HERPES Herpes is caused by a virus from the same family of viruses that causes chicken pox. It's estimated that about 90 percent of the general population has some type of herpes virus in their bodies. This doesn't mean that everyone is affected by it. This is also the virus that causes cold sores. Vinegar can treat the sores and help eliminate the virus. Genital herpes is caused by another strain of the virus, but those sores, too, can be treated with vinegar. To relieve pain and discomfort, soak a cotton swab in undiluted cider vinegar and gently apply to the sores. You should get rapid relief from itching and burning. Apply three times a day to speed healing of the sores. HICCUPS A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar relieves hiccups more effectively than anything else, including lemon juice, sugar, breathing into a paper bag or having a friend sneak up on you and scare you. HIVES Whether the hives are caused by an allergic reaction or from stress and nerves, vinegar can bring you relief. Mix an ounce of white vinegar with three ounces of cornstarch to form a paste. Dab gently on the hives. This should relieve the pain quickly and the cornstarch will also help dry out the hives. More To Follow In Him Cysco ![]() |

HEADACHES/MIGRAINES There are several ways to use vinegar to relieve headache pain: - A popular folk remedy is to take a tablespoon of vinegar and a teaspoon of honey mixed in warm water to cure a headache. Some people claim this has stopped the pain of severe migraines. - Another way to use vinegar, if taking it internally doesn't work, is to soak a cloth in vinegar and wrap it securely around your head. Lie quietly until the headache goes away. - Try a vinegar vaporizer for bad headache pain: Put two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a pot of water and bring to a boil. Remove it from the heat and pour into a bowl. Using a large bath towel, make a tent over your head and the bowl. Carefully lean over the bowl and slowly begin to inhale the steam. Note: Don't inhale too deeply, as the vinegar steam can be very irritating at first! Breathe the vapors gently until you feel relief, usually within 15 to 20 minutes, if not sooner. HEAT TOLERANCE According to D. C. Jarvis' Folk Medicine, taking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water daily can help you to better tolerate heat. This can be very helpful during hot summer months, when you're active and sweating a lot. Sweating causes the body to lose potassium and cider vinegar is a good source of potassium. Need to do a short entry today, but I will post more tomorrow. In Him Cysco ![]() |

EARS Vinegar is doctor recommended for treating ear infections. But it can also be used to treat "swimmer's ear," a condition caused by water in the ear canal. Some people can develop swimmer's ear from taking a shower! The result is pain, burning and sometimes decreased hearing. Here's the recipe for a popular concoction used by scuba divers. It's called "Ear Beer." Mix a quarter cup of water, a quarter cup of cider vinegar and a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol. Put the mixture into a small squeeze bottle. After swimming, diving or a shower, if you notice that you have water in your ear, lie onone side and place five drops of the solution in your ear. Lie still for 30 seconds to a minute. Then slowly rise and tilt your head in the opposite direction. You'll feel the solution run out. Now lie down on the opposite side and repeat the procedure in your other ear. This will help clear the ear and prevent ear infections. EYES Studies have shown that antioxidants such as beta carotene protect your eyes from developing cataracts. Beta carotene is the primary antioxidant contained in apple cider vinegar, says Earl Mindell. It follows that drinking a tablespoon of vinegar in a glass of water daily can help stop cataracts from forming. FINGERNAILS You can strengthen thin, brittle fingernails with apple cider vinegar. Drink a glass of water with a tablespoon of cider vinegar three times a day or use the same mixture for a nail soak. Either way (or both!) it will help. FOOD POISONING According to the book Folk Medicine, by D.C. Jarvis, M.D., apple cider vinegar can be used in the prevention and treatment of food poisoning. Drinking a few tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before meals can prevent gastrointestinal distress caused by various microbes. And, a few sips at a time after becoming ill from spoiled food can cure it because vinegar can kill bacteria in the digestive tract. FOOT ODOR For foot odor, wash the feet, then soak in a solution of a half cup of cider vinegar to a pint of warm water. Wipe your shoes with a cloth soaked in vinegar. HAIR CARE Make dull hair shine with a rinse of one cup cider vinegar and one cup distilled water. Shampoo as usual, then rinse. This can slao help highlight blonde hair that's been dulled by shampoo, cream rinse, hair spray and styling gel residue left on the hair. Vinegar can also help tame wild, frizzy hair. DANDRUFF Dandruff is caused by bacteria that clog the hair follicles, forming a crust. But fortunately, cider vinegar can kill the bacteria and relieve the itching. Soak your hair and scalp with warm cider vinegar, cover your head with a plastic shower cap and leave it on for at least a half hour. Then shampoo and rinse as usual. Repeat this treatment up to three times a week until the problem dandruff is gone. DENTURE ODOR Soaking dentures in white vinegar several times a week can prevent odor buildup. Follow the soak with a vigorous brushing with a commercial denture cleanser or a little baking soda. Make sure to rinse the dentures before using baking soda. DIABETES Studies show that apple cider vinegar can help control blood sugar levels in diabetics, according to Earl Mindell, Ph.D., author of Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar. "Physicians frequently recommend high-fiber diets to help control diabetes," he says. And several studies have shown that pectin, the fiber in apple cider vinegar, helps control blood sugar (glucose) levels in diabetes." Try a regular dosage of one teaspoon of cider vinegar in a glass of water two to three times per day. Note: This is not a replacement for insulin and other doctor-prescribed medication. DIARRHEA Pectin found in apples and apple cider vinegar is known to clean intestines and stimulate bowel activity, thus fighting constipation. Yet, surprisingly, pectin also has effective antidiarrheal action at the same time! In fact, it's used in many over-the-counter diarrhea preparations, says Earl Mindell, Ph.D. "Pectin is the 'pectate' in the popular over-the-counter diarrhea preparation Kaopectate," he says. Try a teaspoon or two in a small amount of water. Vinegar can also fight several types of bacteria that can cause diarrhea. DRY HANDS Though today's detergents seem to pay more attention to their effects on the skin, in order to be effective cleansing agents, they are still hard on hands. Washing dishes really takes its toll on hands, often leaving them rough and chaffed. For relief of rough, dry hands, try this remedy from the Vinegar Man, Lawrence Diggs, in The Vinegar Connoisseurs International Newsletter: Put some of your favorite herbs and/or spices in a one gallon container. (I use a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom, but you can mix and match what you like.) Then add one gallon of white distilled vinegar. Let this set for about a month. Strain the vinegar through a fine clothlike muslin and then pour it into a spray bottle. Spray this vinegar on your hands after washing dishes. Then rub your hands together making sure that the vinegar is well distributed over the hands and wrists. The vinegar neutralizes the alkali found in most soaps and the herbs and spices give a nice scent. This combination can also be sprayed around the house to get rid of unwanted odors. CORNS AND CALLUSES To remove painful corns and calluses, soak your feet in a pan of warm water to which a half cup of apple cider vinegar has been added. After about 20 minutes, take a clean pumice stone and gently rub down the corns and calluses. Afterward, soak a cotton ball in cider vinegar and apply to the corns and calluses. Let dry. COUGHS A popular folk remedy calls for mixing the juice of one lemon, a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup and drinking it to stop coughs and soothe sore throats. Here's a formula for cough syrup, from Mark and Buffy Nichols, authors of the book A Grssroots Survival Company Cookbook of Memories, Remdies and Recipes From the Great Depression: Mix together 1/2 teaspoon cayeene pepper, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 4 tablespoons boiling water, 4 tablespoons honey and the juice of one lemon. Mix well and if too "hot" due to the pepper and ginger, add more water. Take one or two teaspoons every few hours. CRAMPS Muscle cramps in the legs, feet, or other parts of the body can be quite painful, but vinegar may help. Such muscle cramps are caused by too low a level of potassium. Take a teaspoon of vinegar when suffering from a muscle cramp to quickly bring your potassium level back up and relieve the cramping. More to Follow Tomorrow In Him Cysco ![]() |

CHOLESTEROL Use vinegar as part of a healthy diet to lower cholesterol. Drink a teaspoon of cider vinegar in a glass of water three times a day. Use vinegar in soups and in salad dressings. However you choose to add it to your diet, you'll be taking a big step toward lowering your cholesterol levels. Vinegar contains amino acids that can neutralize harmful LDL cholesterol. CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (CFS) It's said that vinegar in drinking water is very effective in eliminating the low-grade fevers that are present in chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers. It also helps eliminate thrush, (another CFS symptom) caused by fungus, often brought on by use of antibiotics. Mix four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a gallon of drinking water. Drink up to one gallon each day. COLDS According to Earl Mindell, Ph.D., author of the book Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar, your body becomes more alkaline just before you get a cold or the flu. He suggests taking vinegar to prevent infection since it's acidic in nature. "Taking a teaspoon in a half cup of water two or three times a day when a cold is coming on can help rebuild pH levels, warding off the cold," he says. If you don't mind black pepper, you might try this old folk remedy for a chest cold: Soak brown paper in vinegar, shake black pepper on one side of it, lay it across your chest pepper side down, then tie it to your chest with strips of cloth. Keep in place for 20 minutes, then remove. Of this treatment, Earl Mindell says: "At worst, the pepper might make you sneeze." CONSTIPATION Apple cider vinegar helps relieve constipation in several ways. First, apples are a good source of pectin, which detoxifies the intestines and stimulates bowel activity. Apples also contain potassium and phosphorous, which help control digestive upsets. These things are present in viegar, as well. When vinegar is made, sugars in apples are converted to acids that stimulate saliva and aid digestion to help prevent constipation. Vinegar has many things going for it when treating constipation. Mix two teaspoons cider vinegar in a glass of water. Drink at bedtime. If you don't experience relief in the morning, try this: Mix two teaspoons of cider vinegar and a tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot water. If your problem persists, see your doctor.
