Jul. 1, 2008 - When Hatching Chicks...
Posted in Skool

...you should never let your water go dry in the incubator.
But if it happens one time, just one time, you'll have problems with an egg.
Not that we would do something like forget to check it once,
but from what the "big boys" have told me it could be a problem..... *ahem*

So assuming that someone else forgot to check the water one time and let it go dry, it could possibly make the eggshell too dry for the chick to get out.

And if, hypothetically speaking, that happened, the chick wouldn't stand a chance without a Hero to rescue it:

And it might be a messy job. And it might look like one bedraggled chick:

But the chick might just make it:

Or so I've heard.....

wonder what name he goes by. Perhaps Captain Cluck or maybe the Chickenator.
I would never make a good farmer. I had no idea about the water and even less of an idea that you could rescue the chicks. They are beautiful though. Are they egg layers or dinner?

I'm so glad the chick had a hero on standby even though there was never any danger of dehydration or anything. So very cute, what's his name? Not the hero, the chick!!!

A mutual friend "Arby" got us on chickens too. How many do you have? We didn't do the incubator. We tried quail eggs a couple of years ago in a dinky thing - it fried the eggs. We bought our brood of five, two Bantams (one rooster) and three regular size hens.
Happy 4th!

awww....you deserve a medal.

and that's way better results then us trying to save a baby rabbit's life once. Poor thing got so scared of us, that AFTER it squirmed out of our hands and ran up my then-baby sister's shorts, it ran off and got stuck in some barbed wire under the deck....
so much for trying to help.

I couldn't remember the phrase that you've used in the past ("I dorked it.") or I would have borrowed it. I was left with "doofus."

What a guy! So, it doesn't bother you that he goes around picking up chicks? :)

Hope the chick made it! I will be posting again, one of these days when I get my new blog up. I miss reading all of your posts and I guess I just need to get going here and get off my duff and get my new blog up!

We have had the same problem. We had a batch where power went out twice and moisture, well, thought the kids were checking... Anyway, we only had 6 hatch out of like 18 I think. One had difficulty, the legs were never right. Named her splity, one other chick died right away and splity lived a few months. Incubators....we'll blame it on that.

Oh, how cute are THEY!!!! What kind of chickies are they? They look a little different from one another, so I'm assuming it's a mix of babies? They are so CUTE!

I'm glad you had a Hero to save the day. We've hatched eggs a few times, and I've been terrified of the water drying out.

Wow, I can't believe it! I thought they couldn't make it if you did that. How did you know it was trying to get out? Your husband must have very sensitive hands in order not to have hurt the chick. Amazing!
