Trauma & Drama
|
The
title of this post contains two words that I do not deal well with. I
have had a terrible headache and queasy stomache all day. Lastnight my 14 year old daughter and I had to stay in the barn with our suffering old mare. We had to help the vet put her down in the end, and the practical side of things is that a violent, agonzing death happening to someone or something you love is traumatic. My poor daughter had to help me with this, because we were home without Doug here. I had told her to go on into the house, but she wanted to stay so her horse didn't think she didn't care. It was a brave thing to do, because it was a very harsh death. The mare colicked, twisted a gut and got toxic. She was in terrible pain. The night ended with the vet, a neighbor, and me, somehow hauling the poor creature into a horse trailer to be driven away after she had died. I still don't know how we did that, but my aching muscles remind me of what undignified thing we did to her every move I make. I felt so sorry for her loss of a dignified death. My husband came home from his hunting trip as soon as he found out, and he too, got his share of trauma and drama as he had to unload her corpse by himself today. The whole thing makes us all just sick. It feels like a nightmare really. It must have been just as bad as I remember it, because the poor vet had flowers delivered to the children and I. How he remembered to do that with running similar calls all day and night this week because of the bad weather is beyond me. He's a believer, and perhaps hearing us girls praying for the Lord to give us the strength we needed helped him do what he needed to as well. Tough day. New rule: No more old horses. That makes two this year. Painful. |
