Creative Homeschooling is...Thinking Out-of-the-Box!

The Pioneer Spirit!

As our society  becomes more technologically advanced the pioneer spirit is becoming a thing of the past. What's my definition of a pioneer spirit? It's an attitude of being self sufficient and a willingness to try new things...even if it means getting out of our comfort zone! What I especially respect about the pioneers was, they didn't let a little thing like, lack of knowledge stop them!  Where they were weak in experience  they were strong  in utilizing  critical thinking skills. This, mixed with the gumption to try, proved to be the success of many and even what sustained their lives.

What got me thinking , is  my mother sometimes refers to me as a "pioneer woman". She calls me that whenever I tell her the latest harebrained project I've tried, even though I  had no idea what I was doing. She'll say things like, "you did electrical rewiring!... how'd you know how to do that?".  I can remember almost the day my brain switched to "pioneer thinking." It was several years ago when I worked out in an Alaskan Wilderness Lodge. One of the employees  had to tape  her broken glasses until she could get into town to have them repaired. My very good  friend there (who was my pioneer spirit mentor) fixed them with a soldering tool. I was floored that she knew how to use a soldering tool, especially to fix glasses. She said, she didn't....but that didn't stop her from trying. Just hearing that gave me confidence to try things outside my range of experience

You would be amazed at how many projects and household repairs you can do yourself....if you just give it a try! The internet is a great place to start on the information you need. Having some basic knowledge, common sense and fortitude, is a good start in the right direction to being a modern day pioneer. Think of how our world might be changed someday if we all raised pioneer minded children.

Here is an example of sewing project I did in spite of not knowing how to  sew clothes. These costumes were made from ordinary clothing, bed ruffles and curtains that I retrieved from a thrift shop. I just cut and sewed where I thought they would look good! It wasn't perfect and probably not done "right" but it turned out good enough to win grand prize in a parade!  All four costumes cost me under $20 with the exception of the colonial hats which I got off the internet (but not before I TRIED without much success to make my own!).

I remember you turning a pair of jeans into a skirt clear back when I was in college! (Again, no patterns or instructions - just doing it!)

I am totally impressed! Yeah for you winning your prize! Those outfits are awesome. Okay, you've got me thinking about trying things outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes I do and sometimes I'm afraid to because I might ruin it -- for example, doing something myself rather than waiting for dh to do it and messing it up and therefore creating much more work for him! However, I'm going to have a new attitude and try to find something to get me out of my comfort zone today...I'll start by getting out of my pajamas!

That is the place were we ALL thrive and grow and learn. I, too, admire the pioneering spirit found in the early Americans. I love to try new things, which makes my dh a bit nervous as times since I usually find some way to drag him into the project.

I love all your creative ideas! I just ordered your Times Tales from Cindy Rushton's Spring Sale and can't wait to use it. You are a wonderful seamstress...I wish I could sew...I saw a sign today that fits me perfectly...I'm "domestically disabled." Thanks for all your encouraging comments on my blog...Love, Vicki

That is great! Gave this Mama (who isn't a seamstress) the go-ahead to do things like that. We all need to be told- or reminded! that though we may do things differently and not in the "proper" way, that we can still achieve the results. I am inspired! I need to go and make a pirates hat or a cowboy costume for my son!
I CAN DO IT!
:)
Thanks!

That is TOO cute and so inventive!! I too have tried my hand at sewing without knowing how, I made capes for Christmas gifts to go along with Star Wars, Princesses and Narnia. It is so fun to create something and see it turn out good. However, I also have a grand dress idea for me that turned out sideways...laughing. I may have to try your idea....love it!!

Apr. 6, 2006 - Very Good Advice

I love reading your blog because it gives me the courage to try some of the whacky ideas careening around in my head. I very much enjoy thinking "outside of the box", but often suffer from my own or other's censorship so I end up keeping most of my ideas to myself, which of course stifles creativity. Thanks for being such a great encourager!

I also really like your creativehomeschooling.com website, and hope to order a few things from it in the near future.

You're pretty! You look so good in that picture, although you look really good with the eye patch too--you're very vesitile! (did I spell that right, it looks funny)

Anyway, the dresses are darling, I've got to learn how to sew!
