My husband farms walnuts (orchards) for a living and grows walnut nursery stock. Nursery stock is when the trees are grown from a seed and then sold to farmers to plant in their orchards. It's a unique and very interesting side of farming.
The kids and I have begun to document this process and I thought it would be good to share it here. Long before I started my homeschooling adventure, friends would come out on "field trips" several times a year to watch the process of growing a walnut tree from seed. This will hopefully be like a virtual field trip. And truthfully, this will solidify the whole process in my head.
Walnut Nursery
Here is a picture of the black walnut seed. Seed comes from a tree specificly grown as a seed source. Why plant black walnut seed? Because it has a stronger root system and is less susceptible to disease's.
Planting happens in October and November.
