Only a Boy

Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - One of Those Days

Posted in This and That

Today was not the best day for homeschool at this house.  It was just one of those days.  I don't know if it was me, him, or a combination of both.  We are working on listening for sounds.  He was to match words that rhymed with either cat or fox.  He was purely guessing. And guessing badly. There was one picture left over and I wanted him to hear that it didn't match either the cat or the fox. He didn't get it. It was a key. We were supposed to think of words that rhymed with it and even when I suggested certain words, he said no. That boy has heard a great deal of Dr. Seuss books. We own quite a few too. Lots and lots of rhyming words in there but he doesn't get this.  I don't know if this concept was too hard and he wasn't ready for it, or if he wasn't understanding the directions, or if he was being difficult.  I get so discouraged when I can't tell

It was just one of those days.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.  We will have to keep plugging away.

Hi Danielle! I just wanted to tell you my really fun way of teaching my children to rhyme. It is so easy and fun that he will be rhyming in one day like an expert. I do this anytime or anywhere if we need to work on rhyming or sometimes just to be silly. Let's pretend I am doing the dishes. I say stuff like "The CUP isn't UP" and then fake laugh like a crazy woman. Than maybe "Look at this POT I am glad it is not HOT" and laugh some more. Soon someone will be trying to rhyme also. It is not REALLY laughed at unless it is a rhyming sentance. If I am feeding fish than I might say "That FISH went SWISH" Do you get it? It works because 1. It is fun....bookwork is not. 2. It relates to whatever chores we are doing at the time so the children just think it is part of our normal routine and don't know they are learning.
