Our Life in the Country

So Sleepy

It is late and I'm very tired, but I just wanted to blog. We are looking into adding goats, chickens and maybe a horse to our mini-farm. We have the barn, the cats, and the dogs - but that's about it for being ready. I've been up late surfing to find out more, but I can't narrow it down. I have no idea what types of hens to get and what breed of goats. The horse/pony/donkey will be whatever we find that's compatible with our family.

I'm signing off to get some much needed sleep. It's been therapeutic to blog for a moment.

Good night!

Julie

Another day in the country

Last night I read Jeannie Fulbright's email newsletter about writing. It was inspiring. She suggested blogging so I decided to check mine again. It's been quite a while since I was last here.

So much has happened including my fall resulting in two sprained ankles and a hairline fracture above my right ankle. I was hobbling and in pain. It gave me a new appreciation for those with canes and crutches for long periods of time. When I was hobbling with my cane and two air casts I was treated with respect at stores. Folks would hold doors open for me. Now that they're gone (even though my pain is still there somewhat) I'm treated like I used to be. Just like a regular person. I remember feeling appreciative to those who did hold doors open and so forth. I made a promise to myself that I would treat others with respect no matter how it appeared they were feeling. It's still a nice little lift when there is nothing physically wrong to be treated kindly. There are folks who are in pain emotionally and spiritually that doesn't show on the outside that need to have a little uplift. The little gesture here and there can make someone's day.

Have a terrific day,

Here's opening your door for you,

Julie

A Day in the Country

I’ve noticed over the past few days that my piles of clean (thank goodness!) laundry have grown. I have gotten behind on folding, putting away and ironing. I also needed to catch up on a few loads of washing. Things were going along pretty well. It was going like clock work.

I let our dogs out and thought how nice it was that I can now trust them to not run off and they can stay out for more than 3.5 minutes. About 15 minutes later I asked on of the kids to call them. They called. The dogs came – in their usual order: first the schnauzer and then the shepherd. What was not in order was the blood covered Schnauzer! She was covered from the tip of her nose to half way down her back. The kids and I were initially wondering what got her until we noticed, about 30 seconds later, that she didn’t appear to be hurt.

Here is where it STARTS to become disgusting. (You have been warned…:/)

We shooed her out into the garage while I summoned “Sophie the German Shepherd” to take me outside and show me what happened. She took me in (what I later found out) was reverse chronological order of the scene of the ‘crime.’ First she led me through the deck gateway into the garden area to the first bloody spot, then a trail – around the other gate to the other side of the fence to the next bloody spot… then a trail. To the NEXT spot we went which was at the bottom of the sliding board… then a trail.  You get the picture. After a couple more spots and trails we ended up at a spot where Sophie had been digging a couple days ago. There was a perfect round hole about 18 inches deep that went down to what appeared to be some type of den. There was an exit and an entrance. I’ve read that Schnauzers will burrow to catch their prey. I now believe it.

During this little escapade through the back yard and into the field, I discover that Sophie’s lip is bleeding. SO she joins her little friend, Missy the Hunting Schnauzer, in the garage. I’ve still not located the victim at this point.

When I arrived back in the house, I filled in my oldest, The Textbook King, about the goings-on in the yard. I informed him that I didn’t see the animal in question. He looked out the back door and said, “You mean that one?”  As I remember to close my dropped jaw, I walk outside in my shorts and slippers to investigate. This was a weird looking animal… resembling a possum with a 1-inch wide flat tail that was about 8 inches long. YUK!  He was definitely not a live animal at this point.

I called dh to tell him about how much FUN I was having with HIS dogs! They’re always his when they’re trouble-makers. They’re mine when they are cute and cuddly. J  He suggested the dog wash that adjoins the Laundromat in a nearby tiny horse-and-buggy town. I decided to wait until he got home so he could have the pleasure of being with HIS dogs.

Gross-warning:

Just before he arrived home we noticed that the Hunting Schnauzer was mostly back to her normal salt & pepper color. Hmm… we were getting the dogs ready to load to go to the Dog Wash when I started noticing patches of blood throughout the garage. (I had decided I would go ahead and take them myself to save dh the trouble.) Dh arrived home as I was cleaning up around the garage. Dd gasped and told us that Sophie’s tongue is really red! YUK! She cleaned up her little friend.

We decided all the kids could stay home. The Textbook King is 19 so all was well.

Dh and I arrived at the PetsPaw, fed the machine lots of quarters, washed, disinfected, rinsed, and blow-dried the pooches in a very nice dog wash. They were happy. While we were there we decided to rinse out Sophie’s mouth as well.

Since we took the dogs over there in a crate, dh decided to rinse out the crate at the car wash across the street. He and Sophie walked. Missy and I drove. We fed THAT machine more quarters, washed and rinsed the crate, washed and rinsed the car, and rinsed Sophie’s mouth yet again. Oh, and we drove there in an ice storm! It was snowing on our way home. I wondered if my will was up to date.

What a relief it was to come home. Everything was fine here. We were home just a few minutes when I noticed little droplets of the red again! We found that Sophie’s nose was scuffed up a little. After antibiotic cream was applied she seemed to be a happy clean Shepherd.

A day in the country,

In His grip,

Julie

Snowscape

It is a beautiful snowy day here. We got 8 inches of snow in about 6 hours last night. The kids are playing outside in it and having a grand time. Our dogs are playing hard, too. Our outdoor cats (all our cats are outdoor cats) are not fond of this cold, snowy weather. I suppose they are wimpy barn cats as barn cats go. :)

I can't imagine not having our seasons change. We go to extremes here. We have hot summer and cold, snowy winters. Autumns are beautiful. But now we are covered in white fluffy snow.

I ordered a couple of little advent gifts for my younger children just after advent began (not a perfect time to order...). They were scheduled to arrive yesterday via UPS. Since we had such a snow storm we didn't get our delivery! :( However, dh is being a prince and picking it up for us before he comes home tonight. He'll have to go out of his way to do it, but what a gift that is. I won't have to fight the driveway's drifts.

See you soon,

Julie

It's Been A LONG While

Oh My! I just looked at my blog and couldn't believe it's been that long since I've posted and started this! I'm so glad to be here.

I'm having a wonderful time homeschooling my 2 remaining kiddos. We all love homeschooling. It's a blessing to do it. It's great this time of year (any time really) to be able to take the time off and get to do some Christmas preparations without getting too awfully frazzled.

I suppose I should sign off for now and see what's going on in the rest of TOS.

Julie

Times of Challenge

We have had a couple weeks of challenges in our family. I'm hoping and praying that we are on the up-swing. It's good to be here on homeschool blogger and I'll have to actually do this entry better tomorrow when my brain is a little less foggy.

Toasty and Warm!

I can tell I'm getting older now that I make my font REALLY BIG!  It is  hot and toasty day outside and it's becoming that in the house, too. Our AC is on the blink and it's warming up inside. I'm about to go out and take a drive in my car to cool off. I'm just thankful that I'm not outside helping to get the AC working again. I'll be dh is happy I'm not 'helping' either. :)

Stay cool!

Julie

Happy Birthday!

Now that it's officially my oldest son's birthday, he has permitted me to tell him yet again about his birth! I won't share all the details here, but I just have to say that I cannot believe it's been 19 - count 'em - 19 years since he was born. He may have aged 19 years, but of course, I have not.   Let me tell you also, that in case you don't remember, the summer of 1986 was a very hot one. I may have had my opinion askewed since I was great with child, but I still remember it being overly warm!

It sounds like the other kiddos are getting restless. I better go and round them in.

Take care,

Julie

Personal Retreat

I am happy to be going on a Personal Retreat this weekend.  I'm leaving as soon as I post this entry. I have my priorities straight, dont I?

I'm going to work on my crochet projects for Project Linus while watching a couple DVDs from the library, work on my laptop  while teaching myself a bit of html, reading, praying, journaling, working on lesson plans and just generally being quiet. I can't wait for the quiet. I know when I get there, I'll be so homesick for the sounds of my children, husband, dogs, cats, and the little cockatiel, but for now I do need the quiet.

This was a suggestion from my husband. Now that can be taken for more than one way, but I choose to think he knows I need a time away.

See you later!

Julie

July 29

Again, I am so glad to be here tonight. I am so thankful for this community of homeschool bloggers. What a nice thing that TOS has offered us. I am blessed to be a part of this.

I am getting away on a personal retreat for the rest of the weekend. Tomorrow morning I will be driving to my folks' house about 30 minutes away. They're out of town. The house will be very quiet. I plan to read, work on lesson plans, work on my new business website, and most importantly, listen to the Lord. I've been too far away from Him lately. I've just not taken the time to be with Him like I should. It will be a refreshment.

Well, I really do need to get some shut-eye. I've been awake too long today!

Nighty-night,

Julie

July 28, 2005

I am so glad to be here tonight. I was thrilled to get my second issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine yesterday. I've been devouring it as I've stolen a few moments here and there. It was fun and exciting to read the article on homeschoolblogger! I love this blogger site! Thanks Old Schoolhouse!

For the past couple days, I've been working on getting my new business website up and running. I am now at the point where I want to give up the store and throw my computer through the window!  It's not been a pretty picture. I finally decided that I really do need to have the weekend at the Christian Mother/Daughter camp and refresh. So that's what my little girl and I are doing. Life's too short to mess with banging my head against the wall too much!

And speaking of life being too short - time flying - I'm having a birthday tomorrow. My mom and dad gave me a surprise cake today , not that I needed it - I certainly don't - but it was nice that they did it.

Well, off to get a few chores done  before bed. I must get something constructive done today! :)

Good night, fellow homeschoolers.

Julie

4H Season

We are having fun with our 4H projects this week. My dd won a red ribbon for cake decorating and a blue ribbon along with Reserve Champion for her sewing project. Her sewing project was a hanging pocket organizer. It turned out very nice! This is her first year in these projects. Sewing judging was nice. We saw a lot of our local homeschool friends.

Her dog obedience show/competition is this Friday. That will be a lot of fun. The kids sure have worked hard with their dogs.

I edit/write our homeschool group's newsletter. My second year is starting soon. Last year, I made it mostly announcements. This year I'd like to add a little "homeschool news" and tidbits, maybe a survey or two, to make it a bit cozier and friendlier. If anyone has any ideas, please pass them on! I would love to hear your ideas.

See you soon,

Julie

July 1

I cannot believe it is already July 1! Where is the summer going? My children and I just got home from a 3 day trip to Chicago where it was very hot and no rain in sight. From the looks of lawns they've been without rain for quite some time. Brown grass is not attractive.

We saw the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. Elsewhere I've mentioned that the Field Museum screams evolution so we were disappointed there. We loved Shedd and Museum of Science and Industry. We felt the Museum of Science and Industry was where we got the most for our dollar.

I'm closing for now. I've got to get caught up on some laundry and paying those awful bills.

Julie

I am so excited to have found homeschoolblogger.com! I receive Cindy Rushton's e-newsletter; that's where I found out about this. I don't have a lot of time to post right now. I just wanted to say hello!

I Love Blogging

I Love Blogging

Today a couple of my kids and I planted our butterfly garden. I took a few pictures and I hope I can figure out how to upload them. We had a grand time. They are so much help for me. I'm trying to get used to having help like this.

I don't know who started this webblog site (was it TOS?), but I so appreciate it. It's a nice place for us homeschoolers to get together!
