Ants that aren't!

Sorry to be confusing!

I've been trying to catch a shot of one of these critters for a while now.

They move FAST!
And they hide:

I'd never seen or heard of them until we moved here.
They're called Cow Ants or Red Velvet Ants.
They're brightly colored, fuzzy, and look like a HUGE ant.
But they're NOT ants.
They're wasps??!!
Now I know them pretty well.
I sometimes step on them with bare feet.
Then I think not nice thoughts.
Hurts worse than a wasp sting or a fire ant bite!

Only the female stings.
Only the male has wings.
I'm glad!

I'd sure hate for them to sting AND fly....

If I'm remembering correctly, we ARE from the same state, right?! How come I never see cool stuff like this and the armadillo?

Yuck...those are creepy looking things. Must be critter week here at HSB as I blogged a few days ago about our 8-legged friend outside our window.

Those things to hurt. They get into my flower beds and just wait to jump out and sting. : (
We don't have armadillos here yet. They have made it to areas twenty five miles away though.

I thought they were mutant ants here in Kansas. I squash every one of them I see, usually by the front door. Please don't step on anymore barefooted. OWWW!

Sep. 24, 2008 - Must be weird wasp week
Posted by stackeyha
Although I've seen velvet ants before...never at home but we have a natural museum-y walking place nearby and have seen them there quite a few times.

But we had a weird wasp last week (it dug holes and was gold and orange, still haven't classified it (you'll see when you check my blog...blogspot has a video)...

I don't like wasps in any fashion. I'll be asking God about them when I get there.
