Only a Boy

• Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - Grammie

What a wonderful Christmas we had with my grandmother, Grammie.  I was able to get her picture with her three great-grandsons:  Jesse age 9, Bryan age 4, and Cameron age 5.

This was her last Christmas.  A house fire early on New Year's Day took her life.  But I am not here right now to dwell on her death, but rather her life.

She was born December 14, 1933.  There was already a big brother, Tom, in the family.  Since she was given her mother's name of Hazel Rebecca, she went by her middle name and everyone called her Becky.

Her Senior picture in 1950

While still a senior, she married my grandfather in March of 1951, right before he went off to Korea.  She was only 17.  Only 3 days after her 18th birthday she gave birth to my dad.

She was a busy mother of three as well as an army wife.  Here they are in Italy.  The baby Uncle Doug, Aunt Bessie and Dad.

She was involved in Girl Scouts since the 1950's.  And she loved to bowl.

When I came on the scene I was almost 2 years old when my mother married her son.  He later adopted me but I was her granddaughter before they even got married.  Some people say I even take after dad and her side of the family.  It's neat how God works those things out.

I was the first of three granddaughters and the first to call her Grammie.  The name was used by many.  The Girl Scouts called her Grammie.  They called her Grammie at the bowling alley she worked at for over 18 years.  Almost everyone knew her as Grammie.

Grammie and Grandpa Sarge in the early 80's

She had just celebrated her 73rd birthday and was still very active.  73 sounds so old but 73 didn't fit Grammie.  She still had not slowed down very much.  She was still bowling and working to help her stay active.  We are going to miss her dearly.

Please pray for my Uncle Doug.  He lived with Grammie and is in the hospital burn unit now being treated for second degree burns and smoke inhalation.  And there are many pieces and details to take care of with a house fire and death.

Many prayers for your family during this time of sadness. Your grammie sounds like a wonderful lady, one that I would have enjoyed meeting. I'm sure she could've kicked my tushie at bowling.

Grammie sounds like a dear and wonderful lady. Many prayers for the family, and for Uncle Doug's recovery. Y'know, I do think there's a resemblance between you and Grammie!!! I noticed it in her senior picture!

I'm sorry for your loss, but it's very Hebraic of you to focus on her Life. Many of the portions of scripture start with telling the life of someone - in order to record their death. Chai Sarah is one, it's the telling of the Life of Sarah - but it's recording her death.

Your Grammie has a wonderful testimony - and to see that wonderful vibrant picture of her with her great grandsons reminds me of the scriptures we read this morning in the end of Genesis, where Joseph lives to be old enought to know the grand children of Ephraim and Manasseh. - this is truly lifes blessing - to be one who has many descendants.

As I said last night. I'm truly sorry she was a great woman from the few interactions I had with her in Scouting. I still have the mouse she gave me for my gold award. Sorry I cant be back there to help you with things. If you see cassie tell her and her mother I send my prayers and thoughts to them as well as the rest of your family. Hugs you know where i am if you need anything. Deanna

The Mourners Kaddish

The Hebrew grieving period is long and orderly. The first set of time is concentrated on getting the body into the ground, and then a time of mourning for 7 days - in which the grieving are not left alone for 7 days straight. Then begins the period of reintergrating back into daily life, slowly.

One of the greatest things is daily saying the Mourners Kaddish - which is never to be said alone, but with a minion - a group of 10 to pray along with you. The Kaddish is a prayer of Rejoicing in God - to get the mourner to keep focused on Him, and to bring joy back to their lives.

May His great Name grow exalted and sanctified(cong. Amen) into the world that He created as He willed. May He give reign to His kingship in your lifetimes and in your days, and in the lifetimes of the entire Family of Israel, swiftly and soon. Now respond: Amen

(cong:Amen. May His great name be blessed forever and ever)

May His great Name be blessed forever and ever.
Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, mighty, upraisied, and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, Blessed is He (cong: Blessed is He) beyond any blessing and song, praise and consolation that are uttered int he world. Now respond : Amen (cong: amen)

May there be abundant peace from Heaven , and life, upon us and upon all Isreal. Now respond:Amen (cong: Amen)

He Who makes peace in His heights may He make peacu upon us and upon All Isreal Now respond :Amen (cong Amen)

I have dreamed about fire in the last few days and have been studying Daniel and those in the furnace who would not bow to the idol. They were thrown into the fire, bound, and yet they came out, unbound, and not even smelling of fire. That will be how it is with your Grammie - not bound by anything, and not smelling of fire - but rejoicing in the Lord - for He has saved her.

My heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your dear grandmother. I have a grandmother in failing health right now and I know that is somewhat different but the loss I will be facing is much the same. What a wonderful way to commemorate this special lady! I am sure she would feel honored to be mentioned in your space. Her life was a blessing, and you are a direct result of that beautiful gift. As a side note, my blog is updated now (sorry for the delay!) and I look forward to catching up on the new events more regularily. Much love and God's Blessings on your family during this difficult time.

I heard from Tamara. I watched the news online. How tragic. My prayers are for your uncle. Your Grammie was a pretty women!

Justin came home yesterday and slapped down new batteries and a real nice smoke alarm on the counter. I said what is this about. He told me about one of his customers. I said Justin - that is Michelles uncle! I have been talking about it for a week now and he never made the connection.

That is the best picture of the boys and her. So glad you got it! That is making me tear up. What a special Christmas.

Hoping your uncle pulls through and heals quickly. If you need anything let me know.
