Feb. 6, 2008 - Oh, the Inhumanity
Posted in Parenting

We don't give allowances to the kids.
And they have "chores" that they are required to do daily.
And if they get in trouble, there are plenty of extra chores they "get" to do.
There was a time when the two boys were teens, that they would get a little *ahem* mouthy at times.
My husband's famous line was:
"I see your mouth moving but all I hear is, 'More chores'".
And more chores it was.

It was a good season for me.
My garden was well weeded.
My car was spotless.
Things were scrubbed clean.

Ah, the good ole days...

Anyway, since we don't give allowances, a kid is reduced to this:

Just to earn some cash.

A deal between the youngest and Daddy...
When it was suggested, she said; "I thought it was a chore?".
No sweetie, if you're not in trouble you can wash it for cash.

Either way, I didn't have to do it!

This just might work (woo hahahaha) :)
Mine are mouthy too (I have NO idea where they get that from-nope NO idea) and they too have chores with no allowance. But punishment for them is being grounded-but more chores should work out nicely :)

I am stealing your husband's most excellent line. I cannot wait to see the General's reaction when he hears that. I might get the Boss to spit soda up through her nose, too, which would be a cool bonus!

So far, this is one of my favorite things about having a child grow into a young adult: manual labor. =)

Feb. 6, 2008 - no allowance

Blondie doesn't get allowance either. I pay her for babysitting Red when I have meetings. She tracks it on the calendar and I'm regularly in debt to her. When she comments that I owe her money, Sir generally asks her if she's wearing clothes and did she eat that day.

but I do pay her... eventually.

The first definition of "allowance" is "the act of allowing." Yep. That about sums up my children's allowances. We allow them to eat. We allow them to breathe. Do your car washers hire out?

Oh boy I'm going to have to remember that saying about mouths moving and more chores. LOL. Yup, I just might get a whole bunch of work done around here *grin* I always pay my son to wash and vacuum my car :) He actually like to do it so that's a bonus.

LOLROF! I really did laugh out loud at your dh's line of moving mouth & more chores. I'm going to tell that to my dh-he will appreciate that.
We don't give allowances either. When the kids mention them, my dh says, "Isn't ALLOWING you to sleep inside enough?"
We have paid for extra jobs, like you, that weren't chores, but that doesn't happen very often.

Wow! my kids would fall over and die if they read this -- they think they are the ONLY children in the whole wide world that don't get paid to live here! lol and I really like that quote from your husband!
