• Monday, May 29, 2006 - Update from Our Household

So things have been absolutely nuts here, but we're finding our way to our "normal craziness"slowly but surely.  a;lsdkfja;slkdfj;aslkdjf

I'm planning on doing school this summer for the first time, so I've been getting all that ready (on top of everything else going on).  I love choosing curriculum, but it's been a little hectic lately, so even though I've been enjoying it... it's been stressful too.  The devotion for this week reminded me that "less is best" and I'm trying to remember that as I look and find so many wonderful things for homeschool.

So, who else homeschools year 'round, and when do you take breaks?  I'm hoping that this will be a good thing for our family.  I'm finding that with the new baby, we're needing to get back to a schedule, and with a newborn that sleeps, it will be easier to do school now... that way if I have to take a break in a few months, I can without "getting behind".  So I'm getting a schedule ready too and will be making posts about that on A CLEAN HEART Blog soon.

Speaking of baby, he's doing great.  Tonight was the first night we really heard him cry... his stomach was upset (I'm not sure what I ate that was bad for him) but we finally got him calmed down.  I was amazed at how chaotic it got when he started crying... my two youngest ones lost their minds and got into so much trouble.  I was stressed from listening to the baby while holding him, and the older ones were trying to help, but it was pretty crazy.  Poor little one... I felt so bad for him.  I hope he'll sleep through the night.  He's been waking up a couple of times, but I have to confess... in cherishing these passing moments, he's been sleeping with hubby and me.  I started putting him in the cradle the beginning of the week (he'd been sleeping with us all night before that), but now he starts out in the cradle and I bring him into the bed to nurse and just leave him there.  I know that I'll have to stop soon... but I really am savoring these first few weeks... they just go by too fast.

The kids are doing well too... however, we're really working on 5.G.3(almost 4) and 6.B.2... they're probably having the hardest time adjusting.  It's interesting because we didn't have that with the other kids when a new baby came home.  Just different personalities.  The "heart" issues are needing to be dealt with.  "BOOT CAMP" will definitely be in full swing soon (which will also be moving over to A CLEAN HEART Blog).

Well, I need to get going... I hear a little man calling...
In Him,
Amy

We are going through things now as our rooms get back to order. We are in our bedroom, dd is in her PINK room, and ds is for the time being holed up in there as well while he awaits his room changes. He decided sleeping on the floor was better than sleeping under a pink coverlet.

Your post was timely indeed, I have about 1 week to get through the rest of the children's items before our semiannual giveaway at church. I already have a huge box ready to go, and I'm sure there is more. I pray as I go to make wise choices.

Kisses for the wee one, and rest for you. Blessings.

•Monday, May 29, 2006 - Love year rounding!

Posted by gabalot
It really works well for us to be on a year round schedule. We officially finished our year last Friday and won't begin our next year until mid July. We school lighter in the summer to allow for trips to the beach and time with friends who are in school. Most of all it allows us the freedom to have Thanksgiving to New Year's off and I wouldn't trade that. I just truly believe that a break longer than six weeks or so makes it so much harder to get back into the rythm of a school schedule. I just can't see spending 4-6 weeks reviewing, it seems like such a waste to me.

•Tuesday, May 30, 2006 - we sort of all year round school

Posted by tbird
it is only a sort of all year round though! Basically we keep on with the story hour all the time, dd even insists taht books go camping with us! She is only 5 though and an only 1 and sees "school" as entertainment most of the time. We take breaks from puzzle books when ever we need to as I don't feel that the written side of things is important at this age. We definitely don't run to a schedule as yet although nominally our school year starts in September along with the school kids

Hi Amy -
I couldn't agree more about the baby and having him, in my case her, with you sleeping. It's such a bonding time those first 6 to 8 weeks for sure.
We homeschool yr around. I only homeschool 1 daughter but, if we did not keep doing "school" throughout the summer, it would takes months to get her back on track!! A friend of mine advised me, homeschool 45 days, 15 off, consistently. We may give that a try, i don't know.

We are planning to school through the summer this year. I haven't done it in the past, but I felt like we needed the structure this year. It will be light, mostly reading and math and some read alouds.

I haven't had time to blog much lately, so I didn't know about your new little one till now. Congratulations! He's beautiful!

Hi Amy-
We school year around. We take a break in July for 2 wks. and during the summer we do just the basics. We take time off during the year like Christmas and whenever things are getting to hectic or we need a change. I am thinking about schooling Mon., Tues. and have Wed. for cleaning then schooling Thur. and Fri. I'm not sure yet. Maybe I'll blog about it ;)

I'll get back to you on that Rocket Phonics.
Blessings,
Linda<><

We don't normally school year round but it makes sense b/c you can take breaks throughout the year and the kids need less time for review. My oldest daughter (going into 9th) will be finishing up her Pre-Algebra through the summer. She keeps asking me if she can start Sonlight (for history and reading) so we may start that soon. Enjoy your new blessing. I miss that sweet new baby smell! ( No, not the dirty diapers)

I remember with my first DC, we didn't put him down the first 2 weeks. Oh, what a sweet time. It sounds like you are cherishing every moment. We are taking a break to move, but will start school back up mid-July. I'm going to work on a year round schedule, maybe altered a bit during summer months, but still plugging along!

You are making me long to snuggle with my babies. They are much too big now for that.

This year we are going to try school all year. We are going to pare down our days and stretch them out so it is a more relaxed atmosphere. We'll be starting July 1. I'm getting the prep work together now to get our timing worked out. We also have always done a 4 day school week leaving the extra day for field trips, etc.
Blessings,
Amanda

Ha! I love it - girl after my own heart. My fourth (and youngest) "started out" sleeping with us, and guess where he still is? They're just SO cuddly!

Praying for the 2 young ones who hold a special place in my heart as do all your children. Adjusting to a new one can be difficult. Praying that you and Mike are able to discern what they need and how best to help them adjust. Praying also that the older ones can be a help in pulling things together for a smoother transition to a family of 9. Love you all.

Since this will be my first year HS, I am going to start this summer, my boys just get too bored! I am going to be using Konos and we are going to start with attentiveness. We are looking forward to it!

b/c it's so hot around here that I need something to keep them busy. We take the whole time from Thanksgiving week thru New Year's off and a few weeks off in the spring. It also gives me some flexibility to take some "mental health days" when the teacher needs it.

•Friday, June 2, 2006 - year round school

Posted by akabain
We have pretty much schooled year-round since we started 5 years ago. At first we did it because dh took Mondays off from his job (he was preaching then) and we would use that time to do our shopping, errands and field trips. It also worked because we travel alot (visit relatives, go to homeschool conventions everywhere, travel for dh's job, etc). Plus, day to day life just happens and we get behind.

"Summer school" is a little different than the rest of the year. When we finish a subject it just drops out of the schedule, plus we only school until lunch and then do art or whatever in the afternoons.

At first I tried to take a week break every 3 or 4 weeks, but sometimes that didn't mesh with travel plans or something else, so now we just break whenever. :O) I do try to take two weeks off near the fall start-up to clean out and get the new stuff ready.

Have fun with it!
hugs,amy:O)
