Creative Homeschooling is...Thinking Out-of-the-Box!

First Standardized Test!
Read an almost identical story from, another homeschool mom! CLICK
This
summer my eldest son was required to take his first standardized
(government) test. This is the first state we've lived in that
requires MANDATORY TESTING and I have to say I was a bit nervous
about it. The testing is not only a measure of what my child knows but
is also my first "report card" as his teacher in some respects as
well. My homeschooling methods are somewhat similar to my homeliving
methods, kind of creative, screwy and out-of-the box. My
idea of complete curriculum
consist of things that I happen to find at the store, yard sales and
ebay. With the exception of this coming school year (which
for the first time I bought a complete set), I have never spent more
than $100 per year for both children combined! I have basically
just focused on the three Rs and not worried much about the rest,
especially since my two eldest boys read history and science books just
for fun...I mean, why squelch that desire to learn by force feeding
them those subjects with a daily dose of dry, tedious workbooks? So you
want to know how he did with all that relaxed, unconventional and
frugal home education? Overall, total battery for 6th grade, he scored in the 97%! With
the exception of Vocabulary (scored in 7.5 grade) and Spelling
(6.1 grade) he tested at high school level with most scores in the 12.9 ranking...that's 12th grade, 9th month. What's really surprising, is that he's never worked in any Science or Social Studies curriculum, both
of which he scored in the 12th grade level! Other than to share a
proud moment, my point to all of this is... RELAX! Don't get all stressed, worrying if your children are spending enough hours in their workbooks. Good education does not have to be like going to a job, putting in your time on a punch clock. Learning in an environment that is relaxed and fun, can take root deeper in your child's mind and in less time.
