Mar. 11, 2008 - "Field" Trip
Posted in Skool

Wanna go?
Come on!

Let's follow Guy as he heads to the woods:Ok, so you don't know him and he has an axe and a rifle...
Don't worry!
The rifle is for protection. There are snakes in the woods.
And the axe is needed for this trip!

Ah! There it is:

It's an old stump.
Woo Hoo!

So what's so special about this old stump?
Well, it's full of pine resin.
And that makes it fatwood.
Only Guy calls it "fat lighter", but it's the same thing.

So he gets out his handy-dandy axe...

And he gets some of this:
No, he hasn't lost his mind!
Not even after being married to me....

It's a "non-toxic, environmentally friendly, easy to use, hot burning" quick and easy way to start this:

Hanging out with Guy is always educational!

or HOT as the case may be. Yes, it is very educational and I appreciate the lesson especially because it came with pictures and I can always relate to pictures :-)

Mar. 11, 2008 - I never heard of 'fatwood'

but I enjoyed taking this field trip with you. My Boy Scout son has discovered something else that starts a fire quickly. Whenever the buzzer goes off for the dryer he races to clean the lint filter and collects the lint in a bag. When he is on campouts he places a ball of lint in the fire pit, adds a bit from his flint, then strikes the firestarter once and voila instant fire. They have won many firestarting contests because of how quickly the fire starts and how hot it burns. I'm not sure I'd want him to know about 'fatwood' though. He'd be out chopping trees to see how good it works. LOL

I'm glad this was a virtual field trip because there's no way I would ever follow a big ex-Marine toting a gun and ax into the woods.

I have never heard that called "fatwood" before. Wish we had woods on our own property so we could cut our own firewood...

Blessings,

Now that is an environmentally friendly way to start a fire, plus educational to boot. What fun. (My son loves to build camp fires.)

oh I love a good fire.

Does that fatwood only come from pine? We have a lot of old stumps that is elm or cottonwood - does that work.

Love the comment on dryer flint - I'll have to tell Blondie.

See, now I thought fat wood was the stick from a corn dog! Well, I guess you learn somthing new everyday! :) Seriously, that was really cool. I had no idea!

PS I'd send you a virtual tulip, but they are too stumpy to cut!

That's really interesting. I've never heard of it before. I'll have to keep that in mind for when we go camping.

I can't get over how y'all have all that green at this time of year. We're under a foot of snow right now. LOL

Have a blessed day!

I would try it...but my mommy told me never to play with fire, because me and fire together would be a lot worse for the environment than anything Al Gore could dream up.

Oh, lol, acutally, I did got out of town again....my grandad had a stroke when were in Mexico so we went down to visit him in VA....basically, I've been living out of a suitcase for the past month. hehe.
