A lot of talk has been going around about this particular book/movie so I thought I would get the audio book and find out for myself.
Yes, the book was in fact written by an athiest. Did that stop me from wanting to read it? No. It might have, had the fact not been put forth quite so much for me to examine. In fact, the movie would probably had opened and closed with little or no fan fare as far as I am concerned if nothing were said about it.
The fact is people want to see the movie because they are being told not to. It's a fact of life. It is our sinful nature to want to do that which we were told not to do. This started in the garden and still continues to this day.
Do I feel that Christians should go see the movie? Yes and no. I feel that for teens and adults it might be turned into a learning event. A time to really examine your relationship with God and see what people who don't believe actually feel about the church and God. Or at least this person.
Also, since starting to listen to the book, I have found blatent misuses of certain terms. For example, "deamon" and "Bishop". Having a teen read the book and than look up what these terms really mean might help them understand why athiest are where they are. (misunderstanding of God and the church)
Now, I realize that this opinion will probably get a lot of people angry but I will repeat my original stand on this...I feel the book/movie might be good for teens and adults...I would in no way support taking a small child or new believer to it as it could confuse the quite a bit. I also would encourage parents to read the book before deciding whether or not your child's faith is strong enough to read it themselves.
I am just not quite sure I want someone telling me what I and my child should read and watch. Especially when the person doesn't even know us. |
