Creative Homeschooling is...Thinking Out-of-the-Box!

Mar. 29, 2006

Appearances are often deceiving!

When I tell people my husband is a chef, I usually get the typical response,  "Oh, you must be eating gourmet meals all the time!". You might assume that we had something like Pan Seared Halibut Puttanesca or Filet Mignon with a Loganberry sauce for dinner last night. You know what we really had? Boxed Mac and Cheese with french fries and yes, dh even ate it!! Now don't get me wrong, we are not in the habit of eating processed food for dinner but do have it occasionally and we almost never have anything that is "gourmet" as the family chef rarely cooks at home. Some of our friends and acquaintances have said, they wanted to invite us to dinner but are too self-conscious to cook for my husband. I'm like, "He eats mac and Cheese and likes it, ok?!?!?"
What's my point? How many opportunities of fellowshipping with others do we miss out on from our assumptions. I have been guilty myself of this, assuming that I would not click or like someone simply because we go to different churches or our dress is different. In Black and Whites Blog CLICK illustrates a great picture of what assumptions about people can cause.

It's an area I know that I need to work on....how about you?

**Just wanted to announce that my business partner, Dena just posted her review of Preschool Activity Bags. We recently started selling this book on our sites and can't seem to keep it in stock!**

Lol. Yep, I need some work in that area. I think people don't invite us because I have a big mouth. ;-)

What a great post!

And y'all can come over to my house for dinner anytime! :-) It won't be gourmet but should be tasty if I have enough notice. If not, we can order pizza and eat brownies and drink coffee/tea while the kiddos play.

Love,
Marsha

PS You wouldn't by chance live in the Houston area, would you???

Mar. 29, 2006 - How True!

I popped in to see what was new and read this recent blog post. How true it is! Light brings light, in my opinion... just as stinkin' thinkin' brings stinky results. *smile*

Thanks for pointing to that post. That was great!

(And your hubby makes some mean collard greens!) And you're a great cook, too!

But that's not the point, was it? Great point, btw.

Mar. 29, 2006 - Hey, Jennie...I can relate!

Posted by
Ever since I was young, my mother had told me she never wanted a card from my unless I had illustrated it myself. She was always encouraging me to send cards to the relatives that I'd painted, sketched with pen and ink, whatever. This went on well into my adult life, and while I was a younger wife and mom (or at least with more time on my hands), Christmas cards were still a creative endeavor and fun to make unique...for a while. Eventually busy demands eeked out whatever time I had to be creative like that and I found myself never sending out any cards anymore. Even the Christmas cards became a no-show, as I knew everyone was expecting to see what creation I came up with this year. In doing so, "no cards" has meant no contact with relatives and friends. A sad fact, but true. And even so, an overwhelming guilt arises when I reach for a box of store-bought cards--as if I'm letting down both Mom, my relatives, and friends! What a catch-22. One of these days I'll just have to "get over it" and buy those cards, just to get the contact with everyone back once again. After all, what is REALLY important? :-)

Mar. 30, 2006 - WOW!!

Oooo! You are so right! My husband and I began attending an Apostolic Christian Church two years ago --
As members, the women do not wear make-up, they wear their hair in a bun (or something similar), they wear long dresses or skirts.... the men do not wear shorts in the summer, they wear suits to church every Sunday and Wednesday evening (even if they work late and have to get into their suit without eating a bite of supper), they don't have any facial hair.... the members are of a more modest lifestyle and are comfortable with that. Anyway.... Because we owned a business, my husband was called to work for the church and spent some time in their services. Of course, we would think that there was NO WAY we could attend such a church -- I mean... NO make-up?? NO overall jeans?? Well, after sitting through many services, my husband asked me to go with him. (*SHOCK!*) I blew him off for a couple of weeks. I knew some of the ladies who were members of the church -- nice girls, but... it just wasn't for me. Finally, when the excuses ran out, I went to church with him. And.... I had never been to such a warm and welcoming place in my entire life!! Two years later.... I am a member of the no-make-up, hair in a bun, dress wearing Apostolic Christian Church!! And... I have never been more content with myself or my family.
This... from a Baptist, Evangelical, Lutheran church attending girl from Minneapolis.
I wonder if people look at me now and think, "Look at that dress wearing, bun in the hair having, no make-up on lady! There is NO WAY I could attend HER church!!" Hmmm.....
Blessings!! ~Beckie

My dh is not chef...but he cooks MUCH better than I do! And yet he never complains when my cooking is not up to what he himself could do. :o)
I understand what you mean about making assumptions, though...I do it too. I'll have to pay more attention to that.

Oh how funny!

You know I hear a lot that people are afraid to come talk to me because I teach communication skills. Many are intimidated by my degree.

I find it amusing that little old me would be intimidating! LOL I am 5' nuthin' and I am certainly not the Grammar Police. In fact, one of the ideas I teach in my studies is that it doesn't always serve a purpose to correct someone. I know this intimately as my children are President and Vice President of the Conversation CorRection Patrol!

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I just read your profile about your husband being a chef and that was the first question I was going to ask! Ha, Ha! I DO assume a lot about people and it really makes building a relationship alot more complicated. Thanks for the reminder.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head with this one. I am extremely guilty of this. I even stopped going to Sunday services because I had gained so much weight and was afraid what people would say/think (btw, I'm going back to services on Easter...I think it's fitting). I often decline invitations or even avoid getting any altogether because I don't feel like I measure up. Just imagine how much my kids and I have missed out on.

Thank you for your comments today. You made me so hungry ;). I will definitely try your quesadilla recipe!! Don't worry, I didn't throw out the scale; just the battery to it....hahaha

Mar. 30, 2006 - Hi, Jennie! Yes, it's me!

Let's see if the avatar shows up this time--for some reason my post below came up looking somewhat "anonymous." Go figure! :-)

In response to your post on my blog, yep, that's me! I was on Vegsource a few years ago, when the business began (2002-3). No time for posting anymore, and periodically other vendors who carried our timeline materials started posting there, so we left it for them. :-) Didn't you and I also speak on the phone for a while way back then? I remember when you folks started out there, too! What a blessing how much our businesses have grown, now.

We're absolutely thrilled with your product, too! One of my sons has difficulty with focusing and committing to memory his studies (academic lessons stick to him like an old, used post-it. He's much more the creative, "right-brained" child). The Times-Tales have been a great resource for getting the math facts to stick better!

...and I really like the new logo, too! Great job! :-)

I like that! Have to be reminded of that sometimes. I make assumptions, as well. I forget, however, that people prol'y make assumptions about me, whether it's about being a Christian, being a homeschooler, being a woman, staying at home, or just how a dressed the other day (forgetting that my socks have little monkeys on them and they are red, when my shirt is pink!). Thanks for the reminder...

by the way, do you ever have any of those dishes that your hubby prepares? I was impressed with some of those "titles" on the menu!

To answer Preschoolmommy's Question:

Thank you for the nice things you said about my dh. To answer your question, Yes, I have had several of the things he has made but NOT at home, only by going to the restaurants he has been over and eaten there. Funny thing is, HE is not the one who prepares it as I am usually eating with him. However, they are his recipes/creations that others are duplicating. Making gourmet food at home can be quite expensive as much of the stuff you can't find in a normal store.
However, a few days ago, he came home with a buffet of high end desserts (like pot'o cream, chocolate mousse, poached pears, etc) which I ate way too much of. That was only because he taught a gourmet baking class, though.

Apr. 1, 2006 - My assumption...

Posted by Altomommy
Sometimes, I will be invited to go somewhere - like to a friends house for a prayer meeting - and I won't go, not because I don't want to, but because I assume her children are better behaved than mine. :( Sad, huh? It doesn't help that there ARE people out there who look down on you if your children don't act perfectly.. and there is even more of a stigma in homeschooling circles that your children need to behave a certain way. It's not that I don't train and teach my children - I do... but they are still children who are sinners and sometimes I just would rather stay home than go somewhere and worry about how my children are acting.

Another assumption I tend to make is that everyone else has things more "together" than I do... LOL

Great post! You've given me much to think about... and take to the Lord in prayer!

Blessings
