• Thursday, March 9, 2006 - Boot Camp - Pray & Make A Schedule: Part I

PRAY FIRST...

The next step in BOOT CAMP is to make a schedule.  Now, some of you may literally break out in hives at the thought of a "schedule"... but if it's one thing I've learned, it's that when you fail to plan, you plan to fail... meaning that everyone has some sort of schedule.  You wake up, you eat, you brush your teeth, you get dressed, you (or your husband) pay bills, you get the mail, you go to church, you pay taxes, ect. In your life, there are things that require your attention at given points throughout the day, month, or year.  To each of these things, you set aside time to accomplish these things to make sure they get done or there will be consequences (especially on the bills!).  Certainly our children are the most important things we have been given charge over.  Planning time for the things that NEED to be accomplished in their lives is crucial... especially for the homeschool mom.  We set the pace.

Now, there are those who follow a very precise schedule, while others are more comfortable with a relaxed goal.  I've tried both ways, and for my family, a "precise goal" seems to be the best.  You see, when I've tried to have a "precise schedule", I've gotten frustrated when I've gotten behind or when "life" happened and everything fell apart.  Likewise, when I had a "relaxed plan" I found that when too much time was allowed for "free time", I spent more time breaking up arguments than getting anything worth while accomplished and I was even more frustrated!

With a "precise goal" I am still precise (definite, defined, clear-cut, specific) with what is to be accomplished, but I'm also reminded that it is just a goal (aspiration, target, intention, objective) that leaves room for the Lord to plan my day as He sees fit.

OOOOOOOOOOOOO... did you just cringe?  Yes, I did just say that!  In making any kind of a schedule you still MUST be willing to allow the Lord to plan your day.  This will take daily prayer, as well as total submission.  Every day you will need to surrender yourself, your plans, your children, and your day to Him.

I have a magnet on my fridge with a prayer I wrote (nothing like a little slap on the face from yourself every now and then right? ) to remind me every day what's truly important...  (For those who would be interested in getting one of these... please email me.)

...THEN BEGIN TO MAKE A SCHEDULE

Okay... so you've prayed and surrendered, right?  Before you go any further, you have to know that if you haven’t done the surrender part, then forget going on any further with this, cuz you're missin' the whole point!  If you're unwilling for the Lord to mold your heart, how do you expect to be able to tend to the hearts of your children?!  Spend time in prayer until you've reached the point where you completely understand that you are the Lord's to do with what He wills, and that while you may be the “mamma” of the house, it is the Lord who is the Heavenly Father to those children you love so dearly, and it was Him who gave you those precious lives to take care of.

To begin making a schedule, it’s important to think “big picture”.  This has always been an area of struggle for me in particular, because I’m a “detail person”.  Details are important, and we’ll get to that, but for now you must THINK BIG PICTURE!  The reason I emphasize that so, is because I believe the majority of disorganized homeschool moms are disorganized because they are detail people.  This is a wonderful attribute on many levels, but unfortunately, isn’t helpful when trying to create order in your homes.  Detail people get caught up and spend too much time on one thing trying to get it right (or worse… “perfect”) and as a result, loose control over their entire home and get overwhelmed (yes, I’m speaking from experience and my husband has pictures to prove it!).  If you are a detail person, pray for the Lord to help you to see His big picture and for you to be flexible!

To begin to restore order in your home, you need to take steps to make a schedule that creates "harmony" with God's plan for you and your family!  This will not necessarily be easy for everyone.  I have struggled with this since I began homeschooling 5 years ago.  The MOST important thing to remember is to lean on the Lord for guidance and peace (“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)).

STEP 1:  PRAY! PRAY! PRAY!

PRAY! (I know that sounds so simple, but if you don’t continually seek His guidance, you won’t be completely sure of what the Lord is telling you to do.  You MUST have a relationship with Him and talk with and listen to Him throughout your day in order to know what His plans are for you and your family.)

STEP 2:   Make a “NEED To” List

Make a list of everything that must be accomplished… not what YOU want to get done, but what NEEDS to get done.   If you choose to use my “NEED To” List, then you’ll divide everything into three subjects of HOME, SCHOOL, and ACTIVITIES.

Some things to include in HOME would be: alone time with the Lord (if you don’t schedule this you may not find the time… this is definitely a NEED to thing!), breakfast, lunch, supper, laundry (be sure to put down “laundry” for each load you do in a day), and shower for you.

If you’re home has “fallen behind” and clutter is taking over, be sure to add that to your HOME list as well.  I knew that I needed to have a section of time to clean in order to keep my home in working order.  I’d also fallen behind in the laundry room and the kids’ closets.  In making a time that I knew I would get to each thing, I felt better about them being that way for the time being, knowing that eventually I would get to them and still keep my schedule working.  I would also suggest that while you’re making your list that you take a week to get as much picking up done in your home that you need (call in help from the kids for this) so that when you begin your schedule the following week, you can at least function.  (This is great if this doesn’t apply to you, but I, for one had an overwhelming task ahead of me and knew there was some cleaning issues that needed to be taken care of first and I did that during the week of planning my schedule.)

In the SCHOOL list, keep in mind that if you have more than one child to list them separately when appropriate and together whenever that applies.  For example, if two of your children are doing phonics together, but one isn’t, be sure to put “phonics – Sue and Beth” on the list as well as “lang. arts – Jim” (you are trying to keep this as easy as possible so group whenever you can).  This may also apply to certain chores (my girls clean up their room together, as do the boys) and would be put under the HOME list.  Do this for as many things as possible.  This will help keep the “big picture” for now.

For the ACTIVITIES list, remember any recurring things throughout your week (such as AWANA, church, any sports activities, music lessons, ect.)  To get you started and give you an idea of how to get it all started, feel free to refer to my “NEED To” List as an example, but please remember: this is your schedule for your home, so you need to seek what the Lord wants for you!

Take your time on this if you need to.  When I did this, I sat down and wrote out a lot of “NEED to” things that were obvious, but throughout the following days, I kept the list handy.  When I remembered something that needed to get done that wasn’t getting done, I wrote it down and continued to pray for the Lord to show me what He wanted me to accomplish.

Another thing to remember in making your list is; this is a list for NOW!  This isn’t about what you’d like to see happen… this is what NEEDS to happen NOW!  You’re taking the steps to get a schedule going in your home that will work right away (with the exception of a little trial and error).  For those of us who seem to be in a constant state of change (having a child, nursing, or in the in-between stages), you must accept the fact that your schedule is going to change a lot over time, and may have to be revamped in a few months when the little one takes only one nap instead of two, ect.  Embrace those changes, for they are your life!  Don’t get frustrated.  These steps are easily changed as your life requires.  For the time being, just focus on NOW!

There is no need to prioritize this list… that comes next.  For now, you are just seeking what the Lord wants.  This is a good time to evaluate your curriculum choices as well as any extra curricular activities or chores you are involved in.  For me it was a time to decide what I was going to use first.  I have to confess; I am a “curriculum junkie” and have so many good things that have gone untouched.  I had become overwhelmed with trying to get it all done and not doing anything well.  I really needed to decide what I was going to start with, and then put the rest of the stuff away until I finish the first things!  The list was the first step in making me feel better about our school, knowing that with a reasonable layout, we could get one thing done at a time, and eventually get to the other things after that.  (You could also have a Yearly Planning Form at the beginning of each year that will help you in this area as well, but we're taking care of the present for now.)

Remember to keep this list as general as possible and with only the NEEDED things!  I’ve included a sample of my list in the beginning stages.  As you will find out (in the next post), the next step will be more of what you'd like to happen, and then we will be combining the lists and putting them into time frames.  THEN we will begin working more on the details.  For now, just try to think “BIG PICTURE”!

May God guide you through these first couple of steps, until the next post!

In Him,
Amy

I am very pleased with the way things are going and thus far I cant imagine changing anything.. but let's remember it's only preschool.

Kaylee is asking how to spell words, sometimes she makes up words and wants to know how to spell them. She sings the alphabet song but not necessarily in the correct order. She can count to 10 and recognises most colors. She enjoys "reading" and most importantly she knows God.

...I am a little concerned about K-5 next year. Right now, with four toddlers really, I can get them all involved witht he activites and just let them do it at thier own level. Next year, when my oldest starts doing more advanced and specific activites, I am concerned about juggling all of it with keeping the littles happy and stimulated.

God is working on me with this and I am printing out you Boot Camp to start and get it all down. Iknow that He will show me the way He has for me, so I just need to PRAY!

Thank youa gain for your great encouragement and insight : )

We are really enjoying Mystery of History and Exploring God's Creation through Astronomy. Those are our favorites this year. I believe that August will bring big changes in our school. After 4 years of avoiding textbooks, I'm caving in. With our growing family, I think it will take alot of stress off of me.

I am enjoying using AO, and the charlotte mason approach. We have been reading books like crazy! I am having a hard time with the narration part, but hopefully the more we do it, the better it will get. We have been reading about Leif Ericson recently, and today we found a picture of a viking ship, shrunk it down, and printed a few of them out. Then I had the kids glue the ships onto our big world map so we can track Leifs journey to America. I am the kind of person that always thinks creative and cost effective ways to approach the lessons. Lately I have taken some transparancy sheets, and clipped them to the worksheets in the kids' math books. Then I let them use dry erase pens to do their work. It is fun for the kids, and makes the books reusable! yay! I am loving what we are doing. It is such a refreshing way to homeschool. The old boxed curriculum...HAD to go!

Hello! I have seen your name on so many blogs I've visited and thought I'd stop by to see what it was all about. You have a wonderful website and I can see why people visit. It's neat to see you're from MN too! I love it here! Anyhooo, I just started my blog recently and am looking for sites to visit frequently for insight and inspiration. I would like to add you to my friends list and I will definately be visiting again! I really enjoyed your exhortation about priorities and being organized. I completely agree w/you on letting the Lord actually BE the Lord in all areas of your life. Continual surrender is hard but soooo neccessary! His plans are so much more than what we could ever think up! I just recently married MY best friend and my DD12-Kayla and I started homeschooling the end of this last school year. Sooo, we are very new to this whole 'new life' and path God is leading us down! It is so fabulously exciting though! I LOVE God's plan for our lives so far. I can hardly imagine(or wait to see) where they will lead next! Thanks for the inspiration again!

Hi Amy,

Our year is going really well in some areas. I cannot believe how quickly and successfully my DD5 is learning her letters and some simple words. That's very encouraging. And, my DS10 who has had a really hard time with spelling, is finally using a program (Spelling Power) that is truly working. So, that's very exciting too. My DD12 is very motivated and loves to learn, so she is having a good year.

On the other hand, it's our first year and we're still trying to get our footing. I will definitely be making some changes in curriculum next year. And, the whole scheduling issue is making me nuts. I like your strategy of specifying a goal rather than a precise schedule. That would work much better for our family. I'm going to shift my perspective somewhat in that department.

Thanks for the reminder to surrender DAILY. That's SO important.

Blessings,
Courtney

I saw your name on another blog and visited. You are an answer to how I was feeling a day ago.
It was all falling apart! - the house that is. School is happening I don't know how. We have been schooling 6 months and I have dropped so much of the formal book work - it was way above her head. Now we are just doing a bit of writing and language work - I need to remember to cut it down to only 15min max. The rest of our learning is all reading books and lapbooking from them. We are learning heaps. Maths we are waiting for the Maths-U-See to come.
Thanks for your encoraging blog I will be stopping back to see what to do next!

•Thursday, March 9, 2006 - Doing better than ever, but still need improving.

Posted by EEEEMommy
I appreciated your comments on scheduling as I am a very non-routine, unscheduled person. I know that I need to become more routine, but I tend to go to the other extreme and become exasperated when we can't stay on track with a precise schedule. I've been trying to work toward a happy medium.

Some good things: I'm on track (academically) with my oldest, the kids love learning and do well in our relaxed environment, they have wonderful relationships with eachother, all my tweaking of curriculum is finally begining to come together to something that's really working, we've done some really good things with Bible and spiritual learning (any of the Miller books & Joni Earekson Tada's Hymns for a Kids' Heart) and my husband is leading devotions (reading straight from Matthew) every day/night, we've also found natural ways to be mindful of God while doing other academic subjects like Math, Phonics and Grammar.

Areas that need improvement: I'm about a month behind schedule with my 1st grade daughter, I haven't done as much Scripture memory as I had hoped simply because I haven't had a plan, I want to do more read-alouds, we still haven't done Science at all (looking to do one of Jeannie Fulbright's Apologia for next year), I need to get a plan together for housework and meals and figure out how to incorporate the kids into that so they're learning life skills and can hopefully avoid growing up to be "messies" like me!

Oops, I took to long to write...I need to get my son to basketball!

Thanks again!

This year, is, like all of our other years, is not what I had intended, but it will do.
I always seem to start out with huge goals and expectations, and always seem to fall back into a laid back, almost unschooling approach. On one hand it may be a good thing that I'm letting go of some of my very strong type A personality traits (classic opinionated overachiever... :-( but on the other hand, it my just be my laziness getting the upper hand. I walk a fine line sometimes between blissful success and dismal failure...
All in all, they're learning something most days, and they're turning out to be pretty good kids. So it's going well enough! I love my kids, and I want them to love each other, to love their dad and me, and most of all to love the Lord.

I created a new schedule recently and that has really helped us to stay on top of things. I really like how math and Latin are going. I think those are our favorite subjects right now. Phonics -- well, we're glad to be finally done with those! At the end it was just soooo boring! :)

Despite two pregnancies in one school year and having a middle of the year lull, we are back into almost full gear. I think we will slide into homeplate with a bang! I guess what has helped is focusing on what our goals are for next year. We can't accomplish them without getting this year's goals finished.
I'd say the most fun we have had this year is with Mystery of History and SOW.
I just recieved Mystery of History II for next year and it's almost twice as thick! Anyway, it'll all run fun I know.
Now that I am in the second trimester with this wee one I am gaining back my zeal and energy. I truly feel that the motivation and mood of the home depends a lot on Mom.

•Friday, March 10, 2006 - I want a magnet too *laugh*

Posted by ChathamMommy
I want to buy a magnet if I don't win one. Want to start a home-business? :D

My homeschool year is going well unless I look at my old goals. I thought, after having a baby in September, that we could do first grade full-force with a preschooler and todller in the house, too. Add to that moving in back in May, having family here intermittently for a LOT of last year, various little illnesses... hey we're WAY off the old plan.

But, you know what? We are doing well. We're only halfway through math, but my son started the year a grade level ahead, so who cares? We're slightly ahead on spelling. We finished the handwriting book. Yes, we've been a bit lax on history and science, but we will do more of those when we don't have little hands wanting to blow up the volcano before it's made (or to eat the sugar cubes that make up our igloo right after we take a picture of it).

My schedule needs some work, but my heart is already getting a good makeover, so I'm going to worry more about the heart and less about the schedule. I'm wayyyy into details anyway.

Happy Friday!

This is great Amy. Thank you for being a great encourager. I am amazed that you can keep juggling all these and tend to forget that you are almost due with number 7. Do you know if you are going to have a girl or boy?

When God made you, He put in more love,
For all the children you would bear.
When God made you, He put in more strength,
For all the friends you would have.
When He made you, He smiled a lot,
For the impact you would make on lives,
When He made you, He put in all the extras,
And I thank Him for you.

Have a wonderful day. God bless you.

How is homeschooling going. Well we are just starting out. It is going great but is about to get better. I become a stay at home mother in 3 weeks! For now I work full time so fitting school in is on a when I have time basis.

My daughter is amazing. Each night we do bible with Five Min. Devotions and she answers me the questions.

We work on Early birth Math but have hit a snag of she just is not comprehending something. So I am going to review what we went over and save this step for a little bit later.

Everything else is slow going but we are just learning to get things down pat. It is all fun for now. Fun and learning. The way I hope we can keep it.

My daughter just started Kindergarten this year and we are really behind. I am finally getting into the swing of things!!! We are using Sonlight this year, which is o.k, but next year I am going more towards the classical approach. And one of the most important parts of next year....is that I am going to plan my own schedule. I think if I put it together I will be able to follow it easier....some parts of Sonlight make me feel as if I am just going through the motions of school and not really learning anything?!?!?

Oh, my, hmmm...I'll start with the positive! DD is doing wonderfully with her phonics, writing and math...I can't keep up with her. She wakes up in the a.m. and give me a list of what she wants to "study today" - here's an example, "Today let's study bats, how they make shoes, and volcanoes". At dinner, there will be another list. Am struggling with DS13 - when he applies himself and takes school halfway seriously, he is exceptional. But, he can be so busy trying to be a wiseguy 13 yo. Drives DH and me nuts. DH spends a lot of time together doing guy stuff, hoping that will help him move past some of this. It just has been frustrating at times to plan things and his attitude makes it so we can't even get started. I have tried to focus my Bible mediations on this...looking for guidance on taking the right course of action and saying the right words. But, when he isn't in one of his "teenager moods" (as I call them), we have a great time. I am very pleased with his progress in VideoTextAlgebra. He took the SAT as part of a 7th grade SAT program...he did well given his age and the amount of math he has yet to do tha was on the test. So, that's our year so far in a nutshell!

Aagh!! WELL... God in His grace is teaching me much, showing me to let go of much, and showing me how to find my priorities... so far I have about 3 hours of the day scheduled... and it has helped immensely...

KUDOS to my Kindergartner... he taught himself to read last summer... before we started the bought curriculum... so we consistently get in Bible time and Math... I am going through the phonics stuff, so that he knows why he can read all those books... but he is in the second grade stuff, so not too worried how often we get to it... once or twice a week.

I teach piano, lead worship and have host a home church... BUT since my hubby just graduated from nursing school, life has gotten much less chaotic! And next year, I am THINK I am going to get a curriculum that tells me what to do each day, in short chunks that Boy can see and tick off. He needs routine and lists, and I have not met that need of his too well!

this was good. yep, i'm one. i hate schedules, plans, goals. i get sick to my stomach. yuck. BUT i've realized i must get over myself for what's best for the family,my kids and our lives. my husband is the manager and the planner. schedules freak me out because if i don't keep them i get freaked out. goals are better.
i'm a recovering schedule hater. so this week we've begun an earnest effort to get chores done after breakfast, begin school, finish school and then have the rest of the day for fun and other things. i'm trying the 15 minute (or so) on each thing right now and concentrating on 1 general subject for the week (this week it's the human body), writing, spelling, math and bible/devotion time.
and to my amazement....it's working. YEA ME! Yea God for changing me. Yea husband for looking at me like I'm crazy when i talk about the fact that maybe a schedule/goal is what i need! Yea. just Yea. It's working

Hope this is the right place to comment on our year. Here goes...
right now, we are finally doing something productive in our science, relaxing
our history and reading aloud good books, finished our math and are now doing review in our 3Rs. We've been shopping around for a science curriculum that will meet our needs for the upcoming year. Right now, I have a scope and sequence I'm following and I'm using reference/library readers to facilitate learning and notebooking. It's going better now that I dumped our science and history curriculum. That was so freeing! The kids really enjoy notebooking and reading. I'd like to be more on schedule in the months ahead, with a loose schedule on paper to follow. We found a great Bible story book that we use with our Bible readings. We plan on using Ergermeir's indefinitely. The kids LOVE it.

•Saturday, March 11, 2006 - The Blessing Of A Schedule

Posted by abidinglove
Hi Amy, I have always believed that God is a God of order and regularity - if you look to all of creation it speaks of this. Since my children were little, and they are now mid-teens, we have always followed a schedule for devotions, worship, school, chores, waking time and bedtime, mealtime etc, and it has been a blessing to all of us - we all know what the expectations are and it has made life so much easier. Our schedule has changed throught the years, but it has always been flexible when it needed to be - especially when you need to take time right then to work with a child's heart - but there is a general order and flow of things which has also given peace and security to the children. Sometimes we get frustrated when we feel we are not accomplishing enough, but what does God think is enough for today - nothing matter but the kingdom, and if we seek His kingdom first, everything else will be added. Thanks for sharing your heart. In Him, Colleen

My son is 5 years old and this year has been awesome. It started off a little rocky for the both of us but is now on a much smoother road. Not to say that we do not hit a few potholes here and there. My 5 year old has turned into an enthusiastic learning wanting to do his what we call "Kula" (school in Hawaiian) each day. I think for me the thing that I want to see changed or improved for us is creativity and more organized. I am in the beginning stages so I know that I will be constantly learning on this journey and will become more creative and organized as time goes. I also want for myself to be more educated in all of the different homeschooling methods and curriculums. Great Post by the way!!!

Joyfully in Him,

And I TRY to do the letteroftheweek http://www.letteroftheweek.com/index.html everyday with her, but I can tell I do need to plan more. But I figure as long as I take to time to talk to her about what going on around her, and have her help me with my daily chores she is learning! So I guess this year as manly been teaching her how to be a homemaker, and in my book that is the most important!!!

I began the year really structured. Lots of worksheets, workbooks, text books .. and then I realized that it was just too boring for both of us. Now we are semi-following ambleside/Charlotte Mason and it has made us BOTH a lot happier! Emily loves the nature walks, watching her mom act silly while Mozart plays, looking at different paintings and making up stories about them, and going on lots of field trips. Mom loves all the books, the reading aloud, and the trips to the library!

I think it takes time for any of us to find out what works for us. I'm glad I have taken the first step towards a good fit.

but I don't wanna...I'd rather just BUY the magnet than tell you how badly our HS is going. 1g8 does NOT want to do school. It's like pulling teeth. She's in second grade but it's such a struggle. She can barely read. I used Christian Liberty for K and A Beka for 1st and second; she's always been behind. She confuses her letters and her sounds and reading is such a struggle. She struggles in math as well. I don't know who is more frustrated - her or me. So, since you made us tell ya how it's going, that's how. Now can I have a magnet, pretty please??? lol

I'm so happy I found your blog. I am going to review your past posts and utilize the need to list. Thank you so much!!

Our school year is going very well. We are using Phonics Museum, Math U See Primer, Christian Liberty Press Science and History and I plan on starting the book Drawing with Children for art as I get a chance to start reading it. lol. My daughter is 4 1/2 and is progressing well with what we are using. I just remember to not push her and if we are having a frustrating day we do a "short day" of school. She loves to learn and I want to keep it that way.

I really need to remember to give the Lord my day everyday. I struggle in that area.

I might be to late for the magnet contest, but I just wanted to say that I will begin homeschooling in the Fall. I think a schedule is very important. It doesn't mean you have to follow it exactly, but it would have to make things way smoother for everyone!!

My older children are working very independently w/ their online classes and dh and I are pleased at their progress.

As far as our littles, I am very happy with our read aloud time! We have had many a lovely afternoon cuddling on the couch or at naptime reading and talking about our stories. I am also pleased w/ our math curriculum. Considering the effort I went to finding the right curriculum for my olders, I am pleasantly surprised that our first choice is going over well w/ my littles! Science is big fun around her, that is, when we get around to it!

The only thing getting anoverhaul this year is phonics. I'm in dire need of direction though, as now I'm very sure of what doesn't work for my dd5, yet have no idea what might work! Ideas anyone?

Things are a little slow these days. I have cut everything except for the 3r's. Life has been pretty busy. My little ones are needing training in other areas right now;) We are only covering Copywork, reading, phonics and math. I am happy with the cut backs. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty because they are not getting science, history or memorization etc.
Blessings,

•Saturday, May 27, 2006 - I Live Here Now!

:D You may have noticed that I'm camped out here now. I am so thrilled to discover your site. Over the years I have tried many many plans and theories to "getting organized" and "getting my act together". Just ask my long-suffering husband and kids!! But I am still searching! Still overwhelmed, still struggling... I feel like you have thrown me a lifeline, a way to finally get my head above water, and actually swim to a shore of joy and peace. Thank you, Amy.

I will be taking next week to PRAY and work on my schedule, to pick up the worst areas around this house (my office area, ahem), to work on the "Before Beginning" work for the CHCHC...... to begin cleaning out my HEART, and turning this house into a HOME!

I hope to blog my thoughts as I go. I hope you can visit sometime. God bless you and yours.

Hi Amy,
Just wanted to drop a note to say how much I love your blog and how much information, wisdom and encouragement I've gleaned.
I'm just starting to read through your homeschooling resources and would love a magnet like you have posted. If you still have some available let me know:)
Thanks, Jessica

and a woman seeking the Lord's Will (daily!), a wife (striving to keep the romance alive), a "Smamma" (Step- mother) of one and a homeschooling mom of seven (I was never going to have children), who starts every day over (after messing SOME thing up the day before), knowing God's grace is overflowing (just like my laundry), and so thankful He's blessed me more than I'll ever deserve.
