Oct. 3, 2007 - Who Gets The "F"?

Living in a rural area is different.
For me, anyway.

Everybody knows everybody's news-
good and bad.

Your "stuff" is just out there for all to see....
and discuss, of course.

So, we're "the homeschoolers".
The ones with the scarlet "H" on our foreheads.

Thankfully, my kids have a wonderful reputation in the area.

(Local store owner said to me:
"Your kids are all so nice, and smart, and well-mannered. You sure they're yours?
Because we goof often, I gave the mature response and stuck out my tongue.)

Once in awhile, another family will try homeschooling for a bit.
Not often but it happens.
Never lasts for long...

So that gives everyone a chance to discuss homeschooling with me when I'm out and about.
Because they know of a family that homeschools, they are quite knowledgeable about it.

So yesterday while I was at the post office, a reference to a homeschool family came up that wasn't positive.
The implication being that we were the exceptions...

And it hit me.

When kids have parents that don't care, will any educational method will work?

So I asked that.

And a great discussion ensued.

I say "great" because we both were thinking.
A lot.
And the truth is that the kids that are in public schools who have parents that don't care, don't do well in public school.
And the kids whose parents are claiming homeschooling because the parents are "too lazy" to put them in school don't do well.

And it's not about the educational choice.

And everyone knows my nearest neighbors. They're the ones that are always screaming and cussing at their kids. Both parents have been arrested a few times. And their kids are in public school. And the littlest one flunked kindergarten and first grade. So he's in second grade and "should" be in fourth. Has the schooling they've chosen failed those kids?

Or have the parents?

I'm just sayin'....

LizzieBee here. Excellent thoughts and insights. I'm nearing the end of our homeschooling journey, so I mainly just ignore most comments with the retort "Well, my daughter enters college next year, so..." That shuts down just about every objection (who can argue with success)? Regarding that article on Marco Martinez...okay, I just have to say it...Great minds think alike. :-)

Most excellent point! Going now to file that in my "best homeschooling come-backs" drawer...

The education of a youngster is definitely an equation! There are definitely multiple factors involved....

Geez, there I go into math mode....sorry!

Every post you write, no matter how "right on" is still SOO entertaining....thanks!

Thanks for that neat post. I know a family who is "all for" homeschooling- and have home schooled their kids for years.. yet, the wife would scream and yell at her husband (even throwing things at him at times), and punish the children unreasonable when they misbehaved. She teaches her children to obey, but sadly, out of fear.. them knowing that if they didn't listen- they are gonna "get it".. it's just so sad. I hope that when I have children, the Lord helps me to lead and raise them out of love, rather than fear, regardless of how I end up schooling them.. again, great post!

I get creamed for saying this (and I have many times), but all the money and all the state and federal programs in world will not solve the education problems that our country faces. The problems will never be solved using these methods because we cannot legislate good parenting. Only when our children have active and involved parents who take an interest in their children’s education will we start to solve the problems in the classroom.

Generally speaking, you don't get problem children without problem parents.... Some people should NOT be allowed to keep their children, some people should NOT be sending their children to school....
We don't live in a rural area, we are smack bang in the middle of a city and there are not secrets either. We are an anomaly.... mostly people think that homeschooling is a good thing..

Great post! I've heard comments about "those other" homeschoolers who let their kids break neighborhood rules, etc. I always feel the obligation to point out that that kind of behavior is the exception, not the rule, with homeschoolers.

Thanks for all your comments on my blog, and thanks also for the link you put in today's comment. I went to that site and got QUITE the education on conjunctivitis. I think that must be what our little bird has. It suggested I wash my bird feeders out with a bleach solution. .....as if.

Yep, that's what I've always said about schooling/parenting, when the topic of monitoring homeschoolers comes up. Sure, you'll find homeschooling parents who aren't doing their job. But what makes you think the parents will be any more responsible if the kid goes to p.s.?
