Circle/Together time _Monday

Kendra has posted about circle time and mentions that I recently shared at our churches homeschool encouragement day, what the kid’s and I accomplish together during our school week.

So for this week, I am going to list each day what we do together and what resources we are currently using.

But first!

When we started circle time I planned way too much. I planned many good things with high hopes, but my kid’s just weren’t ready for them. Things were not working. It was so much work! It took stepping back (stopping everything) praying for guidance (asking the Lord what he would have me teach during this time) and then taking very small steps to pull the time together.

I began planning one thing at a time and trying it. After the 5-10 minute time together, I would send the kid’s to do something else and write down how it went, what, if any  resources or supplies I needed to make it better and how long it took to complete.

Pretty soon I saw what was possible and pulled all those mini lessons together. Since then, we have added a few more lessons here and there.

Here is what we currently do on Monday’s:

Morning Circle time:

*Cue CD's, water bottles, colored pencils, paper, clipboards, kleenex

Pledges – American Flag, Christian Flag, Bible

Need: flag, bible

Bible time

Need: Hidden Treasures, copy of coloring page

Singing – silly songs and hymns

Need: computer (download of church hymns) & Wee Sing bible songs

Memory work  - Ephesians copy for everyone

(Making a copy for everyone saves from having to wait for everyone to look it up.)

Music – The Story of the Orchestra

Coloring a Proverbs picture and making a grammar page

Grammar page –this is what we are doing, and loving it

Read Aloud - Witch of Blackbird Pond

Playing with Tangrams while Mom reads

Together afternoon time:

History - Sonlight American History

Science -Zoology (currently a chapter on bats)

Resources: for the theyounger two kid's I pulled out simple pages on bats from the Giant Science Book.

How do a bats big ears work?

Read Aloud - Farmer Boy

Dana,

It was great meeting you. I learned a lot from you. Even though I know about circle time and like the idea, I haven't really implemented it fully. The only thing we do consistently is having a morning devotion which involves reading a passage from the Bible, discuss it, and then memorize a bible verse together. Thanks again for all your ideas.

I'm wondering what CD's you are referring to. I meant to ask last weekend but forgot. Or did I? I forgot.

Forgetfully yours,

I keep hearing about circle time; just not sure how to implement it. I think I will have to come back and read more tomorrow.

Kristi -
Cue up CD's means I put the neccessary CD's in the player and set them to the right song or for memory to the right passage. For example - for the Orchestra Study I set the cd to the piece we are studying or composer. For language/grammar, I set it to whatever we are working on - say preposition's. This is all so I don't have to waste the time doing it while the kids are sitting there.

Rebecca - I started with the book about nouns called Merry-Go-Round. It's the first book that Elizabeth Foss starts with in her Lively Language Lessons series she posts at serendipity. (see link above)

Make sure to take a look at Kendra's blog at Preschoolers and Peace_see my sidebar. She has a wealth of info on circle time. See you back tomorrow!
