Saturday, October 18, 2008 - Week 10
Bible:
- Moses and the Burning Bush
- Ten Plagues
- Made a chart of the 10 plagues
- First Passover
- The Exodus of Israel from Egypt
Memory:
- Matthew 16:24 ...If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
- Added Isaiah and Jeremiah to OT list
Phonics/Reading: We began working on long vowels. I think that we will need to maybe slow down a little. He's doing well but is easily getting frustrated when he can't get it, or complains of how hard it was. I will have to think on this to figure out what else we can do with this to slow it down and help build skill and confidence.
Math:
- Clocks and time (i.e. half-past, quarter-til, etc.)
- Adding 10s by adding the first number. (ex: 7+2=90 so 70+20=90)
- Multiplication tables for 2s, 5s, and 10s
- groups of 2s, 3s and 4s
- Subtracting 10s by subtracting first number (ex: 8-3=5 so 80-30=50)
Literature:
- Understood Betsy - ch 8. "Betsy Starts a Sewing Society." At first the girls are put off by the dirtiness (is that a word?) by one of the little boys at school. Then they hear of why he is dressed as he is and always so dirty. They take pity on him and decide to take it upon themselves to sew him some new clothes.
- Pilgrim's Progress - "Man in Iron Cage, Man with Dream"
History Lit: We read a few things but didn't finish our readings because of an unexpected trip on Friday.
Geography Lit:
- Tree in the Trail - ch 17 and 18. "The Past Comes to Light" in which the wagon master broke his ox yoke and decided to make a new one from the downed cottonwood. As he makes it, he finds the things that the tree had "swallowed" in the past: two stone arrow heads, a sliver of steel from a Spanish dagger, arrow points of iron, and a led ball from a French trapper. "The Ox Yoke" in which we read about how he made the yoke and kept the artifacts and even showcased them as a part of history.
Nature Lit:
- Burgess Animal Book - ch 19: common shrew, long-tailed shrew, short-tailed shrew and marsh shrew
Additional Reading:
- Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
Copy work:
- Memory verse
- Jesus! what a Help in sorrow / While the billows o'er me roll, / Even when my heart is breaking / He, my Comfort, helps my soul. ~ "Our Great Savoir"
- "And I thank the Lord! And children, we ought to be very good and please Him, for He's been so good to us." ~ Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
Spanish: is on, are on, are at, are in, is in, I am, it is, it is not, where is, where are you, where are they, yes
Artist/Composer:
- Continued listening to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no 6
- Viewed Botticelli's A Young Man being Introduced to the Liberal Arts
Nature Study: We took a very nice nature walk this week. We have really been looking at leaves and trees. Cameron is very interested in trying to identify trees, all by himself, from the book we got from the library.
