• Friday, May 5, 2006 - SHARE and Tell: Pregnancy Cravings

So I'm curious... being EXTREMELY pregnant right now... how's about a little "share and tell"?...

SHARE and Tell:
  • What strange cravings did you have when you were (are) pregnant?
This should be fun... plus, it might help me recover from my own weird pregnancy "addiction"... a;lskdjf;alskdjf;asldkfj.  I had something I craved with each one (oranges... like five at a sitting, baby shrimp, bomb pops... like six or seven at night before bed and of course, crushed ice, but the one that is weird is...
RUBBER BANDS!

How's that for weird?  Seriously... I chew on a rubber band until it begins to fall apart.  I'm not sure what it is (and it has to be a certain kind)... but I'm craving the taste!  Yes, I'm taking my vitamins, so there shouldn't be something that I'm missing from my diet...

So come on ladies... help me feel better and tell me your weird cravings... PLEASE!
In Him,
Amy

Oh I've had a few weird ones. My most healthy one was baby carrots. I could eat them like candy. My unhealthy one was cheeseburgers. McDonald's ones. With both my girls I craved cheeseburgers, sometimes sending my poor husband at 11:30 pm to get me one (or two)...

a friend of mine is craving milk - like crazy, drinking litres of it every day (that would be gallons for the americans!!)

I've had a few. With my oldest, it was mexican food and orange juice. I could drink a half gallon container in a day, easy. Talk about heartburn!! With my boy, I craved red meat, the rarer, the better. I even grossed out my husband with the rareness of the meat I ate. During the course of my latest pregnancy, I ate two entire family sized bags of frozen french fries. Weird.

But never, ever rubber bands. :)

With my last child it was Mexican food. I couldn't get enough of it. I can't remember with my other two. I think my first was ice cream on a cone from a certain place here in town.

Watermelon. I swear I ate 1/2 a watermelon every night. My DH ate the other half.

By the way, our library had "Walk the Walk!" I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Near the end of my pregnancy with DS I had heartburn really bad at night. I would wake up, and get up, and the only thing that helped was a chunk of cheese and a glass of milk. I put on a couple of pounds those last few weeks (although I didn't gain more than 20lbs total with either of them), and I think it all went to him.

With DD, I had horrible nausea and vomiting. The consistent trigger (as in every time I ate it, I threw up) was green peppers. The only thing that consistently stayed down (I used to throw up basic meat and potatoes dinners), was Indian curry. Fortunately DH cooks a great curry, and as I worked out and he worked at home at that time, he cooked for me.

Other than those things--Oh there was string cheese too. Now I can't stand it.--I can't really remember any cravings.

By the way, the only food DD really does NOT like? Green peppers!

Thinking of you in these final days of this pregnancy!

rubberbands???
girl, have you seen your doctor?
mine were different with each.
#1 was Pizza Hut pizza, light sauce, only cheese (he loves it the same way). everything else was an adversion to food. and he doesn't like much food.
#2 was Double Cheeseburgers from McDonalds and yes, he loves cheeseburgers
#3...can't remember.
#4....anything that walked, mooed, crowed, hissed, grew from a tree, fell from the sky or anything else....and yes. she's a eater!!!!

but rubberbands?....
oh my!!!

I craved popcorn trhoughout the pregnancy and all the time I nursed my son. Unfortunately, I am a very talented popcorn burner. My husband made the popcorn, and it got to where when I smiled a certain way, he would head for the popcorn popper.

With two of my pregnancies I craved Comet. I really wanted to eat it all the time. I replaced that desire by eating baking soda and brushing my teeth with it. I had the cleanest mouth in the south for a very long time.

I had thought of a pickle pizza with this pregnancy a few times but didn't try it.

I kept expecting something, it is a rite of passage during that time right? But no, not for me. Although with my last child I could NOT eat broccoli. My gut blew up like a balloon before I even finished the meal. I couldn't bring myself to even try it again until she was almost a year old.

Thanks for checking in. I'm still a bit behind, but I'm okay with it. My school room cleaning is really me moving into our school room and unpacking boxes of school stuff that are still in the garage. The computer room is waiting for me to move stuff out so my husband can move his stuff in. So it is hover mode in there, but that is alright. I'm doing what I can and moving on. Tomorrow is devoted to the backyard as we are preparing it to plant grass seed.

All things in God's time. Keeping you in prayers.

With my first it was tacos!!! I would go get them from Del Taco or Jack-in-the-box and get them and put the wrappers in the very bottom of the trash can so my husband wouldn't see them and rat me out to the doctor. By the way, it is her favorite food.

With my second, Italian food, and yes her favorite food is pasta!

With my last, my son, beef and more beef, and anything that wasn't nailed down. His favorite food, hamburgers. Do you see a pattern? I just can't call it a fluke!

I've had different cravings with different kids, but the most frustrating one was my craving for a chicken sandwich from a place in FL. My husband never drove the 20 hours to get me one, can you believe him?

Nothing so grand as rubber bands but.......even before I knew I was expecting I craved pancakes..... no butter or syrup. Anything else made me physically ill. After the first pregnancy I knew that I was because of the intense pancake craving. I ate them for the entire time...and absolutly nothing else would stay down.
Now I have a precious little grandson who would be perfectly happy if his mommy would let him eat nothing but pancakes!!

I dont remember any unusual cravings during my pregnancies but I do remember that things smelled differently. For example: fish was the worse smell on earth (I love fish but I had to avoid it), but the strangest thing was that ammonia smelled like peppermint candy. I'm surprised me and my daughters dont have brain damage from sniffing the bottle.

My sister-in-law's mother craved tar when she was expecting. She didnt eat it, just chewed on it. That should make you feel better about the rubberbands.

Actually I've read that it is completely normal for pregnant women to crave things like laundry detergent, dirt, styrofoam, RUBBER BANDS.... etc. But I also read that if you're eating dirt -- you should probably tell your dr.! LOL Hope it makes you feel better that it is a normal oddity during pregnancy!

With me:

#1 McDonald's french fries
#2 Chocolate Ice cream
#3 Slushees and starbursts

With my first pregnancy I recall watching Friends or something and someone was drinking a martini with an olive in it and I had to have a green olive right then. I wanted my hubby to go get some at the store for me...I can't remember if he did or not. I do remember driving around the suburbs looking for a 7-11 or something so I could get a slushy at 11 p.m. with my DH. We couldn't find slushies anywhere! Now we know that some movie theaters have them and now Target has them too!!! I also remember craving bean burritos from Taco Bell and Pink Lemonade. Oh!!! I was in heaven for the 2 minutes it took me to eat that! Those cravings continued throughout my 3 pregnancies. The list grew to Clementines...all mexican food and smelling citrus lotion from Bath and Body works. It helped the morning sickiness! LOL!!! Oh and I almost forgot...tomato juice! I couldn't get enough of it!!! All 3 of my kids love everything I craved..except the olives. :)

With my first child I ate Tuna with pickles and tomatoes EVERYDAY!

With this one I want Edy Whole Fruit bars Coconut. I ate three of them for lunch the other day. Although early in the pregnancy all I wanted was chips and hot salsa. Big switch, hunh?

I have learned with this pregnancy that Claussen pickles stop heartburn! I don't know if it is like 'fighting fire with fire' but I do know that it has helped me tons!

BTW, strange cravings like bleach and rubberbands sounds like PICA. It is generally not abnormal but you should not give in to the cravings.
