Blogger Friend School Assignment #7
BOUNTIFUL BLESSINGS
Our assignment this week is to blog about your plans for Thanksgiving Day.....share your day in any creative form. Please try to include family traditions, your menus, who carves your turkey, do you save the wishbone, the list could go on and on.
I don't really have any special traditions for Thanksgiving. I think that Cameron and I will study about Thanksgiving. This seems to be the first year that he is really aware of holidays and I would like him to know the real meaning of the holiday.
He was already telling me someone was calling it Turkey Day and it struck me how wrong this is. It might seem cute and innocent but as I thought about it, I disagree wholeheartedly. Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to God. Saying "Turkey Day" makes it all about the turkey. Some people think of turkey, stuffing oneself and football when Thanksgiving is mentioned. And I think that saying "Happy Turkey Day" only adds to that. Instead of thinking about and thanking God for all He has done for you in the past year.
When did our holidays become about gluttony? Thanksgiving, stuffing oneself. Christmas, gimmie all the presents I want. Easter, candy, candy, candy. Independence Day, bigger and better fireworks and picnics. Now this is not to say that I am against turkey, presents, candy or fireworks, but when that is what the holiday is about it seems to get under my skin and makes me lean more towards anti-holiday attitude.
So, it is my goal to educate my son in the origin of holidays and the proper attitude for each of them. I'm thinking this will also help me regain my focus for each holiday. Next week's school will have a big focus on Thanksgiving.
Not really what the assignment was about but that is what came out.
Edited to add: We went to the library and I checked out about 6 books on Thanksgiving. So now I am armed and ready to go.

I agree, it is sad what's happened to holidays, but I believe if enough of us try to change the focus we can have some effect.!
Hope you had a great birthday!
