although I feel rather hypocritical, because I wrote that and tried to sound all positive, then I went and watched McCain's speech and...well....lost it. ;)
You read half of War and Peace? :D Hehe...well, I guess we're even then, because I've only seen half of the Audrey Hepburn movie! I am with your daughter, I refused to watch the movie until I was done with the book--so I started it over the weekend. I need to finish it...so far I like it, though. Audrey is a great Natasha-but I'm most pleased with Henry Fonda! He is adorably awkward and dorky!
Anyway, yes, to answer your question--I read the Louise and Aylmer Maude translation. I've heard that they are the best translation for Dostoevsky, so I assume they are pretty highly respected when it comes to Tolstoy as well. I read the Norton Critical Edition, though, and it was really good--had some great notes and extras. It didn't have the French translated (except outside of the text) but that was good for me; since I started taking Spanish I needed something to brush up on my French with! :)

So well said! What is it with New Zealand? I said to hubby on November 4th, "That's it, we're moving to New Zealand!" Since then, I've heard several other people mention NZ. I'm thinking we could very well just start a New America there, forge a new colony. It's worth a try at least.
