school students. The
sessions will be from 8:15 to 9:55 am on Monday October 13th for the
testing and Monday November 10th for the challenges. I need at least 24
students to do this well. Hopefully there is enough interest. I was
hoping you might be able to help me spread the word about this
opportunity. Thanks!

Southern CT State U Offers Phys. Ed. Classes for Homeschoolers for FREE!

Hello all... below you will find an email that was sent from the director of the Physical Education Dept. at SCSU, offering free physical education classes for homeschool students.  I know several families that have participated and all have loved it.

Have a great day!

******************

Dear Parents!

I hope you have had a great winter - spring is on its way! As we are getting into our new semester, I wanted to contact you to offer another semester of the SCSU Home School Physical Education Program.

The elementary class will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:10-9am and 10:10-11am from April 16th – April 30th. As you can see, there is a gap of time between the classes so we will be offering a movement foundations class from 9:10-10am. For planning purposes for our future physical education teachers, we ask that you register your students for both the 8:10 and 10:10 classes and once you have registered you try to attend as often as possible. We certainly understand illnesses and other commitments that may prevent you from attending every day, but we would appreciate your children’s attendance as often as possible.

The secondary class will also be offered again this semester. This class will be offered on the following dates: March 7, 14, 28, April 4, 16, 18, and May 7 & 9. The activities that will be taught in these classes consist of Tactical Game Play, Archery and Orienteering (mapping and compass work).  This course meets form 12:10 – 1pm. We had many middle school-aged students last semester and highly encourage all high school-aged students to attend as well.

The elementary class is open to children ages 5-10. We will be split into two groups based on age (5-7 year olds and 8-10 year olds). The activities we teach will be developmentally appropriate for students in those age groups. The secondary class is open to children ages 11-18.

For our records, please reply to Dr. Daniel Swartz for the elementary and movement foundations classes at swartzd1@southernct.edu  OR Dr. Jim Rauschenbach for the middle and high school classes at rauschenbaj1@southernct.edu.

In addition, please feel free to pass this information on to other families who have children who are home-schooled. If you or they require any further information, please feel free to e-mail me at swartzd1@southernct.edu.

Thank you,

Daniel Swartz, Ph.D.

Next year, we have two Kids on the Wharf performances: The Very Hungry Caterpillar in March and Rip Van Winkle in April. We are also offering a family subscription that includes Black Nativity, a new play by local playwright Donald Marguilies called Shipwrecked!in Feb and March, and an adaptation of the musical Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein in May. Monthly Meetings for Homeschoolers in North Branford, CT

Hi!
I'm the new children's librarian at the Atwater Library in North Branford.  In the fall I'd like to start a monthly meeting for homeschoolers.  I am very open to all ideas if you would spread the word.  I'm thinking of having a monthly meeting (maybe lunch and discussion) with speakers and people of interest to homeschoolers.  This may mean that sometimes it will be more interesting for older kids and sometimes for younger.  I'm also looking for people to volunteer for 6 week sessions to teach basic foreign languages to children (homeschoolers or not).  I have an interest in homeschooling because I homeschooled two of my kids until high school.  My youngest in now 18 and in college.
Thank you,
Donna Cann
