Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Poetry
I have always loved poetry and am now getting back in the mood for writing some. I pulled an old book off of my shelf the other day knowing that it was poems of Robert Louis Stevenson but never having read any. What a treasure! There is just something that breathes and lives and awakes in me when I read poetry. Thought I'd share a bit from him.
Picture-books in Winter
Summer fading, winter comes-- Frosty mornings, tingling thumbs, Window robins, winter rooks, And the picture story-books.
Water now is turned to stone Nurse and I can walk upon; Still we find the flowing brooks In the picture story-books.
All the pretty things put by, Wait upon the children's eye, Sheep and shepherds, trees and crooks, In the picture story-books.
We may see how all things are Seas and cities, near and far, And the flying fairies' looks, In the picture story-books.
How am I to sing your praise, Happy chimney-corner days, Sitting safe in nursery nooks, Reading picture story-books?

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 My book appetite.
Much to my DH consternation, I cannot manage to read just one book at a time. We have come to an agreeable understanding that I can read however many books at the same time as I please as long as I don't leave them all over the house.
So I usually have a long list of current books which may or may not get finished this year. I have learned to avoid most fiction like the plague because once I start I can't stop until I've devoured the whole thing which usually only takes about 24 hours:)
I'm doing my best to immerse myself into homeschooling information and methods since I'm at the beginning of my formal schooling journey so I'm reading
The Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola
Home Education by Charlotte Mason
For the Family's Sake by Susan Schaffer MacCullay (?)
and then I'm not sure of the exact title but the other one is
A mom's guide to surviving homeschooling
I've also been dealing with problems with my thryoid so am researching that and reading
Living Well with Grave's disease and Hyperthyroidism by Mary Somon (?)
Can you tell I'm a bit lazy today and don't want to get up to check the exact titles and spellings of these books and authors. |
