• Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - "We NEED a Name" Contest!!

Okay... so I'm due the 13th of May, and while this seems like awhile, I'm getting a little anxious about the fact that hubby and I haven't got even ONE name for this little blessing... I'm serious...

Now, hubby seems to think that we have plenty of time, but you must know that on child number three we didn't have a boy name picked out, and when I told him it was time to go to the hospital, he took out the name book and said, "Well, shouldn't we pick something out for a boy?"  It was then I so "excellently" let him know that if it were a boy, I would be choosing the name!

This happened for number four as well, as I'd had a dream of having a boy (name and all) so we didn't even have a girl name picked out.  (I, of course, had one just in case but really thought we were having a boy.)  While I was in labor the nurse asked what our girl name would be and when we said we didn't have one, she gave us a suggestion that just "happened" to be the name I wanted!!!!!  My husband was flabbergasted!

So here we are on our sixth pregnancy (our seventeen year old is from Mike's previous marriage) and we don't have a name for a boy or a girl (and we don't know what we're having).  I did have a dream before getting pregnant, and I will share that name after I hear from all of you, but I've decided to have a contest (that will maybe help my nerves a little.  You see, at this stage of the game, I absolutely refuse to get out the name book and start at "A"...)

So, there are two ways to win this contest (which will be going for a little while).
  • Share a funny post on what the newest "Verlennich" baby's name should be
  • Share a serious name (middle ones are also willingly accepted!) that will help me to keep some sanity as my due date nears!  Please share any biblical meanings or references to anything you might suggest.
  • (You can enter as many times as you like and be "qualified" for each time.  The more suggestions, the better chance of you winning!)
Winners will be announced... well, when we decide on a name... What can you win?  Here it is... a MAGNET!  (I'm running another contest where you can win a different magnet if you want to check that out as well...)

(actual size 3.43" x 1.93")

© 2006 Amy Verlennich (Please do not reproduce in any way without permission.)

The contest will be running until... well, until we figure out a name!  So I guess it depends on how witty and seriously-great-name-thinkers you guys are!  Thanks for all your help!

In Him,
Amy

Oooh, names are such a personal thing. All of our boys' names ended up ending in '-an' and tended toward the Celtic. Our daughter's name (chosen by my husband well before we met!) is Russian. Although their names do fit them, they weren't (at the time) chosen for their meaning (except to remove a few names from the list whose meaning we did NOT like).

So... can we have hints toward what kind of names you like? Any certain nationality or rhythm to them? Just curious. :)

By the way... we figured out 3DS2's middle name in the hospital while I was in labor. It seemed to help a bit to... put some urgency to it. ;)

We didn't name our third until after she was born, because I thought it was a boy. We still have a boys name but have never used it. My other two were named before they were born. Along the lines of the previous comment, it's hard to give ideas since we don't know what your other kids names are. Some people use alliteration for their kids names. (I hope that is the right word). What is the origin of your last name? I actually am not sure how to pronounce it either, which could make a difference in what I would suggest. So, I think you need to give more informatio, although I know you won't post your kids names and thats ok.

Okay ladies... you know how I feel about the whole name thing... but for this one moment in time... I will share the names of our children in the comments section for a little while before I delete it. (Yes, I know this is still not completely "safe" so I don't want any lectures on the "safe code", kay? a;lskdjfa;sdlkfj)

My husband's name is Michael Joseph Verlennich (pronounced "Ver-len-itch"... really how it looks). It's Croatian (slavic) and only our first son has his dark skin, dark hair (although no black hair yet in any of my children... hint, hint God... tee hee). My husband's grandfather's names were both "Joseph" and that's the name of Mike's first son... It's also the middle name of our first born... so "Joseph" is DEFINITELY out!!!! a;lsdkfjas;dlkfj

Joseph is the name of my step-son, as I mentioned, so even though I love the name Josiah, it's out of the running for now while we already have a "Joe" in the house. We always have a nickname back up because we know that families have a tendency to shorten names up, so we think a lot about that as well when picking a name. I guess you should know that all of the boys have nicknames with three letters, one syllable and the girls have four letters two syllables. Also, Mike's nickname is one syllable (like the boys) and four letters (like the girls) and "Amy" is two syllables (like the girls) with three letters (like the boys). (We didn't do this intentionally to start with, but that's how it's been so far...)

Nikolas ("Nik") is our first born (spelling is slavic since he looked like daddy "from the shoot". And even though we're not Catholic, we later found out that "St. Nick" was the patron saint of pawn brokers... and we owned a pawn shop at the time...).

Izak ("Ike" who was supposed to be "Zak" but Nik started calling him Ike from the moment we brought him home and it stuck) was our next one which was so perfect cuz it means laughter, and he certainly brings a smile to our faces! I also laughed because after having our first son look so much like daddy, Mike said he didn't "make" babies with blue eyes... of course, God smiled at that and Izak has slate blue eyes that are so beautiful.

Gabrielle ("Gabi" who is the most quiet of all the kids) was our first girl and Nikolas named her from the girl on Sesame Street. He said he liked that and we did too. If you hear her daddy say her name, you'd think she's royalty. This was a funny story too, as Mike said his "dominant genes gave out" on the blue-eyed Izak, but that he'd never make a girl... a;slkdjfsaldkfjs;dlkfj

Izabella ("Elli") was next and a surprise to us all since I thought I was having a boy from a dream I'd had. What was funny about her name was I'd dreamt when I was pregnant with Gabrielle, that I'd had twin girls and named them Gabrielle and Izabella. I'd liked the name since then but Mike wasn't so keen on it. When the nurse asked us during the delivery, what girl name we had picked out, we told her we didn't have one cuz we were sure we were having a boy. She then gave the suggestion of "Izabella"... Mike turned white... he couldn't believe it.

Jediah was next (not Jedidiah), and he was the one I dreamed would come. We had a horrible scare with him and thought we would loose him. The Lord's hand was on him in the womb and his middle name reflects that... however, hubby told me I can't share middle names, which is a bummer cuz there was so much thought in that too... I guess you'll just have to ask that question when we tour in our motor home!

So there you have it... we have no idea what we're having this time either (we've never found out) and as much as I'd like to tell you what I've been thinking... I want to see what the Lord tells you... I will tell you that I've dreamed about a girl's name (before I was pregnant, but after Izabella and Jediah, that just could mean that another girl is coming eventually...)

I LOVE names! I wanted to have twelve children, just so I could name them. And then I got married and realized that I would have to let my husband share in the decision, too. Bummer.
Anyway...I was going to suggest my very favorite girls name right now, Eliana...but if you call one of your girls Elli, it is probably too close. Eliana means "My God has answered me" and if we are ever blessed with another girl, that will be her name (if I can talk dh into it. LOL) Hmm...other favorites that might fit in well with your kids names....Gideon (not sure at all what it means, but I like it.), Seth (okay...can't find my baby name book. I give up on meanings.), Samuel, Nathaniel, Sophia, Arabella, Juliana, Angelina (okay, can you tell that right now I'm into girls names that end in A?) Leah, Abigail, Hope....oh dear. I could go on endlessly. I'm going to stop now, before you regret allowing me to comment on your blog. :o)

I've been reading your blog for a while and I enjoy it. I love to name babies. Right now, we have 3 children and I'm already anxious to name some more. So I'll give you the names that I'd like to name another boy or girl should I have any more.

Girl: Emma Claire (two syllables in the first name)

Boy: Jackson Conner (could be shortened to Jak)

I've always loved the name Johanna for a girl. A nick name could be Hana. It means God is gracious. ALso Olivia is a favorite but I'm unsure of a nick name. We have a Mikaiah (Mi-Ky-Uh) and call her Kaia (Ky-uh). Hope you find a good one. Blessings on you and your child

Ok, here are my suggestions,
Girl: Annika (Anni for short- third "a" sound, like "ah"- so it sounds like ah-nee)
from Hannah, meaning Grace of God.

Boys: Kristoffer (Kris for short)-means, one who carries Christ in his heart.
Mathias- (Mat for short)-means, girft of the Lord.

So- I think I should win with these ones! Thanks for sharing your kids names. They are precious. We have Nicolas for a boy we may never have. I also have an Isabelle.

Hi Amy,

What a fun idea! Very cool way to get some inspiration! My first suggestion is Lily because I had a dream that I'd have another baby girl and call her Lily and then had a boy. Oh well! It means blossoming flower BTW. Another girls name that almost made the cut for dd5 is Lane which means narrow road (aptly enough!) because it's so feminine. Bethany has always been a favorite as well, and means literally life-town near Jerusalem. Also love Elijah for a boy which means the Lord is my God. Jonah, which means a dove, and Jordan which means descendant are favorites too. Happy name hunting!

Blessings,
Courtney

My daughter is due any day for Ariana Grace. Everyone I've told thinks it is beautiful and 'poetical'. Could be spelled Arianna. Pronouned ARRR, like the beginning or ARGH. ARRRR - e (long vowel sound) - ANNNNN (like 'on') - a (short vowel sound).
For boys, I always wanted an Ethan...it's even in the Bible. Ethan Daniel.
Although our last (Caleb Allen), if he was a girl, was going to be Alexandria Grace. Grace is my mothers name.
This is the first time I've checked out your blog. Very interesting. And SOOO beautiful. Wish I knew how to do this stuff. Maybe soon, will be in TX visiting only daughter when Ariana Grace is born (10 days to go) and large son lives there....and is a computer nerd.....or know it all. Stop by my blog sometime. I've added you to my list.

Alright, here goes: Corin for a boy (Cor for short), and Katherine (Kati) for the girl (there must be a Slavic equivalent of Katherine).

The real test, as you probably know, is to go in the back yard and yell all three names together (first, middle, last) at the top of your lungs and see how it sounds that way.

What you really need is two sets of names: the serious ones that you really are considering and aren't telling anyone until the baby is actually born and is introduced for the first time, and the ones that you are telling people just to get a reaction out of them. We got a great deal of sadistic pleasure out of telling people that we were going to name our children Sven and Sygna (my husband is Norwegian) and watching their reactions. The names weren't so far out there and people were never quite sure if we were serious or not. HA!

But I'm no good at it, so let me warn ya! I tend to like names from the Mayflower passengers & Colonial era: Peregrine, Oceanus, Mercy, Remember, Providence, Love, Wrestling, okay...maybe not.
We live in Cajun country, so here's some recent ones from here:
Our neighbor chose Amalie (Ah-muh-lee) for their new baby girl. Precious! But I have no idea what it means...could mean waller in pig poo, so you'd have to look it up.
A popular name for a boy is Blaise (Blaze). Again, no idea what it means.
Of course, the more rare names like Carue (ka-roo) and Coates pop up every now and again at Wal-mart...
Whatever you do, don't use a traditionally boys name for a girl just because it'll help her be a stronger person. Our most dainty and feminine daughter is named Mason and begs me at least once a week (thru tears) to please have her name changed. Traumatic.
I like Mamaduso's choices! Seems like you need more z's and k's than I can come up with!

You could use Illyana (or any spelling version you like... Illiana, Iliana, Ilyana, Ilyanna... I could go on) and shorten it either Anya or Yana. More Russian than Slavik, but a similar feel to the other names.

There's all the other "similar" names, too: Tatiana (Tati or Tana)... hmm. I just went blank. If I think of the other ones like that, I'll post again. *chuckle*

Hey, I was going to suggest Ethan (didn't someone say that up there.. yeah, there it is *grin*). Eth for a shortened version (eeeth)? ;) I like Cainan, too (also Biblical), but can't for the life of me figure out how to shorten THAT to three.

Back to the drawing board. Have fun! ;)

When my DH and I were expecting our 3rd daughter, we were totally stumped on names...until we discovered, quite by accident, that our other daughters' middle names both meant "grace" or "gracious" (Anne and Jane), so we decided to follow that path for a middle name for our third daughter as well. Then, after we chose her middle name (LeAnne), I found out after she was born, that her middle name was also my great-grandmother's middle name and I had just made "brownie" points with my grandmother!! heehee

Our kids' names sort of have the same pattern as yours....We give them "formal" names, in case they want to be a doctor or something and also to sign on documents. Then, we gave them short names....sooo...we have Becky, Katie, Emily (Emmy) and Josh..sometime called Joshie...but Daddy will make sure THAT doesn't last very long...too girlie!! hee hee

Congratulations!!

Melissa

I couldn't help myself, I had to join in the naming game, too.
How about Zakary (Zak) ... I like Kameron also.
and ...
ChloeBelle. I have to admit this was this name I truly adored and wanted to name my youngest, but this didn't sound good for a boy. ajksdfkgkhjfgkhf
It was my dh grandmother's name and my grandmother's middle name put together. My mil made me promise I wouldn't spell Chloe the same as her mother (Chloea).. I think the a at the end is just beautiful.

I like Tessa also, but it doesn't fit into the nickname-syllable thing. I also like Sophie and Bella, but they don't fit the nickname style either.
I enjoy your posts so much, I'm going to add you to my friend list. Thanks for your posts as well. Have fun choosing a name.

Here are some ideas:
For a girl:
Amaris: the promise of God (Hebrew)
Alethea: truth (Greek) (this is my daughter's name)
Jessamyn

For a boy:
Gideon: great warrior (Hebrew)
Atticus: father-like (English)
Gabriel: hero of God (Hebrew)
Zion: a sign (Hebrew)
Andreas: strong and manly (Greek)

For middle names I really like "virtues" such as Peace, Mercy, Joy, Faith, Courage, Longsuffering, etc.
(Just kidding about Longsuffering. I did meet a girl in Liberia named Patience though. As well as a boy named Teddy Bear and a newborn named Surprise!)

I also like nature names such as Ocean(a), Poppy, Iris, Sage, etc.
Happy Naming!

Ack, someone else thought of Keziah.

Girls, Katarina, Kassandra, Kylie, Kyra

Boys, Michael (I know...but it IS one of my favorites...hubby hates it), Jakob, Arron, Brent, Caleb, Douglas, Dillon, Nathan, Phillip. Actually Phillip was a backup name in case the sonogram was wrong.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't be able to handle the stress of not knowing the name. Our names were picked and then confirmed at the sonogram. (1st - Justin or Kalena; 2nd - Melody....boys name was going to be Joshua but his name just came to us at the sonograms office when we found out it was a boy Joseph-James. Middle name for boy was always going to be Wolf; 3rd - Elizabeth or Phillip).

Thanks for this! I love coming up with names!

I've always loved the name Abigail. In the Bible she was both beautiful and wise...exactly what I would wish for in a daughter. Abigail Grace. The Grace of God is exactly what helps me each and every day!

For a boy, hmmmm...I've already used up many of my fav names...so what do you think about the following: Austin, Noah or Christian. I just love the sound of the first two and Christian has been a fav since the audio version of Pilgrim's Progress.

I've noticed alot of Americans like to give their children surnames as first names, is that usually to keep a family name going or because they like the sound of them? I love the whole business of naming a child. I really feel that it is like speaking a prophetic word over their life, so I think its a wasted opportunity to give a child a name that doesn't mean anything. Our background is Irish and I have 4 boys. I would love to have a girl just so I could call her Honor, what a beautiful name, its meaning is clear and its so full of dignty, and timeless too. If you're interested, the 4 I have are Brendan ( after his dad, and because St Brendan was the navigator, which seemed appropriate for the eldest child ) Dominic (Belonging to the Lord) Gabriel ( Strong man of God) and lastly my little Colmcille. It is pronounced columkill, but there aren't any "K's" in Irish and I think the Irish spelling is beautiful ( Anyway my family would disown me if I "phoneticised" it!).
It means "Little dove of the church" St Colmcille brought the Gospel to Scotland. When my Colmcille was born he cooed like a dove before his body was even out, he just looked around and went "ooo ooo". He arrived very gently, at home in my bedroom, and honestly, he was like a little dove ever since, the name just fiited him so well. We have a song for him, it goes " O Colmcille, my little dove, I love you with a big big love, you're sweet you're sweet, to the tip of your feet, from the top of your lovely head" I think its lovely to use names that reflect something of your heritage. I love the names you chose for your children!

You just hit on my favorite subject. Names. My children are all named from Bible Names and their middle names are after special people in our lives. I also feel God named all the children as some of the names we chose were names I previously hated. My daughter was named Mary-Elizabeth Joy, which means made strong by God. This name was chosen very early in my pregnancy buy I found it very fitting when she was born with lung problems and needed to be sent to a differant hospital. After I lost my last daughter, God gave me the name of my next girl, whenever she may come. It is AnnaGrace Hope. My favorite boys names are Christopher, Michael, Isaiah, Jonas and Silas. My daughter likes the name Aleah. God bless your beautiful baby.

I wanted to name my last boy Jackson, but couldn't because I didn't want to introduce my husband and him to other people - this is Michael and Jackson.... heheh I also liked Jaxtyn. And Elijah & Isaiah. For a girl I LOVE the name Emma and Abigal. My husband has always wanted a Cambria, but there is a Cameron in the family, so that's out.
You could find out what name means "sixth" and name the baby that. I new a 10th child named Decima. We thought about naming our third boy Seth - he's a third son, but didn't. We didn't decide on a name until the night before we had Baby B. I was hoping he would turn into a girl and we would name her Molly - heheheh...

The *best* name for a boy is Reagan *grin*
We named our baby that after the president. His name is Reagan Bennett L______ , which means "blessed little king".

Oh, we have a Gabrielle too (Gaby). We also have an Adrienne who we call (Addy), and a Miette (means small sweet thing) who we call Mimi.

Shane is a nice first name, but can't be shortened to 3 letters.

We call Reagan "Reg" (pronounced with a hard "g", not a "j" sound)

I love looking for baby names! You are due much soon than I (sniff, sniff), but we have a tentative girl's name and no boy name. I am convinced we are having a girl and the last ultrasound pointed in that direction. We will find out for sure next week. Our first dd, is Kennedy Harper. This one will be Aubrey Raigan.
Funny that your dh feels like he has plenty of time left, my SIL's dh thought the same and wouldn't give her an answer on names. Their son was born 2 weeks ago, 8 weeks early, he had to make a quick decision, lol.
Anyway, about your baby ... here are the girl names that I like:

Danica (slavic/hebrew) morning star
Kamilia (slavic) sweet flower -- could be shortened to Kami, or Mia
Vera (latin/slavic) latin meaning is true, slavic meaning is faith ... true faith :)

vera is my favorite :)

Boy Names

Asher (hebrew) lucky, blessed, happy
Lucius (latin) light --- this is one of the boy names i had picked for us
Thaddeus (greek) courageous

Lucius is my favorite :)

We too have a Gabrielle. I was actually going to suggest that.
I love the meaning- God is my strength.
Anyway- how about Michelle, Rochelle (means little rock), or Danielle to keep the double L going for girl names. Grace is a favorite of mine too. That would put another G name. Noticing there is already 2 J's and 2 I's... hmmm.
For boys... Nathan, Justin - spelled Justyn or Juztin etc...
Three other names that I love for boys are Colton (Cole for short) , Levi, and Dustin.
They sound so tough. lol
O.k. I'm done now.

Hey there!
I agree- naming kids is tough. I really care about what they mean- I'll share my kids names b/c i like them so much. My older son is named Samuel. I adore that name and recommend it. My youndestson is Asher. This was a name that people turned thier noses up at while I was pregnant, but now that he is here and adorable I get so many compliments on it. It means happy and blessed- and strangers tell me all the time what a happy baby he is. :)

I am pregnant with my third and its looking like a boy. I like Tucker Andrew or Zion Andrew. I think those names are great! I like Isaac too- but you already have that. Although Tucker means nothing- means "one who tucks cloth" ew. oh well- i like how it looks and sounds.

for a girl I love Ocean. I know it's a little bizarre but we love it. My parents beg me not to name a girl that, but it's so different when there is an adorable little one to tote the name around. Makes all the difference.

I also really like Ava Elizabeth and Ahava Grace.

Those are my awesome contributions- if you ever get a chance- pop on in and let me know what you think of my 2- Zion or Tucker ! :)

just wondering if you had decided on names yet? i saw that your baby is breech. that is too bad, but there is still plenty of time for it to move. my brother was not breech until the day before my mom had him ... it could move the day before. i know a c-section is not what you want, but having been there, it really is ok. don't worry about what happened in missey's case. having to have a repeat c-section i was worried about that as well and so i did some research. from what i have read not only is it very rare, but it is even more rare in c-sections than natural child birth. anyways, i am praying for you. update us on the naming challenge

Too many comments to read, so I figured I would just give you our kids names:

Benaiah Luke (Ben-i-ah: He was one of David's mighty men) - we call him Ben
Aaron David - not really shortened...
Ivan Anatole (not exactly Biblical, but Ivan is Russian for John!) - He gets called Ivy or Boo-boo
Naomi Grace - she gets called Nome
Micah Jack - he gets called Mic, Mickey, Michelob..teehee...

With this next one, dh is being really picky, so we will see what he comes up with. We know we are having another boy.
